Shen Yuxiu and Song Ning stayed in front of the tombstone for more than half an hour. When they came down, Shen Yuxiu's shoulders were already mostly wet. Song Ning took him to the cemetery management office and bought a towel from the administrator.
The administrator's name is Jiang Wen. When Song Ning first came here, she had just graduated and is now in her thirties.
Jiang Wen handed Song Ning hot water and a towel: "Drink some hot water."
"Thank you, Sister Wen." Song Ning took the towel and handed it to Shen Yuxiu.
Jiang Wen sat back down at his desk: "Don't be shy. I guessed you'd be coming again this year. It's just raining so hard, why didn't you bring an umbrella? If you don't have one, you can borrow one from me."
Song Ning recalled that she had asked Shen Yuxiu to help her earlier, and glanced at Shen Yuxiu: "I didn't expect the rain to be so heavy."
Shen Yuxiu helped her wipe the wet parts of her body: "The weather hasn't been cold these past two days, so it's okay to get a little rained on."
Jiang Wen looked at the man, who was mostly soaked, and saw that he had helped Song Ning dry off first. She smiled and said, "When I saw you two separate before, I thought you had a fight. Now it seems I was overthinking it."
Jiang Wen and Song Ning were fairly familiar with each other, and Jiang Wen noticed the young girl from the beginning.
She comes every year on this day, for several years in a row, always with a boy by her side, but they have never spoken to each other.
It wasn't until 7 or 8 years ago, when Jiang Wen was on night patrol, that she found Song Ning, who was over 10 years old, sleeping on the tombstone, which startled her.
Jiang Wen woke Song Ning up and asked her questions, but she didn't answer any of them, only saying that she would go back when it was light.
Jiang Wen found it amusing; they were on a mountain, where would they find a car to take her back?
Jiang Wen led Song Ning to his office and said that her family would come to pick her up. She said she didn't want to trouble her uncles and aunts and asked if she could stay overnight.
Jiang Wen was still young at the time and found the little girl mature and interesting, so he chatted with her for a few minutes. However, in the end, he sent someone to pick her up and take her home.
Song Ning only comes once or twice a year. They chat occasionally, but they're not close.
Four years ago, Jiang Wen was going through a divorce with her ex-husband and often had injuries on her body.
When Song Ning arrived, she saw him, and he was indifferent and didn't seem to care.
But Jiang Wen knew that Song Ning had visited the cemetery several times later, specifically to see her.
Although they didn't have much contact, she discovered that Song Ning was the kind of girl who would be nice to whoever was nice to her.
After successfully divorcing her ex-husband, Song Ning returned to her old ways, visiting only once or twice a year, but this time with one less person by her side.
It wasn't that he came very often, but that man always came very early in the morning and didn't leave until Song Ning left.
Jiang Wen originally wanted to ask Song Ning if they had quarreled, but she felt that Song Ning hadn't asked her about her ex-husband back then because she respected her, and she shouldn't interfere in their affairs, so she didn't bring it up.
Seeing them arrive together today, I couldn't resist.
"Separately?" Song Ning understood the implication and looked at Shen Yuxiu. "When have you ever come here by yourself?"
Shen Yuxiu turned his head and wiped his shoulders with a towel: "Just a while ago."
"Shen Yuxiu, when was the recent period of time?" Song Ning asked.
Shen Yuxiu pinched Song Ning's smiling face as she leaned closer: "Stop fooling around, you should know that."
Song Ning slapped his hand away, still smiling, "How would I know if you don't tell me?"
When Jiang Wen looked at the two of them, one was more indulgent than helpless, and the other was more happy than teasing, he suddenly had the idea to look for them again.
The two sat for a while, then Shen Yuxiu went out to answer a phone call. When he came back, he said he had something to do and left with Song Ning.
Song Ning noticed something was wrong with him and asked, "What happened?"
Shen Yuxiu started the car and instructed, "Fasten your seatbelts. No matter what happens, don't get out of the car, understand?"
Song Ning fastened her seatbelt: "If you're in danger, I can't sit in the car. Don't expect me to watch you get hurt."
Shen Yuxiu glanced at Song Ning and then remained silent.
Not long after the car left the cemetery, Song Ning noticed that there was another car following behind.
The small white six-seater car was a bit difficult to catch up with, but they couldn't shake it off.
