Chapter 60

Chapter 60

He went to see her; amidst the noise, her eyelashes trembled slightly.

The curve of his lips deepened, but his eyes held a hint of melancholy.

In the instant she was considering her response, Chen Zhoujing's attitude had already changed: "Let's not think about that now, let's go, let's go, let me show you around."

He gestured with his chin slightly to the side: "Okay?"

Jian nodded and followed Chen Zhoujing.

The two figures stood out and were very eye-catching in the crowd.

Behind them, under the shade of a tree at a fork in the road, Jian Qingyao bit into the candy in his mouth, making a crisp sound.

His face was cold, and he broke the bamboo skewer in his hand.

Hearing the noise, Yang Shao turned to look at him.

Their gaze lingered on his hand, then followed his eyes to two figures not far away.

He didn't speak, his chest felt heavy.

Only when the bamboo skewer in Jian Qingyao's hand was about to pierce his flesh did he slowly raise his hand and gently grasp it: "Let go."

Jian Qingyao turned his dark eyes around.

The warmth of his hands only fueled my irritation: "Get out."

Yang Shao was used to his bad temper and didn't say anything more, but he didn't stop what he was doing.

He used force to pry his hand open and finally took the bamboo skewer away.

Jian Qingyao's brow furrowed in anger: "Who gave you permission to touch me!"

Yang Shao spoke up, his tone calm: "Don't take your anger out on me."

“Ni Xiaoman is not allowed either.”

Jian Qingyao's breath hitched. She stared into his deep eyes for a long time before turning away.

Without saying a word, Yang Shao got up and walked to the trash can next door, throwing away the bamboo skewers.

After he sat down, Jian Qingyao said calmly, "I can't explain Ni Xiaoman's matter to you."

"My attitude just now was wrong, and I apologize to you."

Yang Shaoxin's heart skipped a beat, and he awkwardly lowered his head: "It's nothing."

Seeing that he didn't seem angry, Jian Qingyao stood up and searched for the two figures that had already walked away: "They've gone, they've gone back."

Yang Shao opened his eyes slightly: "Brother...we just arrived."

He leaned back in his chair, looking impatient.

Jian Qingyao took a breath: "Then you follow!"

"Unpredictable," Yang Shao murmured to himself, then followed in his footsteps.

Jian Qingyao, with his hands in his pockets and acting like a cocky old man, walked towards the two figures in front of him.

Yang Shao guessed that he was following those two people, but judging from Jian Qingyao's stalking manner, he seemed eager for others to recognize him.

He sighed, and as the two figures turned around, he grabbed his arm and pulled them aside.

"What are you doing?" Jian Qingyao pulled his hand back.

Yang Shao curled his lip: "How can you blatantly stalk someone like that?"

Jian Qingyao was speechless, then simply said "oh," and became much more careful with his movements.

His gaze fell back on the two people, and he felt very annoyed. He had originally thought that Jian Sheng would not pay attention to such people.

As a result, the two of them went on a romantic date.

Little did she know, Chen Zhoujing was a ticking time bomb. Jian Qingyao crossed her arms, her chest pounding with increasing agitation.

"What are you doing with that young couple?" Yang Shao frowned, squinting at the tall figure's back. "And who is that?"

After saying that, she opened her eyes wide and looked at Jian Qingyao, wanting a response.

Jian Qingyao twitched the corner of his mouth: "Chen Zhoujing."

Yang Shao exclaimed, "Who is Chen Zhoujing?"

Jian Qingyao suddenly realized that this person was oblivious to what was going on around him, so while he was keeping a straight face, she spoke up to stop a storm from brewing.

"My sister's suitor."

"Oh." Yang Shao crossed his arms and quietly observed in that direction.

Apart from Chen Zhoujing, who kept opening his mouth and saying something, his sister hardly said a word.

Is this a suitor? Or is this a chatterbox?

"What are you thinking about again?" Jian Qingyao suddenly asked.

Yang Shao was taken aback: "No."

Jian Qingyao pursed his lips into a straight line, and after a long while, he clicked his tongue and walked towards Jian Sheng's direction.

"Hey, you're not going to follow them, are you?" Yang Shao quickly walked to his side.

Jian Qingyao didn't respond, and continued to lift her foot towards the backs of the people who were chatting happily.

At this moment, Chen Zhoujing was circling around Jian Sheng, softening his tone and coaxing her to play the games.

Jian Sheng noticed his movements, and after walking a few steps, she stopped and stood still, quietly watching him.

Chen Zhoujing stopped moving as she spoke: "Why aren't you moving?"

Jian sighed, wondering where he got the energy from, and couldn't help but say, "Stop hovering around me all the time."

Chen Zhoujing didn't say anything, but stepped forward and turned to be level with her.

Jian Sheng glanced at him sideways, and after he blinked a few times in the same manner, she gave in: "I'll go play with you, okay?"

Chen Zhou exclaimed in surprise, then asked with delight, "Really?"

“Really.” Jian nodded.

He had already participated in quite a few activities, but he didn't seem to feel tired at all.

