"Who are Jiang Mingrui and Zhuang Meixue?" Cai Damei had never heard of these two names.
“Jiang Mingrui is Jin Huifang’s man, and Zhuang Meixue is Jin Huifang’s second sister-in-law,” Bao Min explained to Cai Damei.
"Oh. Jin Huifang told my daughter-in-law herself that her husband and second sister-in-law abandoned their wife, children, and parents and ran away." Cai Damei looked down on the two who ran away.
Bao Min smiled, pursed his lips, and snorted, "Jiang Mingzhe, you've finally met your match."
"What did you say, sir?"
Bao Min snorted, "Go on, how did you get here?"
"Today I was selling vegetables at a street stall. My next-door neighbor came over and told me that someone had abandoned a child in front of my house."
"Get to the point." The clerk taking notes interrupted Cai Damei, asking, "Where's Jin Huifang? What are you talking about about a lost child? Don't you know he's tired from taking notes?"
"That's the point I made." Cai Damei rolled her eyes at the clerk. Then, realizing what she'd said, she felt a little scared.
"Tong Mo," Bao Min called out to the clerk, gesturing for him to be quiet, then looked at Cai Damei, "You continue."
"Oh, okay." Cai Damei was satisfied with Bao Min's attitude and wanted to continue. She paused, "Where was I?"
“A child has gone missing in front of your house,” Bao Min warned.
"Oh right, there's a child in front of my house. When I got home, I asked my daughter-in-law. She recognized the child as Jin Huifang's child at a glance."
With her father, that scoundrel who abandoned his wife and children, as an example, I assumed Jin Huifang would also abandon her child and run away.
I rushed to Yangshi Lane to find Jin Huifang and demand an explanation.
"You can't just abandon your child at my doorstep. My daughter-in-law and I don't owe the Jiang family anything." Cai Damei was very angry.
"You were the first one in? How did you get in?"
"The door wasn't locked, so I slammed it open. Then I pushed open the door to the main room, and then..." Cai Damei couldn't continue; the scene was too terrifying.
Did you see any other living people when you came in?
Cai Damei thought about it carefully and shook her head.
At that moment, she was completely focused on getting an explanation from Jin Huifang. She didn't notice whether anyone else was in the courtyard.
Bao Min asked a few more questions and finally instructed Cai Damei not to leave Jiangcheng. The authorities might come to question her again.
Cai Damei responded and left the interrogation room.
As darkness fell, Tie Xiong, worried about Cai Damei returning alone, volunteered to escort her home.
"It's my turn to go this afternoon," Ye Yunniang said, blaming herself for frightening Cai Damei.
"Yunniang, don't take everything on yourself. Even the Bodhisattvas in the temple don't dare to have everything go their way. You're just overthinking things." Cai Damei patted Ye Yunniang's shoulder.
Ye Yunniang leaned her head on Cai Damei's shoulder, her gaze meeting that of the sleeping Jiang Tingjun.
Jin Huifang wanted to entrust the child to her for upbringing.
Ye Yunniang didn't know whether she should be grateful to Jin Huifang for valuing her, or saddened.
Raising a child is not easy.
“This child is pitiful; his father ran away and his mother died. We’ll take him in,” Cai Damei decided, for the sake of the two silver notes.
"Mother, you are so good to me." Ye Yunniang's eyes filled with tears, and she vowed in her heart to work hard to earn money and take good care of Cai Damei.
"I'm your mother. If I'm not good to you, who will I be good to?"
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law talked until dawn.
Ye Yunniang tidied herself up and rushed to the market, where she bought a magnificent rooster.
Seeing a black-boned chicken in the coop, and thinking of Cai Damei's hard work these past two days, I bought another black-boned chicken to take home and make steam.
Cai Damei took the chicken and went to the backyard to kill it, while Ye Yunniang boiled water.
The rooster is stir-fried in a large pot, while the black-boned chicken is simmered in soup on a small stove.
Li Pan and Jiang Tingjun had only spent one morning together, yet they were already calling each other "brother" and "younger brother." Their relationship was extremely close, showing no trace of the quarrel they had engaged in the previous night.
At noon, Pan'er ate two big chicken legs as she wished.
In the afternoon, Tie Xiong arrived and asked Ye Yunniang to take Jiang Tingjun to the yamen.
Cai Damei was worried, so she entrusted Pan'er to Liang Maimiao's care. She then accompanied Ye Yunniang to the prefectural government office.
Cai Damei stood at the door, holding Jiang Tingjun, waiting for Ye Yunniang.
Tie Xiong led Ye Yunniang to the study, stopped at the door, and let Ye Yunniang come in.
"My lord, you are upright and honest, so please speak your mind."
Ye Yunniang nodded and went inside.
Bao Min sat behind his desk, sizing up Ye Yunniang.
She's not exactly a stunning beauty. So why is she so captivating to Jiang Mingzhe?
Before leaving Jiangcheng, Jiang Mingzhe met with Bao Min. The Jiang family didn't mention him at all, only asking Bao Min to secretly take care of Ye Yunniang and make sure no one bullied her.
"Ahem." The clerk, Tong Mo, coughed twice, reminding Bao Min not to stare at people.
Bao Min snapped out of his daze and said, "Ms. Ye, tell me about what happened when you saw Jin Huifang at the market."
"Yes, sir." Ye Yunniang recounted everything that had happened during her meeting with Jin Huifang.
"Steamed buns. Did you buy them for Jin Huifang?"
"Yes, I bought them. I bought them from Guo's Steamed Bun Shop, 10 meat buns and 10 vegetable buns."
"Where is Jin Huifang going with the steamed buns?"
Ye Yunniang thought carefully, "She walked to the east side of the street."
"Did she have anything else in her hand?"
"No." Ye Yunniang had paid special attention to Jin Huifang's hands to see if she was wearing nail plates.
How much do you know about Jiang Mingrui and Zhuang Meixue?
Ye Yunniang looked up, puzzled as to why she was being asked this. She quickly lowered her head, "I don't know."
"Really?" Bao Min didn't believe it, but Jiang Mingzhe didn't tell Ye Yunniang.
"I, I, I really don't know."
Ye Yunniang knew nothing about what happened between Jiang Mingrui and Zhuang Meixue.
Seeing that Ye Yunniang didn't seem to be lying, Bao Min stopped asking questions and held up a painting.
