Chapter 10: The Devil's Grass is Actually Spicy and Sour!
Meanwhile, Canglan, leading several clansmen, seemed to have made a new discovery and was about to discuss it with Ningjia. But Ningjia looked panicked, glancing around frantically. "Clan leader, Hemeng is gone!"
Canglan and the others: ? ? ?
Ning Jia pointed to the riverbank, "She was catching fish here, and then a strong wind blew by, and when I looked again, she was gone."
Bai Su frowned. "Could He Meng have been blown away by the wind? What if..."
Canglan remained calm and quickly replied, "It's alright, Hemeng can swim, she's probably catching fish in the water right now."
"Clan leader!" Bai Su's face turned red, and her voice rose several decibels, "He Meng has disappeared without a trace, and you're still joking around like this!"
Ning Jia also felt that Cang Lan was too calm, so she quickly called to the others, "Let's split up and search. I'll go over there, and you guys go over there."
Canglan regained her composure and added, "The wind is strong. Hemeng might not be on the ground, but we should look for it in the trees."
Everyone agreed that it made sense, and dispersed to begin the search. Suddenly, with a whoosh, something fell from the sky and hit one of the little figures who had just jumped onto the grass. The figure fell to the ground and into the grass.
"Licorice, are you alright?!"
Everyone was startled by this sudden event and rushed over.
So that little guy with light yellow hair was named Gan Cao (Licorice). Now I'll definitely remember him.
Ning Jia suddenly had this thought, then quickly came to her senses and rushed forward to help clear away the bushes that were as tall as two small people. "Is Gan Cao alright? Should we..."
Before she could finish speaking, her eyes widened as she stared at the two tiny figures lying in the grass, “…He Meng?”
The others also looked shocked. So, what fell down just now wasn't a pine cone or bird droppings, but the missing He Meng?
"Hmm..." He Meng, who was lying on Gan Cao's body, seemed to be unharmed and soon woke up slowly.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she was surprised to meet several pairs of eyes of different sizes. "Huh, what's everyone doing here?"
Bai Su sighed and helped her up from Gan Cao's body. "None of that matters. Come here first, let the clan leader check if you have any injuries."
"Um... I think we should check on the licorice first."
Ning Jia pointed to the unlucky guy who was still lying unconscious in the grass after being hit. "Such a strong blow must have given him a concussion."
"It should be fine."
Canglan bent down to check Gancao's breathing, then took her pulse. She casually picked up a strange-looking herb, crushed it with a pebble, and fed it directly to Gancao.
"Ah, it's devil's grass!" He Meng exclaimed in horror. "Chieftain, I don't need to eat this, do I?"
Canglan magically produced another similar herb, saying, "If you feel dizzy, you'd better eat some."
"No, no, no, no," He Meng hurriedly refused, waving her hand so fast it was almost a blur.
Ning Jia hadn't yet remembered to ask what this devil's grass was, or why He Meng was avoiding it so much. The unconscious Gan Cao coughed violently and opened his eyes.
"Licorice, are you alright? Here, have some water first."
Bai Su had already gone to the river to fetch some water. Now, holding the leaves, she let the licorice spit out the grass residue in its mouth, and then took a sip of water to rinse its mouth.
Gan Cao felt her mouth was numb, and with Bai Su's help, she kept drinking water. "Cough cough, how come there's... cough cough, devil grass here?"
“Yeah, isn’t Devil’s Grass hard to find?” another little man named Quartz asked curiously.
Canglan smiled but said nothing, and then magically pulled out a large handful of devil grass from the straw bag on her body.
Wow! The little people couldn't help but gasp. This was the first time in their lives they had ever seen so much devil grass.
"Besides these, there are many more here." Cang Lan chuckled, seemingly quite satisfied with everyone's reaction, and calmly continued to announce, unsurprisingly drawing shocked glances from the crowd once again.
After watching for a while, Ning Jia finally couldn't help but interject, "Is this devil's grass really that powerful?"
“Of course,” He Meng seemed completely fine, and started chattering away to explain to Ning Jia, “This herb is amazing. Even if someone is unconscious, just chewing it will wake them up…”
"Is it that amazing?"
Ning Jia was somewhat skeptical, but the fact that Gan Cao had indeed woken up immediately after eating the substance left her no choice but to believe it.
"Isn't this similar to mint?" Ning Jia vaguely thought of something and suddenly asked Cang Lan, "Chieftain, can I try some of this herb?"
Upon hearing this, everyone else frantically waved their hands at her: "Oh my god, how could anyone want to try devil's grass?"
Canglan could understand Ningjia's curiosity, but she also warned her beforehand, "The taste of this herb is really hard to swallow, so it's best to only have a small taste."
As he spoke, he handed Ning Jia a green grass that grew wildly and unruly.
Seeing the little people staring at her nervously, Ning Jia swallowed hard, threw the devil grass into her mouth, and chewed it a few times.
"Huh, it doesn't smell like anything. You guys aren't lying to me, are you?"
She breathed a sigh of relief, licked the herbs in her mouth with the tip of her tongue, and was about to chew them again when suddenly her mind went blank. A cool sensation that seemed to burst through the top of her head assaulted her senses, making her nose sting and tears immediately streamed down her face.
It was as if a lightning bolt had struck Ning Jia's mind. She was stunned for a moment, her mind blank, tears streaming down her face, her mouth numb and unable to speak.
It took her a while to come to her senses, her eyes filled with mixed emotions as she looked at the large bunch of devil's grass in Canglan's hand:
...This thing is actually sour and spicy!!
You should have said so earlier! She absolutely cannot eat spicy food...
"I didn't expect this devil's grass to be so potent, comparable to a hundred times more effective mentholatum," Ning Jia said slowly after a while.
He Meng, who was darting in and out of the grass, stopped and asked, "What is mentholatum?"
Ning Jia's mind was still reeling from the shock, and she didn't really want to talk. She gave a brief explanation and then turned to look at the clear blue sky and water not far away.
At this moment, her mind was clearer than ever before, all her chaotic thoughts seemed to have been swept away, leaving only the beautiful scenery and weather before her.
The sky is so blue, the wind is so warm, the grass is so green, and it's so wonderful to be alive like this.
Her senses suddenly became sharper than ever before, and she could see even the veins of the grass blades swaying in the wind and the colors of the feathers of the birds that flew by.
"Lord Ning Jia, are you alright?"
Bai Su looked up at Ning Jia's face with some concern, feeling that something was wrong.
"It's nothing." Ning Jia silently gazed at the scenery for a while, then suddenly turned and asked, "Chief Canglan, will this herb have any side effects?"
Canglan thought for a moment, "Our clan has been using this herb for hundreds of years since it was discovered, and no one has suffered any serious harm."
"But this herb is indeed potent, so it's best to avoid consuming it unless absolutely necessary."
Ning Jia nodded, "I understand."
She picked up her phone and used image recognition to look up information about the herb. It was indeed a non-toxic and harmless herb, but it grew in secluded places and was difficult to harvest. She wondered how the little people managed to gather it.
Ning Jia savored the cool taste in her mouth and suddenly asked, "Chief Canglan, didn't you just say there are still many Devil Grasses here?"
She chuckled, her eyes shining, "Actually, I have an idea about this devil's grass..."
