Chapter 26: Tears

The April rain fell heavily, shrouding the entire city in a damp mist. Bai Ke stood at the dormitory window, watching the raindrops slide down the glass, looking like tears.

Her right hand was still in a cast, but the pain in her heart ran deeper.

Yesterday afternoon, Chen Yiyu's mother suddenly came to see her. The woman who had always been elegant and calm now looked haggard, with a heavy shadow under her eyes.

"Bai Ke, I know I shouldn't have come to you," Chen's mother's voice trembled, "but I really have no other choice."

They sat down in a cafe near the school, and Chen's mother took out a document from her bag and pushed it in front of her.

"This is the Qiu family's ultimatum." Mother Chen's fingertips turned white. "If Chen Yiyu doesn't accept the condition of getting engaged to Luo Di after going to Germany, they will not only withdraw all their financial support, but also take back the house we live in now."

Bai Ke flipped through the documents, his heart sinking. It was a debt agreement, clearly stating that the huge debt owed by Chen's father during his lifetime was mortgaged with the property they currently lived in.

"That house... is the only legacy left by Chen Yiyu's grandfather." Chen's mother finally shed tears. "If it's taken back, I really don't know where else I can go."

Bai Ke clutched her coffee cup tightly, her hands and feet cold. She recalled Chen Yiyu's expression when he talked about the old house—it held his childhood memories, traces of his father, and was his last harbor in the midst of the storm.

"Does Chen Yiyu know about this?" she asked softly.

Mother Chen shook her head: "He doesn't know that the Qiu family is threatening me with the house. That child is too stubborn, and I don't want to see him sacrifice his lifelong happiness for this."

Bai Ke understood Chen's mother's painstaking efforts. However, she also couldn't bear to see Chen Yiyu lose his last home and his mother become homeless.

"Auntie, I understand." Bai Ke raised his head and tried to keep his voice steady. "I'll take care of it."

The next day, Bai Ke asked Chen Yiyu to meet at the bookstore they often visited. The rain was still falling, and she stood at the door of the bookstore waiting for him, holding her dark blue umbrella.

Chen Yiyu hurried over, his hair wet from the rain. Seeing her, he immediately smiled gently: "Why did you ask me out so suddenly? Does your hand still hurt?"

Bai Ke shook her head and led him into the cafe on the second floor of the bookstore. It was very quiet here, with only the sound of rain and the occasional sound of turning pages.

"Chen Yiyu, I have something to say to you." Her voice was soft, but extremely firm.

Chen Yiyu noticed the abnormality in her tone and frowned slightly: "What's wrong?"

"Let's break up."

The air seemed to freeze. Chen Yiyu was stunned, as if he didn't understand what she was saying.

"Why?" It took him a long time to find his voice.

Bai Ke lowered her eyes, not daring to look him in the eye: "I can't let go of Lu Zihan."

This sentence was like a sharp blade, not only hurting Chen Yiyu, but also hurting herself.

"What did you say?" Chen Yiyu's voice trembled, "Bai Ke, look at me and say what you just said again."

Bai Ke forced herself to look up and meet his incredulous gaze. "I'm telling you, I've decided to be with Lu Zihan. He's been admitted to graduate school at this university, and his family is well-off, so he can give me a stable future. And you... you still want to go to Germany, and I can't wait."

Chen Yiyu stood up suddenly, and the chair made a harsh sound on the floor: "I don't believe it! Look into my eyes!"

"It's true." Bai Ke's voice was surprisingly calm. "I'm sorry, Chen Yiyu. I've waited too long. I'm really tired."

She took out the dark blue umbrella from her bag and placed it gently on the table: "Here, I'm giving it back to you."

Chen Yiyu stared at the umbrella, his eyes turning from shock to pain, and finally to deathly silence. He said nothing and turned away from the cafe.

Bai Ke watched him leave, tears finally falling. She knew that this time, she had really lost him.

That night, Chen Yiyu was completely drunk. When Li Meng found him at the bar, he was sitting alone in a corner with a pile of empty bottles in front of him.

"She doesn't want me anymore..." Chen Yiyu raised his head, his eyes bloodshot, "Li Meng, she doesn't want me anymore."

Li Meng had never seen Chen Yiyu like this before. The always calm and composed Chen Yiyu now looked like a lost child, vulnerable and vulnerable.

"What's going on?" Li Meng snatched the bottle from his hand. "Why is Bai Ke suddenly with Lu Zihan? This is impossible!"

Chen Yiyu smiled bitterly and opened another bottle of wine: "She said she couldn't wait any longer... She said she wanted a stable future..."

"Bullshit!" Li Meng couldn't help but curse, "Bai Ke is not that kind of person at all! There must be some misunderstanding!"

But Chen Yiyu could no longer listen. He lay on the table, whispering Bai Ke's name over and over again.

Li Meng looked at his painful expression, sighed, took out his phone and sent a message to Bai Ke: "Where are you? Chen Yiyu is drunk and keeps calling you."

A few minutes later, Bai Ke replied: "Take good care of him. We... have broken up."

The rain continued to fall, shrouding the entire city in a damp darkness. Bai Ke stood on the dormitory balcony, letting the rain soak her clothes. The plaster cast on her right wrist was soaked by the rain, sending a stinging pain, but it was not even a ten-thousandth of the pain in her heart.

She knew that from now on, they would never again stand side by side under that dark blue umbrella.

At this moment, in the bar, Chen Yiyu, who was drunk and unconscious, was holding the bookmark that Bai Ke gave him tightly in his hand.

The rainy night was long, and their love seemed to have really come to an end.
