Chapter 115 Temporary Manager

After resting at home for a day, Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang carried baskets to the Zhou family's house.

"Big sister, you're back." Cai Xiaomei greeted her warmly, carefully looking Cai Damei up and down.

Cai Damei gained a lot of weight after taking good care of herself during her postpartum period.

Although the scent was masked by aromatherapy, you could still smell a faint milky scent when you got close.

"Big sister, you," Cai Xiaomei wanted to ask Cai Damei if she had really had a child with someone, but it wasn't appropriate to ask directly.

"Little sister, let me tell you something. On my way back, I met a merchant from the Hu region. They brought lots of milk tablets and milk cakes, they're so delicious. You must try them."

As she spoke, Cai Damei took a milk tablet from the basket and put it into Cai Xiaomei's mouth.

The rich, milky flavor exploded in Cai Xiaomei's mouth.

Cai Xiaomei chewed it, her eyes lighting up. "It smells so good! Is there more?"

Cai Damei laughed, "We sisters have similar tastes. If I like it, you'll definitely like it too. I brought you 4 jin (2 catties)."

Cai Damei opened the basket, inside were packaged milk tablets.

"Big sister, you didn't bring everything you bought, did you?" Cai Xiaomei asked, looking at the half-full basket of milk tablets.

"I still have five or six jin at home, enough for me to eat."

"Milk tablets aren't cheap, are they? I'll just keep half a pound for myself to try." Cai Xiaomei felt that her older sister had given her too much.

“It’s not a big deal for the older sister to buy food for the younger sister.” Cai Damei handed the basket to Cai Xiaomei.

Having said that, Cai Xiaomei stopped refusing to accept it.

“That’s right, there’s still some dried fruit I bought for the children in the basket. Don’t keep it all, give it to the children to eat,” Cai Damei instructed.

"Okay, I know." Cai Xiaomei put the basket inside and came out to talk to Cai Damei, mainly asking her about her experiences on the road.

Cai Damei repeated what she had said before very fluently.

Ye Yunniang then headed towards the kitchen.

Inside the kitchen, Zhang Cai'er and her daughter Zhou Lingling were busy preparing lunch.

When Zhang Cai'er saw Ye Yunniang, she didn't greet her or say anything, and kept her head down doing her work.

"Auntie's here," Zhou Lingling, who was sitting in front of the stove tending the fire, greeted her warmly.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" Ye Yunniang asked, rolling up her sleeves.

"No need," Zhang Cai'er refused curtly.

"Auntie, my mother and I are busy in the kitchen. It's smoky and a bit choking. Please come out and sit down," Zhou Lingling said, trying to make amends for her mother.

"Alright, I'll go for a walk." Ye Yunniang agreed and left the kitchen.

Not wanting to disturb Cai Damei and her sister's conversation, Ye Yunniang walked out of the Zhou family shop and stood outside for a while.

In the kitchen, Zhou Lingling advised Zhang Cai'er, "Mom, don't hold a grudge against your aunt. Your aunt has nothing to do with what happened to Grandma's family."

"If it weren't for her, how could your uncle and aunt have fallen out like this?" Zhang Cai'er truly regretted introducing Ye Yunniang to work at the Jiang family.

"The reason why my uncle and aunt are fighting so fiercely is because of Uncle Wan's accident, and it has nothing to do with my cousin's wife," Zhou Lingling heard from Cai Xiaomei.

"He got into trouble because he went to see Ye Yunniang," Zhang Cai'er retorted. Then, sensing something was amiss, she lowered her head and busied herself with her work.

"Mom, what did you say?" Zhou Lingling's tone changed. She glanced outside to make sure Cai Xiaomei and the others hadn't heard what was happening in the kitchen.

Zhou Lingling got up and went to Zhang Cai'er. "Mother, tell me honestly. What happened to Uncle Wan?"

"It's nothing, little girl. Don't think too much. Hurry up and start the fire." Zhang Cai'er was unwilling to talk.

"Mother, what are you hiding? Tell me quickly," Zhou Lingling urged.

"No, I didn't hide anything." Zhang Cai'er paused her chopping motion for a moment, then continued chopping.

"Mom, I'm going to find Grandma." Zhou Lingling turned to leave.

Zhang Cai'er grabbed her.

"I'll talk, I'll talk." Zhang Cai'er glanced outside and whispered that Wan Guiyong was arrested after going to find Ye Yunniang.

"The constable who arrested your Uncle Wan. I've met him; he's on good terms with your great-aunt's family."

After hearing this, Zhou Lingling uttered two words, "Serves him right."

"What did you say?" Zhang Cai'er was dissatisfied with Zhou Lingling's words.

"What's wrong?" Cai Xiaomei, who was inside the courtyard, asked when she heard the noise from the kitchen.

"Oh, it's nothing. Mom, you talk to Auntie." Zhang Cai'er replied loudly. She reached out and pinched Zhou Lingling, "Don't talk nonsense to your grandma."

Zhou Lingling remained silent, but she gained a deeper understanding of Zhang Cai'er's and her family's attitude that everything they did was right.

She recalled how Zhang Cai'er had been whispering in her ear, urging her to marry her cousin, a marriage that would strengthen family ties. She also mentioned that Zhang Cai'er was unhappy in the Zhang family and that she would go to their home to support her.

Before today, Zhou Lingling thought her mother's words made sense. But now, Zhou Lingling feels she needs to think about it carefully.

Zhang Cai'er was unaware that her attitude towards Ye Yunniang had caused her long-planned marriage to fall through.

Ye Yunniang was standing outside for a short while when she ran into Baise, who was returning from outside.

"They came to find me."

“My mother is back, and I’m accompanying her to visit my aunt,” Ye Yunniang explained.

"Come sit in my shop for a while. I've come up with a few new embroidery patterns. Could you take a look?" Baise invited.

"Okay, I'll tell my uncle." Ye Yunniang entered the Zhou family shop, spoke to her uncle Zhou who was sitting at the counter, and then followed Baise to the embroidery shop.

Inside the Baise embroidery shop, two display screens were empty.

"Are you going to close the door?"

"Yes. After Tie Yi and I get married, I will be leaving Jiangcheng for a few months," Baise explained.

"You can find someone to help out for a while." Ye Yunniang didn't want the Baise Embroidery Shop to close down.

"Trustworthy people are hard to find." Baise had originally planned to look for someone, but after searching around, they couldn't find a suitable one.

As Baise spoke, his eyes lit up.

"Yunniang, can you cover for me for a while?"
