Chapter 31 Literacy

After finishing her breakfast early in the morning, Ye Yunniang went to Fanghua Courtyard to meet with Tao Hong.

"Nanny Ye, the young master is still sleeping," Tao Hong said, and left. She hadn't slept all night and was very tired.

Ye Yunniang entered the inner room, where Jiang Tingjun was sleeping soundly.

Ye Yunniang sat by his side, waiting for him to wake up.

When Jiang Tingjun woke up, Ye Yunniang fed him milk first. Then she dressed him, washed his face, and rinsed his mouth. After all that, Jiang Tingjun was hungry again.

Hongcai brought over minced meat and egg custard, and Ye Yunniang fed Jiang Tingjun a little.

All the tables, chairs, and stools in the outer room were moved away and replaced with a large fur blanket.

Jiang Tingjun was placed on the blanket, and Hongcai and Hongyin brought over a toy box.

It's full of Jiang Tingjun's toys.

Take them out one by one.

"Young master, what toy do you want to play with today?" Hongcai asked, taking out a wooden sword and waving it in front of Jiang Tingjun to attract his attention.

Jiang Tingjun glanced at the wooden sword, then continued looking at the box.

Hongyin took out a ball with bells sewn onto its four corners and shook it. "Little master, how about playing with this bell ball?"

Jiang Tingjun glanced at the ball with his big, round eyes and coldly uttered a single word, "No."

“You don’t like the bell ball. Little master, would you like to play with the rattle drum?” Hongcai took out the rattle drum and shook it gently.

A thumping sound rang out.

Jiang Tingjun looked at the rattle drum carefully, and with Hongcai and Hongyin's anticipation, he once again uttered "No".

Hongcai and Hongyin continued to take toys out of the box.

Cloth cat.

Cloth tiger.

Wooden dagger.

Little abacus.

Colorful clay figurines of cats, dogs, sheep, rabbits...

Nine-linked rings.

...

Jiang Tingjun took all the toys out of the box, but he didn't like any of them.

"No, no, no..." Jiang Tingjun urged, "Keep bringing out new ones."

"That's all, young master." Hongcai spread her hands in embarrassment; the box was empty.

Jiang Tingjun ignored all of that and pointed at the box, demanding that Hongcai take it again.

Ye Yunniang, who was watching from the side, got up and carried all the toys on the blanket into the box.

"Try it again."

Hongcai and Hongyin realized what was happening, picked up a rattle drum, shook it, and the thumping sound rang out again.

"Young master, would you like to play with the rattle drum?"

"No," Jiang Tingjun smiled.

"Young master, do you like the cloth tiger? Awoo~" Hongyin picked up the cloth tiger and imitated a tiger's roar.

"Ah...no." Jiang Tingjun chuckled.

Jiang Tingjun played a toy-picking game all day.

Hongcai and Hongyin's voices became hoarse from talking.

Jiang Tingjun, having a good time, chuckled and pounced on Ye Yunniang's legs, calling her "Grandma."

Ye Yunniang picked up Jiang Tingjun.

"Grandma." Jiang Tingjun hugged Ye Yunniang's neck and nuzzled his head against her neck.

Ye Yunniang felt a little ticklish and couldn't help but laugh out loud. She carried him into the inner room and fed him her milk.

Hold the baby upright and pat them to burp them before putting them to sleep in bed.

Hongcai went into the inner room and called Ye Yunniang to go to the outer room for dinner.

"Wait a little longer. The young master has just fallen asleep." Ye Yunniang gestured for her to speak softly.

Upon hearing this, Hongcai nodded and went to the outer room to keep watch.

After confirming that Jiang Tingjun was asleep, Ye Yunniang got up and went to the outer room. The blankets in the outer room had already been put away, and the table and chairs had been arranged.

"Have you eaten? Want to eat something together?" There were five dishes and a soup, but Ye Yunniang couldn't finish them all.

"I've eaten. Sister Ye, you eat. I'll go watch over the young master." Hongcai went into the inner room to keep watch.

After eating low-oil and low-salt meals for several months, Ye Yunniang was starting to crave stronger flavors.

After finishing the meal, put the food away in the lunchbox and wash your hands.

Ye Yunniang returned to the inner room and stayed with Hongcai to watch over the young master.

At night, to prevent herself from falling asleep, Ye Yunniang took out a needle and thread and started working.

Ye Yunniang made tiger-head shoes for Jiang Tingjun, his favorite kind of shoes.

After getting two stitches, Ye Yunniang looked up to check on Jiang Tingjun's condition.

Hongcai was also doing needlework; she was embroidering Buddhist scriptures.

She embroidered while reciting words.

"Hongcai, you can read!" Ye Yunniang exclaimed in surprise, and with a hint of envy.

“Yes, I know some characters,” Hongcai replied, noticing Ye Yunniang’s envious expression. “Nanny Ye wants to learn to read?”

"Yes, I do." Ye Yunniang didn't hide her thoughts.

"Our Jiang family has literacy training courses for servants. If Nurse Ye wants to learn to read, she can go to Xiaosongju next to Zhuyunxuan and register with Aunt Kong Ci."

The tuition was one tael of silver for 30 days. I learned to read and write at Xiaosongju under Aunt Kongci's guidance. Only after I learned to read and write did I have the opportunity to work at Fanghuayuan.” Hongcai said, still proud of her foresight at the time.

There were 15 maids who entered the Jiang family in that batch, and she was the one who fared the best.

"Thank you. I'll take a break tomorrow and go check on things," Ye Yunniang said.

As she was speaking, Hongluo walked in.

"Keep your voice down." Hong Luo's scolding tone made Hong Cai frown.

"We speak very softly so as not to wake the young master."

After confirming that Jiang Tingjun was asleep, Hongluo turned to look at Ye Yunniang and Hongcai.

"Aunt Lan has set a rule that you two must keep a close watch on the young master at night. I will report everything you do, including needlework and conversation, to Aunt Lan."

Hongcai didn't want to be reported, because Aunt Jinlan loved to find people who made mistakes and fine them.

"At night, people don't talk or do anything; just sitting there makes them sleepy."

"You dare to talk back?" Hong Luo frowned and wrote another note for Hong Cai.

Ye Yunniang stopped Hongcai, who was about to say something more, and said, "I know, I won't do needlework."

Honglu snorted at the two of them and left.

“Nanny Ye, she’s practically shitting on our heads, and you’re still putting up with it?” Hongcai was dissatisfied with Ye Yunniang’s attitude.

"Can't bear it? Should we argue with her or fight her? Hongcai, let me say something you won't like to hear. You and I are different."