Jian Sheng knew that his emotions changed very quickly, but the more he did so, the stranger it seemed to her.

All we can do is try to go along with it.

But she always felt that a faint cloud was floating on the surface, waiting for the answer to become clearer.

What comes after clarity... she dared not think about it.

"What do you want to play?" She asked without further thought.

Chen Zhoujing said, "We just threw darts, rode bumper cars, and rode the mini-train... Want to try something more exciting?"

He raised an eyebrow.

“Okay,” she replied.

"Let's go to the haunted house. He Shang said we'd meet there." He typed a few words on his phone. "Let's go as a group later, otherwise we'll be scared."

Jian Sheng swallowed hard; she was scared regardless of how many people were around.

The term "haunted house" is so novel.

"Are you afraid of ghosts?" The screen went dark, and he put the phone back.

Jian Sheng clenched his hands in his pockets a few times: "...Don't be afraid."

"Oh." Chen Zhou smiled in surprise. "I'm scared."

He leaned closer to look at her evasive eyes.

Jian Sheng turned her head away and gave him a push: "Oh."

"Oh?" Chen Zhou raised his hand to his chest in surprise. "Oh again?"

He murmured, "Don't they say online that if you boldly express your fears, you'll receive corresponding care...?"

Jian Sheng frowned, watching him mutter to himself for a long time, then pursed her lips and whispered, "Then... I'll protect you?"

Chen Zhou's rambling voice abruptly stopped, his ear tips turning bright red: "You...you."

"Okay..." He heard what he wanted to hear, but felt ashamed.

I touched the back of my neck, feeling embarrassed.

Jian Sheng appeared calm on the surface, but his heart was in turmoil, and he found it increasingly difficult to move forward as he approached the door.

There weren't many people at the entrance of the haunted house, but the screams coming from inside the black cloth were truly terrifying.

Jian Sheng took a step back, his palms sweating in his stuffy pocket.

Before long, two more people came up from behind.

"Do you even understand what I mean?" He Shang asked urgently. "And that eraser from last time, that's not what I meant at all. Why are you still bringing it up?"

Jian turned around, his eyes wide with surprise.

He Shang and Xu Xiaxia went out alone at some point, and they were still bickering as usual.

However, He Shang was more excited than Xu Xiaxia; he was talking while gesturing with his hands.

Xu Xiaxia crossed her arms and retorted impatiently.

As she got closer, she clung to him like a lifeline: "Waaah, Jian Sheng."

Xu Xiaxia walked over to Jian Sheng, grabbed her arm, and glared at He Shang: "He's so annoying!"

He Shang was speechless. He stepped forward and stood next to Chen Zhoujing, putting his right arm around his shoulder, and complained, "She's a stingy person. She even told me about the eraser!"

Chen Zhou asked in a calm tone, "When did you become so childish?"

"?" He Shang was taken aback. "Are you describing yourself as childish?"

"Who's the naive one?" he retorted.

Chen Zhoujing stood next to Jian Sheng, forcing He Shang's arm to fall. He gritted his teeth and said, "Chen Zhoujing, you hypocrite!"

He didn't mind the new nickname, and instead smiled with a forced smile.

He looks like he's asking for trouble.

"What are you arguing about?" Jian Sheng nudged his arm as it brushed against hers.

Chen Zhou lowered his head in surprise: "We weren't arguing, we were just playing around."

After speaking, he looked up and coughed unintentionally.

"As expected, Chen is a hypocrite!" He Shang said with a gloomy face.

"You have the nerve to talk about others like that? You shameless monkey, you scoundrel!" Xu Xiaxia rolled her eyes at him.

He Shang got excited and walked over to her.

Seeing that another argument was about to break out, Chen Zhoujing pulled Jian Sheng aside and said to the two who were poised to fight, "That's enough, you two."

Meanwhile, the others split into two groups and came from opposite directions.

"Damn, that was awesome! I tried all the rides!" Xu Yanghe took off his glasses and wiped the fogged-up mirror with his thin sweatshirt from under his open cotton coat.

He saw Chen Zhoujing and gestured with his chin: "You're back."

Chen Zhou nodded in surprise: "Okay, I won't ask for leave."

"I can't sleep in history class anymore." Xu Yanghe pretended to be unhappy, but a smile appeared on her lips.

The group chatted for a few minutes, avoiding any heavy topics.

However, before entering the haunted house, almost everyone who passed by whispered a word of condolence in his ear.

Jian Sheng followed behind him, glancing up at his melancholy hair.

The frustration in his eyes disappeared when he turned around.

"It's almost our turn," Chen Zhou said in surprise.

Jian Sheng hummed in agreement and took a small step toward him.

The six people entered in batches, with Jian Sheng and Chen Zhoujing in the last group.

The black curtain at the door was drawn tight, and screams came one after another from inside.

Jian Sheng's heart was pounding, but now that they were at the door, it wasn't a good time to turn back.

A piercing scream drilled into her ears, her brow furrowed, and fine beads of sweat appeared on her forehead.

"Next group, line up." A staff member wearing a red vest raised his hand.