The stalemate lasted for 5 or 6 minutes before Shen Yuxiu slammed on the brakes.
A thick, wild tree stood across the road, blocking their way.
Shen Yuxiu unbuckled his seatbelt: "The police have already been called. You stay in the car and wait for the police. Don't get out."
"You haven't even learned self-defense, so why should I stay in the car? When it comes to fighting, I have way more experience than you!" Song Ning roared.
She now understood what Shen Yuxiu meant when he said she would choose the right time.
Song Ning turned around and saw that the number of people getting off the car behind them far exceeded the number of seats; there were probably eight or nine people.
They were holding baseball bats and knives. Song Ning unbuckled his seatbelt, his face showing absolutely no room for negotiation.
This was the first time Shen Yuxiu had ever hated her stubbornness so much. He bit his cheek and said, "Hold them off for seven minutes, make sure they don't get hurt."
"Mind your own business." Song Ning suddenly laughed.
She doesn't need his constant protection.
The people outside walked to the front of the car. They first pulled on the car door, found it was locked, and then banged on the windshield with a stick.
The windshield is cracked in a spiderweb pattern.
Shen Yuxiu and Song Ning exchanged a glance, then simultaneously opened the car door and kicked it out.
One of the people standing by the door didn't expect the other person to dare get out of the car. He was kicked in a sore spot and clutched the spot with a stick.
The others raised their knives and clubs and smashed them down.
Song Ning had no time to worry about Shen Yuxiu's situation. He crouched down, swept his leg across the fallen man's body, stepped over him, and snatched the baseball bat from his hand. He then raised it above his head to block the falling machete.
The force of the machete was so great that it made her hand go numb, and she almost lost her grip on the baseball bat.
Rainwater soaked her eyes, obscuring part of her vision. She couldn't help but curse inwardly, "These people really know how to pick their days."
She swung the machete from her head, stood up, and was immediately grabbed by someone who pulled her forward.
"Stop wasting time, do you really want to go 2 against 9?" Shen Yuxiu shouted.
Song Ning jumped over the tree trunk blocking her way: "You just told me to wait in the car."
"That's different."
If she were in the car, he wouldn't have chosen to run.
"You're injured!" Song Ning looked at the blood on his hand, diluted by the rain.
Shen Yuxiu chuckled: "You're right, when it comes to fighting, I don't have as much experience as you."
He could still laugh at this moment!
Although Song Ning was angry, he wouldn't be foolish enough to turn around and fight the people behind him now.
The sound of rain partially masked the footsteps behind her, making it impossible for Song Ning to judge their distance, and she couldn't carelessly turn around.
Although the downhill mountain road is paved with cement, one can easily slip and fall if one is not careful. She cannot be a burden.
She gripped Shen Yuxiu's hand tightly and ran at full speed.
In running, Shen Yuxiu is far superior to Song Ning.
After high school, Song Ning hadn't run anything except the 800-meter race. At this point, he was running at almost his maximum speed and was starting to pant. In contrast, Shen Yuxiu was also panting, but he was clearly still very relaxed.
But if things continued like this, Song Ning felt a strange sense of panic as she looked at the blood staining her hands.
She shook her head, trying to dispel the thoughts from her mind.
"Nothing will happen," Shen Yuxiu reassured gently, his voice seemingly possessing a magical quality that made people believe that nothing truly would go wrong.
Rainwater poured into Song Ning's panting mouth and nose, and she let out a short "hmm".
Shen Yuxiu, you cannot die.
Song Ning didn't know if 7 minutes had passed. Towards the end, her legs were almost out of her control, just mechanically and numbly lifting and lowering.
A silver Honda drove towards them, passed them, and stopped behind them.
"Shen... Yuxiu." Song Ning took a few steps out of habit, then collapsed into Shen Yuxiu's arms, panting heavily. "I... really can't run anymore..."
Shen Yuxiu supported her arm, his chest rising and falling slightly: "Well done, we'll be back soon."
"The one who... injured... you..."
She had to avenge the near loss of him.
Song Ning turned around, looking at the tall, reassuring man, and two other people, then at the people chasing them. She silently counted them.
There are only 8 people, one less than before.
“It will take at least 40 minutes to get up the mountain, and the police won’t arrive that quickly.” Shen Yuxiu turned her head to face the sky, preventing her from looking any further.
