Chapter 16: Canned Herrings That No One Wants?

Ge Lei is an ordinary young man in Fuhu Town. After the resurgence of darkness, his family was killed by cruel dark creatures.

He escaped by chance and, under the leadership of a local veteran Zhang Dashan, came to this place to build a new home.

Zhang Dashan was so powerful that he could easily kill dark creatures that ordinary people couldn't deal with. And every time he killed a dark creature, his strength would become stronger.

He spent the entire afternoon killing dozens of dark corpses and protecting these homeless people. Under his guidance, each of them contributed their own efforts to build this simple shelter.

In just one day, the number of people in the shelter increased from about twenty to over a hundred. Zhang Dashan had no choice but to ask them to continue expanding the shelter to prevent more refugees from arriving without a place to rest.

The next morning, Ge Lei spotted a couple outside the shelter. The boy was wearing tattered clothes and was covered in blood. The girl, though much better, was also covered in filth, her face stained and difficult to discern.

"Young man, can you let us in? We are willing to exchange food for some drinking water." The young man raised his head and shouted at him.

Ge Lei grumbled inwardly, "Why bother asking for help? Why trade food for drinking water? The apocalypse has arrived, and no one is better off than the next. There's really no need to try to be nice in front of your girlfriend at this point."

Although he thought so in his heart, he didn't say anything outwardly. He asked someone to open the door made of heavy wooden stakes. The couple walked in slowly, looking around curiously.

Only then did Ge Lei discover the difference between the two.

The survivors who had come seeking shelter before, each one exhausted and banging desperately on the wooden door, as if grasping at straws, had no trace of anxiety or nervousness, and they were in exceptionally good condition.

It doesn't look like they are here to seek asylum.

"How much food do you have, and how do you plan to exchange it for purified water?"

"We would like to exchange three cans of herring for three bottles of plain mineral water."

"Canned herring?" Ge Lei scoffed. "Not even dogs would eat this stuff, and you're trying to exchange it for water?"

To his surprise, the ragged young man in front of him was accompanied by a much younger and more beautiful woman.

If she hadn't looked a little haggard from traveling so much, and dressed up properly, she would probably be as pretty as a movie star.

After hearing what she said, she not only frowned, but also looked at the young man beside her with complicated eyes.

This made Ge Lei secretly happy.

"Never mind. I'm just being soft-hearted. Three cans of herrings for a bottle of water. Consider it making a friend."

After saying this, he pretended to be calm, but in fact he was staring at the girl's reaction without blinking.

The expected look of gratitude did not appear. Instead, the girl looked at him as if he was a fool, which made Ge Lei stunned.

"What? You don't think it's worth it? Humph, then do whatever you want. There are hundreds of people in this yard. If even one person is willing to trade a bottle of water for three cans of herrings, I lose!"

After saying this, Ge Lei picked up the loudspeaker and started shouting without waiting for the young man and the girl to agree.

"Hey, hey, hey, two people want to exchange three cans of herring for three bottles of mineral water. If you're willing, bring your things over here!"

"Brother Leizi, canned herrings? What's the difference between this and rice fields?"

"It's impossible to exchange it for mineral water, but I'm willing to exchange it for foot washing water."

"Don't be ridiculous. If all three cans of herrings were opened, would anyone dare stay in this shelter?"

""

Ge Lei watched the girl's expression change from nervousness to daze, and then from daze to despair, and he felt so relieved in his heart.

"Well, I didn't lie to you, did I?"

He looked at the young man with a smug look, expecting him to immediately beg him to agree to the deal and receive grateful glances from both of them. However, to his surprise, the young man continued to look at him calmly.

Especially the corners of his mouth, which even curled up a little bit involuntarily, as if he didn't take the words of the people around him to heart at all.

"Dad, you don't really want to change it! We don't have much water left!"

At this moment, a girl's voice sounded behind Ge Lei. Ge Lei recognized them, a father and daughter. It was said that they were professors from a big city. When they returned home to visit their family, they were suddenly trapped here when darkness revived.

This university professor knows a lot of knowledge, and even Zhang Dashan is polite when speaking to him.

"Change! Why not? Girls, stay out of other people's business. Get out of here!"

The professor was surprisingly determined, as if exchanging three bottles of mineral water for three cans of herrings was a good deal, which puzzled the people nearby.

"No, Dad, we only have these three bottles of water left. If you replace them all with canned herrings, how are we going to survive in the future?" The daughter grabbed the professor's clothes tightly and refused to let him leave no matter what.

The scene before him confused Ge Lei.

What is this for?

What about acting?

Could it be that this father and daughter and this couple are old acquaintances and are willing to act as each other's shills?

But it doesn’t look like it!

Everyone knows this father and daughter. The father is a famous professor at a university, and the daughter was admitted to a prestigious university not long ago.
