Chapter 108: Gambling on Dignity
They are twins, but they live two completely different lives.
"My mother gave him all her love," Ji Bingqian said, picking up his wine glass but not drinking. He just stroked the cold glass wall with his fingertips. "She paved all the way for him, from which elementary school to attend, to what major to study in college, and who to marry in the future."
He spoke the last few words softly and slowly.
Xu Yueqing's fingers holding the water cup tightened subconsciously.
"When Xiaochen was eighteen, he went hiking with me and met a girl."
Ji Bingqian's voice became a little bitter at this moment, like the glass of whiskey in his hand, which finally revealed its spicy aftertaste.
"They fell in love very quickly. But my mother didn't like that girl."
Xu Yueqing could guess what would happen next.
She had heard and seen such secrets of wealthy families. Being unsuitable was a sin.
"My mother tried to persuade me at first, then she forced me, and later she just tried to stop me." Ji Bingqian laughed at himself. "This was the first time Xiaochen slammed the table at home for an outsider. He said he wanted to make his own decisions about his life."
"Then he broke off relations with his family."
"He moved out of the house and stopped spending any of the family's money. He spent every day at the modified car shop, making money by competing with others, and drinking day and night."
Xu Yueqing looked at him.
Under the light, Ji Bingqian's profile was tense, and in his deep eyes, there was a huge sadness that she couldn't understand but could feel.
The sunny boy in the photo and the alcoholic, break-up and rebellious young man described by Ji Bingqian seemed to be two different people.
But she knew it was the same person.
He is a person who has been forced to change beyond recognition by that heavy, suffocating love.
Ji Bingqian's voice sank to the bottom.
"The last time I saw him was at the starting point of an underground rally."
"That was a trap set by my mother. She said that as long as Xiaochen could win the national champion she had invited with great expense in that competition, she would no longer care about his life and would agree to let that girl in."
Xu Yueqing's heart suddenly tightened.
She could also imagine the light that would rekindle in Xiao Chen's eyes when he heard this condition.
It was a game where dignity, love and future were at stake.
It is his only hope to break out of the cage.
Ji Bingqian turned his head, and for the first time, his red eyes looked straight at Xu Yueqing.
"He was particularly happy that day. He held my hand and smiled at me with confidence and flamboyance, just like in the photo."
"He patted me on the shoulder and said the last words."
Xu Yueqing held her breath. She looked at Ji Bingqian's slightly trembling lips, as if she herself was standing at the starting point of the noisy race.
All I could hear was Ji Bingqian repeating that sentence in a broken voice that was almost like a whisper.
"He said, wait for me, Aqian!"
"'Wait for me to return triumphantly, and take her back to the old house to have a reunion dinner together!'"
That confident and assertive promise still echoed in the silent living room, like a stone thrown into stagnant water, the aftermath lingered for a long time.
But the next second, the ripples were completely shattered.
Ji Bingqian gripped the wine glass with such force that his knuckles turned white. The glass seemed like it would break in his hand at any moment, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged hideously.
"But when I saw him again." His voice sounded like it was pulled out of an ice cellar, and every word hit Xu Yueqing's heart. "He didn't even have a complete body."