The railing was pulled open, and He Shang was at the front; he went in first.

Before long, Jian Sheng heard his endless screams.

She took a step back and grabbed Chen Zhoujing's sleeve.

“I…” Jian shook her head.

Chen Zhoujing hummed in surprise: "What's wrong?"

He lowered his hand, which had just pulled back the curtain: "Scared?"

"Are you coming in or not? What are you two doing?" Xu Xiu walked up and lifted the curtain again. "We'll go in first."

He looked up at Gu Zhenyi, who patted Chen Zhoujing on the shoulder and followed Xu Xiu inside.

Chen Zhoujing glanced at the tourists behind him and apologized to the staff, "Let them go first."

After he finished speaking, he gently pulled Jian Sheng's arm through his down jacket and was about to walk out against the flow of people in line.

Jian Sheng didn't move, but struggled for a moment: "Go...go in."

She pulled her hand back, grabbed his sleeve instead, and walked towards the curtain, her voice trembling slightly: "You should protect me."

Once inside, Jian Sheng stood at the doorway, her vision blocked by darkness. After taking two steps, a bluish-green light flashed before her eyes. She suddenly turned around, grabbed Chen Zhoujing's clothes with both hands, and turned her back to the bluish-green shadow.

Chen Zhou was startled. He looked up and saw the light and shadow flash a few times and then disappear. He chuckled softly.

"Who was it that just said they would protect me?" he asked deliberately.

Jian Sheng exclaimed softly, her tone neither too loud nor too soft, revealing neither annoyance nor a hint of anxiety: "I told you later, you'd protect me!"

Her gentle voice, mixed with screams and special effects, entered his ears without causing discomfort. His heart warmed inexplicably: "Okay, okay, okay, I'll protect you."

"Then I'll definitely protect you. Let's go, let's charge into battle!"

"Naive!" Jian Sheng said emphatically.

When people are in a frightened environment, they are prone to panic and their tone of voice may unconsciously carry a hint of temper.

Chen Zhou was not annoyed. Instead, he found her behavior refreshing, quite different from her usual aloof and serious demeanor, and much more vibrant.

He couldn't help it, and his shoulders shook with laughter.

Jian Sheng felt his trembling: "What are you doing?"

"Are you scared too?" she asked in a short voice, glancing around but her vision was completely dark.

For her, Chen Zhoujing is all that matters now.

"Should we go outside?" she said through gritted teeth. "She just said she wasn't afraid, but now she's not saying anything."

Jian Sheng unconsciously clenched her hands on his clothes, as if afraid he would disappear.

Chen Zhoujing finally managed to calm himself down: "We can't get out now."

Jian Sheng's voice rose: "Then what do we do?"

I don't think you're up to the task either!

"?" Chen Zhou frowned in surprise. "I can't do it either?"

"You underestimate me. I'm not easily intimidated."

“Come on!” He grabbed her wrist and walked ahead.

Jian Sheng was stunned for a few seconds when a roar suddenly came from the side, which startled her so much that she moved closer to him.

Chen Zhoujing pulled her to the right.

"That was terrifying." Jian Sheng's hoarse voice crackled as he spoke, "I wish I hadn't come."

"Unfortunately, there's no such thing as having regrets if you knew beforehand..."

"Why is it so dark?" She stepped on something, making a crunching sound, and exclaimed, jumping to the side.

While jumping, he continued, "Didn't you pay the electricity bill?"

"We're doomed..."

"Life is full of darkness..."

"Chen Zhoujing, don't let go..."

"Chen Zhoujing, why aren't you saying anything?"

"Was it a person or a ghost that pulled me?"

She murmured several times.

He didn't speak, but tightened his grip on her wrist, his eyebrows arching as he listened to her whisper.

It seemed that at this moment, he had rediscovered the nature of her that was hidden by numbness.

Jian Sheng didn't hear his voice and her heart was pounding in her throat: "Don't these ghosts need to rest?"

“They must be afraid of me too.” Her voice was already somewhat erratic. “If something happens to me, they’ll go in too.”

...........

After a few seconds of silence, she suddenly became serious and said, "Chen Zhoujing, I'm scared."

“I’ve always been here,” Chen Zhou replied in surprise.

After that one sentence, Jian Sheng's heart calmed down.

Chen Zhoujing slowed down, realizing he had been lost in thought listening to her for too long. Coming back to his senses, he tried to keep her in his sight and occasionally offered words of comfort.

They escorted her out. Fortunately, the haunted house wasn't too scary. Apart from the sudden bursts of ghostly screams, the most frightening thing was the screams of the people who were scouting ahead.

He didn't let go until they were out of the crowd.

Chen Zhoujing bent down, placed his hands on his knees, and looked at her downcast eyes: "You cried?"

He denied it in a low voice, clenched his hands, raised his eyes, and his eyes showed a hint of lingering satisfaction.

He raised an eyebrow, his voice clear and crisp: "Exciting, isn't it?"

"Stimulate!"

Hearing his gentle voice, Jian Sheng's surprise and delight deepened.
