Ye Yunniang was very surprised when Hongcai immediately told her where her hometown was.
"How did you figure that out? My hometown is Anxian County, Lincheng."
“I’m also from Lincheng, I could tell as soon as I heard you speak,” Hongcai explained with a smile.
“I couldn’t hear any accent in your voice.”
“I’ve been in Jiangcheng for over ten years. I can still recognize my hometown dialect, but I can’t speak it anymore,” Hongcai sighed as she said this.
"How did you get into the Jiang residence?" Ye Yunniang asked curiously.
“I have eight siblings. I’m the fifth, not particularly tall or short. My family disliked me because I ate too much, so they sold me. Luckily, I came to the Jiang family, and now I have no worries about food and clothing and even get 400 yuan a month.” Hongcai is very satisfied with her current life.
Do you miss home?
"I was just thinking about it at first, but now I've almost forgotten what my parents look like." Hongcai laughed, then took out some melon seeds from a hidden pocket in her sleeve. "Nanny Ye, have some melon seeds."
“Okay.” Ye Yunniang did not refuse and took one in her hand.
"Nanny Ye, how many years have you been in Jiangcheng? How did you get into the Jiang residence?"
"I couldn't stay in my hometown, so my mother and I came to Jiangcheng to stay with my aunt. It's hard to find work outside, so I came to try my luck when I heard that the Jiang family was hiring wet nurses. I thought that even if I didn't make it, it would be good to take 500 coins home." Ye Yunniang smiled shyly as she said this.
“Nanny Ye, this is your first child, isn’t it? Of all the nannies, you’ve recovered the best. Your waistline looks like you’ve never given birth.” Hongcai said, reaching out to touch Ye Yunniang’s waist.
Ye Yunniang flinched slightly, feeling slightly uncomfortable, and laughed, "I have ticklish spots on my waist."
"It was my fault. I shouldn't have touched my sister so casually." Hongcai apologized, then took out a handful of melon seeds and stuffed them into Ye Yunniang's hand.
"Sister, have some sunflower seeds."
“Eating sunflower seeds can cause internal heat,” Ye Yunniang shook her head.
"Oh dear, I forgot." Hongcai said, looking outside and then letting out a long sigh of relief.
"What's wrong?" Ye Yunniang followed her gaze and looked outside.
"The doctor instructed that wet nurses shouldn't eat things like melon seeds that are considered 'heaty' (causing internal heat). Sister Ziyuan specifically told us little maids not to eat melon seeds in front of you. I forgot for a moment," Hongcai said, slapping her head.
"Quickly gather up the sunflower seeds, and sweep up the sunflower seed shells on the ground too," Ye Yunniang said, getting up to get a broom.
"Sister, don't move. How can you do it? I'll do it, I'll do it." Hongcai took the broom and swept up the sunflower seed shells on the ground.
Hongcai came to the tea room, walked around the screen, and went to the couch.
Zi Yuan leaned against the couch to rest.
Hongcai stepped forward and told Ziyuan everything she had said to Ye Yunniang.
"Not bad at all." Zi Yuan raised her chin slightly. "Bring the yam and red bean cake."
Hongcai responded immediately and carried the yam and red bean cake back to the main room.
"Sister, come and eat yam and red bean cake."
Ye Yunniang was standing by the bed, bending over to check on Jiang Tingjun as he slept.
Jiang Tingjun seemed to smell the aroma of the pastries as well, and his little nose twitched.
Ye Yunniang couldn't help but smile at her adorable appearance.
After tucking the blanket around Jiang Tingjun, Ye Yunniang walked over to Hongcai, took a piece, and took a small bite to taste it.
It was a sweetness Ye Yunniang had never tasted before. "Delicious."
"Sister, eat more. Madam specifically instructed us to make this for you sisters." Hongcai urged Ye Yunniang to eat more.
Ye Yunniang took a piece and handed it to Hongcai, saying, "Let's eat together."
Hongcai took the yam and red bean cake that Ye Yunniang handed her and started eating it.
Ye Yunniang ate a small piece, then noticed Jiang Tingjun making a move out of the corner of her eye, so she quickly wiped her hands and went over.
"The young master is awake." Ye Yunniang said, first checking if he had urinated, then turning to the edge of the bed to get a clean diaper.
Tear the wet diaper open and throw it into the basin next to you, put on a clean diaper, and get dressed.
Throughout the process, Jiang Tingjun simply watched Ye Yunniang's actions with wide eyes, without shedding a single tear.
Ye Yunniang picked up Jiang Tingjun and asked, "Is your young master hungry?"
Jiang Tingjun seemed to understand the question and let out an "Ah".
Ye Yunniang pulled open her clothes and fed Jiang Tingjun.
Jiang Tingjun was full and turned his head away, unwilling to eat anymore.
Ye Yunniang straightened her clothes, picked Jiang Tingjun up upright, and let his head rest on her shoulder. She supported him with one hand, and with the other hand, she gently patted his back or stroked his baby from top to bottom.
"Sister, why do you do this?" Hongcai asked curiously.
"The midwife in the village taught me this. She said that doing this would prevent the baby from spitting up." Ye Yunniang didn't understand why it would prevent spitting up.
"So there's a reason for this," Hongcai exclaimed, realizing that breastfeeding a baby is no easy task.
Ye Yunniang held him upright for about the time it takes to brew a cup of tea before changing his position.
Jiang Tingjun objected; he didn't want to be carried horizontally. Ye Yunniang had no choice but to carry him upright again.
Hongcai used a rattle drum to attract Jiang Tingjun's attention and coaxed him along with her.
It wasn't until 9 PM that Shiliu arrived to replace Ye Yunniang.
Ye Yunniang explained Jiang Tingjun's situation clearly and returned to Zhiyuxuan.
Granny Shi was guarding the door, and Ye Yunniang quickly walked over and said thank you for your hard work.
"Thank you for your hard work, Grandma."
"It's no trouble at all, it's what an old woman should do. Nurse Ye, go back to your room and rest." Granny Shi said, yawning.
“Okay, Mother-in-law, you should go back to your room and rest too.” Ye Yunniang agreed and walked towards her room.
The water in the kettle was warm, so I simply washed myself and lay down to rest.
In her sleep, Pear knocked on the door, reminding her that it was time for breakfast.
Ye Yunniang got up, washed up, and had breakfast: two boiled eggs, a bowl of millet porridge, and several small dishes of unidentifiable side dishes. The food tasted pretty good.
After Ye Yunniang finished breakfast, Li'er went to tidy up the clothes she had changed out of last night.
"I'll wash my own clothes." Ye Yunniang wasn't used to having others wash her clothes.
