Chapter 73 The Truth About Going Home

Li Dong was surprised that Cai Damei had suddenly returned.

“Didn’t your father write to me saying that the heavy rain a while ago caused problems with Jun’er and his father’s graves, and asked me to bring Pan’er back to repair them?” After explaining the reason for her return, Cai Damei asked Li Dong, “Dongzi, where did you choose for your uncle and Jun’er’s new graves?”

“Impossible. When I went home last day, I went with my dad to burn paper money for Uncle and Xiaojun. Their graves are perfectly fine, nothing happened.” Li Dong retorted excitedly.

"real?"

“Auntie, you know what kind of person I am. I never lie to anyone,” Li Dong said with certainty.

"What's the story behind that letter?" Cai Damei asked, puzzled.

“Auntie, don’t go back to the village yet. I’m going home to talk to my dad first.” Li Dong sensed something was wrong.

Cai Damei agreed and told Li Dong that she would wait for his news at the Laifu Inn in town.

Cai Damei returned to the inn and told Ye Yunniang about it, without hiding it from Bao Min and Tong Mo.

"I'll go find out." Tong Mo was very good at gathering information.

There was still no news from Li Dong, but Tong Mo found out the reason.

Two years ago, Li Jun and his son passed away one after the other.

The Ye family planned to take Ye Yunniang back and sell her again.

The Huang family, a landlord in the neighboring village, wanted to bring good luck to their sick son, Jiabao.

Huang Jiabao's birth chart is a perfect match for Ye Yunniang's.

The Ye family accepted the money and promised to send Ye Yunniang to the Huang family at an auspicious time.

Unexpectedly, Ye Yunniang followed Cai Damei directly away from Lijia Village and went to Jiangcheng.

The auspicious time could not be delayed, so the landlord Huang chose the second woman who was compatible with Huang Jiabao.

"Huang Jiabao died of illness a month ago. He left no descendants; the landlord Huang was injured and unable to have children. The Huang family line is now extinct," Tong Mo concluded.

"What does this have to do with us coming back?" Ye Yunniang asked, puzzled.

"The landlord Huang has no descendants, and he thinks it's your fault. If you don't leave, he'll bring good luck to his son."

His son will surely be fine and have descendants. The Huang family line will not die out.” Tong Mo revealed the landlord Huang’s thoughts.

"Nonsense. I would never agree to Yunniang going to a marriage to ward off bad luck." Cai Damei retorted angrily. Ye Yunniang was a daughter-in-law of the Li family and would never agree to a marriage to ward off bad luck.

"This is Landlord Huang's idea. He blames your son's death on you," Tong Mo explained again.

"Li Wenkuo?"

“The letter wasn’t written by Li Wenkuo, it was written by Li Wu.” Cai Damei wasn’t surprised at all when she heard Li Wu’s name.

Li Wu is Li Min's cousin.

The two families are neighbors and relatives, so they should have a close relationship.

But Li Wu was jealous of Li Min since childhood and always wanted to compete with Li Min in everything.

After Li Jun and Li Min passed away, Li Wu was the one who jumped the highest.

The implication was that Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang were cursed to bring misfortune to their husbands and children, and that they wanted to drive the two widows out of Lijia Village.

Li Wu also said he was willing to adopt Li Pan and raise him well.

Everyone knew what Li Wu was planning.

Fortunately, Li Min had taken precautions and made arrangements before his death.

Cai Damei was decisive and sold her house and land without the slightest hesitation.

Ye Yunniang was very obedient. She packed her things, picked up Li Pan, and followed Cai Damei.

In order to acquire the Li family's land, Li Wu spent a considerable amount of money buying gifts for the Li family's elders.

In the end, it was all for naught.

Li Wu harbored intense hatred for Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang.

When Huang the landlord found Li Wu, he asked him to find a way to trick Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang back.

Li Wu readily agreed and took the money.

Li Wu knew everything about Li Min's family, even if he didn't say it.

Li Wu knew that Cai Damei had a younger sister who ran a shop in Jiangcheng. There was a high probability that Cai Damei would seek refuge with her.

Li Wu wrote a letter in Li Wenkuo's name, deceiving Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang into believing that their deceased husbands had an accident.

Sure enough, Cai Damei and Ye Yunniang received the message and returned.

What do they want to do?

"Landlord Huang has chosen an auspicious day for you to be buried with his son. As for Li Wu, he has already found a new home for Li Pan," Tong Mo told the two of them what he had found out.

Ye Yunniang looked at the ring on her hand, trying to calm herself down.

Do they know we're back?

"We don't know at the moment."

Bao Min and Tong Mo drove the carriage the whole way. They also had two children with them.

The men sent by the landlord, Huang, were targeting a group of two women and a child.

Sitting to the side, Bao Min spoke up, "Madam, I have a suggestion. We can make those who plot against us come up empty-handed."

***

The Li family villagers were chatting at the entrance of the village.

“A carriage is coming.”

"Whose relatives are visiting?"

"In our village, which family has a horse-drawn carriage?"

"The person driving the carriage looks familiar?"

"It does look familiar. Where have I seen it before?"

A group of women who were chatting looked thoughtfully at the woman driving the carriage.

Cai Damei drove the horse-drawn carriage to the village entrance and pulled on the rope to slow it down.

"Aunt Da Hui, you're still so healthy."

"Big Sister!" Aunt Da Hui recognized the voice and remembered who it was.

"It's me, Cai Damei. I'm back," Cai Damei responded warmly.

"Big sister, you've made a fortune after a year away. You're riding in a carriage now."

"Is the child in Yunniang's arms your grandson?"

"Of course he's my grandson. You can't hold someone else's grandson."

"Little sister, you've gotten so much fairer. Are you doing well?"

“Working indoors in the city, protected from the wind and rain, will definitely make you fair-skinned.”

"What brings you back this time?"

"Take Pan'er to see his father and grandfather. Let them know that Pan'er can talk now. He can call out to his grandfather and father."

"The children should come back to visit."
