Chapter 12 Heat

This day was a bit of an ordeal for Ye Yunniang.

Back at Zhiyuxuan, Ye Yunniang sat down wearily against the table.

Coral led the people in, and Ye Yunniang quickly stood up.

"Nanny Ye has taken excellent care of the young master; Madam, you are worthy of this reward."

"Thank you for your kindness, Madam. Taking care of the young master is my duty," Ye Yunniang declined.

Coral gave Ye Yunniang a few more words of advice before leaving with her entourage.

Ye Yunniang examined the gifts bestowed upon her by Madam Jiang Si: a bolt of tender green cotton silk, soft and comfortable, perfect for making clothes for Pan'er; several gold-inlaid jade hairpins; a dozen or so silk flowers; and a pair of red gold bracelets.

Ye Yunniang marveled at Madam Jiang's generosity.

Ye Yunniang carefully arranged the rewards, selecting four silk flowers that Li'er liked and giving two more to Granny Shi.

Pear and Granny Shi happily accepted it.

Everyone in Zhiyuxuan was happy, except for Ding Fang. She was dissatisfied with Ye Yunniang, who had received the reward.

"Sister, you must be careful of Nurse Ding," Li'er reminded her.

"I will." Ye Yunniang also noticed Ding Fang's sinister gaze and sensed that she was about to cause trouble.

Ye Yunniang was vigilant and would carefully check the room every time she returned to Zhiyuxuan to make sure that nothing was missing or that there was an extra item.

Ding Fang wanted to make a move, but Ding Xiang stopped her.

"Now it's just you and Ye Yunniang. If something happens to her, you'll be the first person they suspect. Don't cause any trouble. Your priority is to take good care of the Sixth Young Master."

Ding Fang was unwilling, but Ding Xiang had instructed her so she dared not disobey.

Ye Yunniang entered Fanghua Courtyard, and Ding Fang, as before, yawned and left.

Before leaving, he simply said, "Young master is sleeping."

Ye Yunniang walked to the bedside, looked at the sleeping Jiang Tingjun, and reached out to touch his little face.

Upon touching him, something felt off; Jiang Tingjun's forehead was a bit hot.

Ye Yunniang's voice tightened, "Hongcai,"

"What's wrong, Sister Ye?" Hongcai ran into the inner room. "What's wrong?"

“Wah…” Jiang Tingjun started crying first.

"The young master has a fever." Ye Yunniang said, unwrapping the bundle, revealing her bottom covered in excrement and urine.

Upon hearing this, Hongcai ran out, and soon another maid brought her warm water.

Ye Yunniang wiped Jiang Tingjun's bottom.

While wiping, I noticed a few small red spots on his bottom. Touching them made Jiang Tingjun cry louder.

Ye Yunniang recalled what the midwife had said: the buttocks were wrapped too tightly, making them stuffy, and there was a problem with not cleaning up excrement and urine in time.

Ye Yunniang didn't put on a diaper again, and gently wiped him clean. In the meantime, she kept coaxing Jiang Tingjun.

"Young master, the wet nurse has cleaned you up. Is your bottom any more comfortable now that it's clean...?"

Zi Yuan strode in, reached out and touched Jiang Tingjun's forehead; it was indeed a little hot.

The usually composed Zi Yuan's expression changed drastically, and she turned and ran out.

Before long, Madam Jiang Si and Jiang Mingrui arrived.

Jiang Tingjun was feeling unwell and was whimpering in Ye Yunniang's arms, refusing to let anyone touch him.

"I just said you were good the day before yesterday. And this is how you take care of Jun'er!" Madam Jiang scolded. If Jiang Tingjun hadn't been in Ye Yunniang's arms, she would have wanted to slap her a few times.

“It’s no use scolding her now. Where’s the doctor? Why hasn’t he arrived yet?” Jiang Mingrui said sternly, training Zi Yuan beside him.

"I've already sent someone to invite them; they'll be here soon," Zi Yuan replied.

Soon the doctor was pulled in at a brisk pace.

The doctor who entered displeased Madam Jiang. "Why is it Doctor Li? Where's Doctor Du? He's an expert in pediatrics."

"Doctor Du was taken away by the Third Madam and her men, who said that the Fifth Miss was feeling unwell this morning."

"You Bai Xiuxiu, you've delayed my son! I'm not finished with her!" Madam Jiang Si was furious and wanted to confront Madam Jiang San, but Jiang Mingrui stopped her.

"You stay here with Jun'er, I'm going to confront Third Brother," Jiang Mingrui said as he left.

Doctor Li entered the room to take Jiang Tingjun's pulse, finding that he had caught a chill during the night and was now feverish.

The medicine was prescribed.

Jiang Tingjun took the medicine and fell asleep.

Looking at her son sleeping on the bed, still groaning in discomfort, Madam Jiang could no longer contain her suppressed anger and slapped Ye Yunniang twice.

"If anything happens to Jun'er, I'll take your life."

"Madam, last night was..."

Upon hearing Ye Yunniang's rebuttal, Madam Jiang said, "Shut up and get out."

Ye Yunniang was pulled out by Ziyuan. "Hongcai escorted Nurse Ye back and instructed Granny Shi that the wet nurses were not allowed to come in or out."

"Yes." Hongcai responded and pulled Ye Yunniang away.

When Ye Yunniang returned to Zhiwuxuan, Li'er and Granny Shi were cleaning the courtyard.

Seeing Ye Yunniang return with a strange expression, the two felt a chill run down their spines; something had happened.

Hongcai relayed Ziyuan's instructions to Granny Shi and then left.

After listening, Granny Shi closed the door of Zhiyuxuan.

"Sister, let's go back inside first," Li'er whispered to Ye Yunniang, who was standing in the courtyard lost in thought.

Ye Yunniang returned to the room and stood before the dressing table, looking at the two red handprints on her face, feeling wronged. She hadn't done anything wrong, so why was she the one who got hit?

A knock sounded at the door, and Ye Yunniang quickly wiped away her tears.

"Sister, I've fetched some water. Use the well water to soothe your face," Li'er said, pouring some water from the bucket into a basin. She then wrung out a damp cloth and handed it to Ye Yunniang.

Ye Yunniang took the cloth, spread it out, and applied it to her face. The pain made her involuntarily let out a hiss.

"Sister, what happened? Who hit you?"

Ye Yunniang shook her head and didn't say anything, "Li'er, stay away from me these next few days. Be careful not to get implicated."

Pear hesitated for a moment, "I'm not afraid. I believe my sister hasn't done anything wrong. Nothing will happen."

"Thank you, Pear." Ye Yunniang said, touched. "I'm a little thirsty."
