Chapter 49: Testimonies of Returned Missionaries

Chapter 49: Testimonies of Returned Missionaries

Darien squatted on the roof.

Squatting with him were Sewell and Hawkins.

As an academic, Hawkins actually didn't want to participate in this action.

But he also had his own concerns. For example, if a monster rushed into the door uncontrollably...it would be better to go to an open area outside. At least the probability of injuring himself by throwing various magic tools was much smaller.

Darian looked down from above and saw that the skinless monster was intact. Its muscles and bones had regenerated, and it was not beaten into a puddle of mud as Walton described.

Does the preacher have healing powers? He seems to be unkillable.

"Are you here for your hide?" Darien suddenly said.

The skinless monster below suddenly looked up.

"Can you speak? Answer me, are you here for your hide?" said Darien.

"Hehe." The monster uttered two single sounds from its throat.

He seemed unable to speak, so after making those two noises, he stepped back to within sight of the roof, looked at Darien and the others, and nodded.

"I can give you the skin back, but you have to tell me what happened in this village," said Darien.

The monster below nodded quietly.

Sewell and Hawkins are ready. If something goes wrong, they will blow up the monsters below immediately.

Hawkins, in particular, was so nervous that he distributed his jingling amulets to several of them, so that he could have time to react even if he encountered a sudden attack.

Darien threw the wooden box down.

The monster eagerly cut open the wooden box, shook out the human skin inside, and put the skin back on very quickly.

After putting on the skin, he turned into a young man, raised his head again and said to them, "We can go inside and talk."

Darien said, "Can you come in?"

The missionary nodded. "Of course."

Darien said, "Push the door and go in yourself. It will take some time for us to get down from upstairs."

The missionary walked to the eaves and heard a creaking sound, which was the sound of the door being pushed open. He walked into the house.

"Are we really going down?" Hawkins whispered to Darien.

"Go down, I want to hear what he says. And since he can enter the house, he should be considered a human being now." Darien said.

"If there's a problem, we can control him," Sewell said.

After all, it was three against one. Even the missionary could be beaten to death by the villagers who rushed over. They should be able to handle it.

Sewell jumped down from the roof first, followed by Darien and finally Hawkins, and they entered the house in a tense atmosphere.

Of course, I didn't forget to lock the door.

The missionary now looked like a normal person, almost too normal.

"I can tell you anything you want to hear," he told them.

"First question, what are you and why can you shed your own skin without dying?" Darien asked.

"I used to be a human being, but I was cursed. I could never die. Every night I had to shed my skin and fill it with dried herbs to keep it from rotting," said the missionary.

"I don't see any curse on you." Darien asked.

"This curse has been going on for too long, and we have merged together. I used to think it was a curse, but now I think it is a gift. I can use the long life given by the curse to do penance..." the missionary murmured.

"Please wait, this has nothing to do with the cursed village. Do you know what exactly happened here?" said Darien.

"The vitality of the villagers in this village is being slowly drained away," the missionary said.

“Those two children whose flesh and blood were removed in the beginning, to whom was this energy returned?” Darien frowned.

"There is only one god worshipped in this village." Sewell said softly.

"Hawkins! Take that stone down and smash it!" Darien said suddenly.

"Well, if we smash it, monsters will come in from outside, right?" Although Hawkins said this, he still ran over quickly to pull the stone down, took out a small metal stick and smashed the stone into pieces.

"Just stand there and guard the door. If you hear any noise, shout immediately," said Darien.

"Do I look like I can hold my own?" Hawkins replied with a gloomy face.

"I don't know to whom that power was returned." The missionary shook his head. "But this village has reached the end of its road. The pollution of the well is a sign of awakening. I suppressed this awakening. I originally wanted to find something to drain the vitality of this village, but I couldn't do it."

"Do you know the god worshipped by the villagers in this village? His name is Ferros," said Darien.

"I don't know. I've never heard of a god with such a name." The missionary shook his head. He continued, "Besides me, this village is roamed by a group of empty corpses every night. They are controlled to reap lives."

As soon as he finished speaking, Hawkins reminded them, "There are footsteps coming this way."

"Come back, this house can't hold up. You, go to another room, we are not friends, so stay away from us." Darien said.

"I understand." The missionary nodded and walked into a room and locked himself in.

