Zhao Qingyun first met Xu Lai on a spring evening. He was working overtime at the company and was asked by the old lady to go to a noodle shop to get her a chicken soup.
He remembered that he was quite tired that day. As a newcomer, he needed to familiarize himself with and handle many things at the company.
When he entered the noodle shop, he found that he wasn't the only customer. Coincidentally, they had all ordered the same soup.
There was only one serving of chicken soup left. He was about to ask for another one, but she beat him to it.
While waiting, he overheard her conversation with the owner. He could tell she was someone who knew how to enjoy life. With just a few words, he found the usually bland noodles to taste delicious.
So he ordered a bowl of egg noodles. Although he wasn't hungry, the noodles did soothe his stomach, which hadn't had dinner.
Zhao Qingyun had a gut feeling that they would never see each other again, but for some reason he wanted to get to know her. In his twenty-odd years of life, this was the first time he had this feeling. It turned out that this could be described with the word "love at first sight".
The next day, on his way to work, he caught a glimpse of her by the roadside. Although he had only seen her once before, he recognized her immediately.
Zhao Qingyun had a mixed feeling, like she was relieved, yet also felt that it was how it should be.
When he got home that evening, he wanted to see who had brought the soup that the old lady praised so highly.
He drank a bowl of it, and it did taste quite good. As he chatted with the old lady, she brought up his marriage prospects again. Zhao Qingyun found it annoying, but her image popped into his mind, so he changed the subject.
Every time I get home from get off work, there are always things delivered by my neighbors.
As evening fell, he and the old lady went out for a walk. A neighbor walked ahead of them, and just from her back, he knew she was the stranger from that night.
The two formally met, and he learned her name—Xu Lai. "So your name is Xu Lai," he thought to himself.
Zhao Qingyun could tell from her expression that she didn't remember the chance encounter that night.
When he picked up the package, he could tell she needed help, but he didn't ask. He waited for Xu Lai to ask for help, but the first thing she said was, "The neighbor's grandson."
Zhao Qingyun was stunned for a moment, then realized that on the day he officially met her, he was overjoyed to know that it was her, so this was the first time he forgot to introduce himself.
Then, to express her gratitude, she treated him to noodles. The old lady in the shop thought he was her boyfriend. Zhao Qingyun didn't say anything because he knew Xu Lai would clarify, even if he had that intention.
Knowing that her house had rats, he specially went to buy rat poison, only to be met with her polite words in return.
His room was separated from hers by two walls. One day, he saw a row of bowls on the balcony next door. He was curious about what they were and was about to find out when the owner came. He quickly withdrew one hand, and luckily she didn't notice.
He had too many durians at home, so he sent some to her. Who knew she had made durian pastries? Because he hadn't washed his hands, she fed them to him directly, and he couldn't help but blush.
Later, when she needed to grind soybeans, he could have gone to his room to read, but he wanted to stay with her a little longer, so he stayed in the yard, saying he was reading, but he barely turned a few pages.
Later, the relationship between the two families became closer, and he and she became more and more familiar with each other.
That day she had a cold and fever, and he took her to the hospital. She politely told him to go home first, but he couldn't stand her aloofness, so he left alone.
But he was still worried, so he went home, cooked some porridge, and brought it to her.
On Mother's Day, he only dared to send her a bouquet of flowers under the pretense of buying flowers for an elder.
Later, he learned that one of his employees was getting married. He originally didn't plan to get involved, but when he found out that she was the bride's cousin, he came uninvited.
Later, she became embroiled in online controversy, and he immediately stepped in to resolve the situation. He knew that Xu Lai had experienced some things in the past, but he didn't care about them at all.
When she returned from her business trip, he desperately wanted a formal title, but reason told him that he still needed Xu Lai's consent. Unexpectedly, she kissed him first.
During their time together, they inevitably had some disagreements, but he was usually the one to apologize first. There was nothing he could do; he couldn't live without her, and besides, making her happy was the most important thing.
He proposed for the first time on her birthday. He hesitated for a long time before finally deciding to take out the ring and give it to her. However, she did not agree, which was exactly what he expected.
He planned to build a home, a home with Xu Lai. He knew she wanted to have her own house, and he would fulfill that wish for her.
When he returned, he took her home to meet his parents and grandfather during the Chinese New Year.
Later, she had some unpleasantness with her family, and he realized that he was indirectly responsible. At that moment, he felt extremely regretful because he knew that, given her personality, she would definitely say "break up."
He drove back to Heng County overnight to apologize to Xu Lai. He knew that her concern wasn't about whether he helped her family, but rather about her parents' actions.
Later, she reconciled with her parents, but he knew that the hurdle in her heart would never be overcome, and there would inevitably be some troubles in the future. But he didn't mind the trouble; anything related to her was his business.
Later they got married and had a child. When he came home from get off work, he saw the two of them lying on the sofa. BabyBus was playing on TV. Yuanbao was watching TV intently, and Xu Lai was editing videos. Yuanbao would occasionally feed her a bite to eat.
Zhao Qingyun smiled, washed her hands, walked over, pinched her son's little face, and kissed Xu Lai's cheek.
With this, his life was finally complete.