"That's... good then." Song Ning didn't want to watch anymore; it was too tiring, much more tiring than fighting. "Go to the car, I'll... bandage you up."
Song Ning sat in the back seat and rolled up Shen Yuxiu's sleeves.
A cut about 5 centimeters long, bloody and gaping open.
Song Ning opened the first-aid kit she had taken from the trunk.
Disinfect, stop bleeding, and bandage.
After finishing, Song Ning looked up and asked, "Which one?"
Shen Yuxiu said, "Never mind."
"If I were the one injured today, would you have let it go?" Song Ning's voice was calm, yet chilling. "Which one?"
Shen Yuxiu sighed: "I'll go with you."
Song Ning looked out of the car. Most of the people were lying down. The tall guy was just like his appearance; he was very good at fighting.
Song Ning took the umbrella, which was taken as agreement.
The two people were standing in front of a man.
The man was clutching his leg and yelling. When he saw Song Ning, he frantically kicked his leg back twice.
Song Ning handed the umbrella to another man, then squatted down and picked up the knife.
This knife is similar to a meat cleaver, but longer, with a pointed tip. The blood on the blade has been washed away almost completely.
"Mr. Shen, what is she trying to do?" Chen Biao said. "This is using vigilante justice, which is illegal."
"I was just acting in self-defense, how did that break the law?" Song Ning held the knife, looked up, and innocently stared at the tall man.
Chen Biao advised, "His leg will need at least three months of rest, is that really necessary?"
Rainwater splashed on the ground, and blood splattered back onto Song Ning.
Song Ning lowered her head and stabbed the man without any hesitation.
The man let out a scream of extreme terror.
The knife tip was severed from the man's abdomen, about 2 or 3 centimeters away.
Song Ning angrily shouted, "Let go!"
Chen Biao held Song Ning's hand tightly: "With that stab, he's definitely dead."
Song Ning's eyes were sinister: "If he lives, I'll pay his medical expenses; if he dies, I'll pay for his resettlement."
The man was already terrified out of his wits, clutching at his only lifeline and desperately pleading, "Big brother, save me! I don't want to die! Please, I came here with our boss! Don't kill me! Either... or cut off my arm too. I won't dodge, and I won't tell the police. Please, grandma, spare me!"
The man never expected the woman to be so ruthless. To be honest, he had actually shielded her from the injury.
He had originally intended to strike the woman from behind, but the man beside her blocked his way and kicked him. However, he was smart enough to know that he couldn't mention it at this moment, or he might really lose his life.
Song Ning was too lazy to listen to the nonsense in her ear. She was determined to make this man either die or be crippled. She struggled, but she was no match for the man's strength.
Her anger grew stronger, and she twisted the tip of the knife around, trying to force the man to let go, but he immediately blocked her.
Just as Song Ning was about to try again, she heard Shen Yuxiu say, "That's enough."
Shen Yuxiu squatted down, took Song Ning's hand, and said to Chen Biao, "Let go."
Chen Biao released his grip without hesitation.
Song Ning wasn't happy either, because Shen Yuxiu was holding her hand, and she looked at him angrily: "You don't agree either?"
"I'll do it myself, give it to me."
Seeing that the gauze on his hand was bleeding again, Song Ning immediately let go.
Shen Yuxiu took the knife and made a swift and precise cut on the man's arm.
The man screamed, blood streaming from between his fingers as he covered his wound.
"Don't let him die." After saying this to Chen Biao, Shen Yuxiu turned to Song Ning, "Is this alright?"
Song Ning pursed her lips, not entirely satisfied, but she didn't say anything more; she wouldn't let him kill anyone.
She stood up, took the umbrella from someone, and said to Shen Yuxiu with displeasure, "Go back to the car, or you'll have to bandage it again."
Watching Song Ning leave, the man on the ground breathed a sigh of relief as if he had escaped death. When he came to his senses, he found that his hands and feet were in excruciating pain.
The other three weren't much better off. This was the first time they had ever seen Shen Yuxiu hurt someone, which completely overturned their image of Shen Yuxiu.
"What are you standing there for? Didn't you hear we can't let him die? Why don't you stab him in the back?" Chen Biao roared.
One of them quickly squatted down, tore a piece of cloth from the man's body, and tied it tightly around his arm.