"What do we do now?" Hawkins asked.

"What are you doing?" Darien didn't answer, but looked at Sevier first.

Sewell was clearing away the soup pots and spoons on the stove.

"Mrs. Fitch said they had to be brought back in one piece," he said.

"Is this the time to worry about this?" Hawkins raised his voice.

"You're right, clean it up quickly." Darien nodded in agreement.

The humanoid monster outside began to bang on the door.

"Open the door! Open the door! It's dark outside, let us in!"

"No," Darien said.

More footsteps were heard outside, and more monsters surrounded the small wooden bungalow. Teeth-grinding crackling sounds came from the walls in every direction.

"It seems like they can't get it open. Should we just wait here?" Hawkins was scared at first, but after listening to these voices, he felt dizzy.

"Hmm..." Darien was silent for a moment, "So weak? Let's just blow the door open."

The monster outside was silent for a moment, and then began to bang on the door violently, as if expressing its anger at his words.

"Just stand still and let me try a new potion," said Hawkins.

"I suspect you will blow us all up. What kind of potion is this?" Darien silently took two steps back.

"This is strong acid, very corrosive. But don't worry, we all have amulets on us. If it falls on us, it will bounce off." Hawkins said as he smashed a bottle at the door.

The glass bottle suddenly exploded on the ground, and the dark yellow acidic liquid directly corroded the entire wall including the door, and some of the talking monsters outside were also affected.

"What ingredients are you made of..." Darien was almost fainted by the fumes.

This bottle of strong acid smells very bad, and its effect can be said to be harmful to others and not beneficial to oneself.

"I think this tastes okay! Let's go, let's find a place to run!" Hawkins changed his hand to the frost potion and threw it at the white smoke coming out of the ground.

The monsters outside did not miss this opportunity and surrounded them.

Darien squinted his eyes and felt even more nauseous.

The monsters outside were not in human form. They were just a pile of skeletons covered with rotten flesh. It seemed that only their vocal cords were intact, which could trick others into opening the door.

"Let's go." Darien covered his mouth and nose and threw the powerful frost potion outside with great disgust.

The rapidly freezing frost turned into shackles, temporarily freezing the rotten skeletons pouring in from outside in place. They could pass by these crackling skeletons unimpeded.

Until Darien and the others were all outside the house.

"Chuck, come out too, we are going to burn this house down." Darien said to the missionary in the house.

"Okay, thank you for reminding me." The missionary walked out of the house.

"You're welcome. You've only gotten rid of suspicion temporarily. We'll still keep a close eye on you," said Darien.

"That's okay, it's what we should do," said the missionary.

Darien took out the familiar Molotov cocktail and threw it one by one at the feet of the rotten skeletons. The fire element immediately melted the ice. As soon as the skeletons resumed their movements, they were engulfed by the blazing flames and turned into ashes on the ground in a few breaths.

"Sevier, tie him up. We need your cooperation. We won't hurt you, but the premise is that you really haven't done anything to this village." Darien threw a piece of cowhide rope to Sevier.

"Please, my conscience is clear." The missionary held out his hands.

"You do look like a normal human being at this moment. It seems that this curse has not given you any power except for a long life." Darien looked at the missionary.

"You could say that. My real strength lies in my mind, and I've learned a lot in this long life." The missionary nodded at him.

"Okay, enough nonsense, let's go find the village chief Walton. I want to see how they pray to their god, Ferros. I think we need to meet him." Darien said.

The skeletons that crawled out of the cemetery were burned, and the threat to the village was temporarily lifted.

However, Darien was not very confident that he could get Walton to open the door. After all, after nightfall, everyone in the village knew that they needed to keep their doors closed. If necessary, he would directly break down Walton's door.

They brought the missionaries to Walton's doorstep.

Knocked on the door very politely.

Darien said, "We returned the skins to the missionary and burned the bodies of those who died. The village is now safe for the time being. But there is a problem. The missionary said that it wasn't him who cursed the village, but that the village was already eroded. So I hope you can open the door and let us in to see for ourselves how you would pray to your gods."

Naturally, there was no echo from inside the door.

Who knows if those outside are human or cunning monsters?

Darien understood Walton's concerns, but unfortunately, he didn't want to wait until the next morning. His time was also valuable.

If possible, let's end this tonight.
