Chapter 56 Contraceptive Soup

"I...I don't know."

Ye Yunniang said she didn't have feelings for him, but that was a lie. Yet, saying she did have feelings for him didn't seem right either.

“I shouldn’t have agreed to let you go to the dilapidated temple,” Cai Damei sighed.

"Mother, it was my choice to go." It's not Cai Damei's fault that all this happened; it was her own indecisiveness and soft-heartedness.

"Eat your noodles first. We'll talk after you finish," Cai Damei told Ye Yunniang to eat first.

Ye Yunniang finished her noodles with her head down, washed up, and tidied up the kitchen. She then sat down in front of Cai Damei.

"You and him,"

“It’s alright now, he’s gone.” Ye Yunniang’s heart ached as she said this.

"Not coming back?"

Ye Yunniang nodded and then shook her head.

"Tell me everything about going to the ruined temple."

Ye Yunniang recounted what had happened at the dilapidated temple the day before yesterday. Of course, she couldn't tell anyone, and she wouldn't tell anyone.

After listening for a long while, Cai Damei finally spoke, "He's right, we shouldn't get involved with the Jiang family."

The sordid ways of the wealthy are beyond the comprehension of those from humble backgrounds.

Ye Yunniang understood, but she was still a little worried about Jiang Tingjun, wondering how he was doing.

"No need to breastfeed anymore, it's time to wean." Cai Damei changed the subject and brought up the matter of weaning.

Ye Yunniang nodded, indicating that she wanted to wean her baby.

"You stay home and rest, I'll go find the doctor and get the medicine," Cai Damei said, getting up and walking outside.

"Mother, are you sick? Where do you feel unwell?" Ye Yunniang asked worriedly.

"I'm not feeling unwell. I'm just getting you some medicine."

"What medicine should I take?" Ye Yunniang asked, puzzled, as she was perfectly fine.

"Contraceptive Decoction".

Cai Damei left after saying just three words.

Ye Yunniang was stunned. She looked down at her stomach and reached out to touch it.

"Yunniang, give me a child."

"Yunniang, let's have a child that belongs to us."

"The treasure is all yours."

Jiang Mingzhe's words rang in my ears.

"Mother." Pan'er's voice interrupted Ye Yunniang's reverie.

"Mother." Pan'er ran into the house, holding a bamboo dragonfly in her hand and handed it to her. "Mother, let's play together."

Looking at Pan'er, Ye Yunniang suppressed the turmoil in her heart. She couldn't let Pan'er down again.

"Okay, let's play together." Ye Yunniang composed herself and played with Pan'er.

Cai Damei returned with the medicine, brewed it, and served it to Ye Yunniang.

Ye Yunniang took the medicine bowl and drank the bitter medicine in one gulp without hesitation.

Cai Damei took the bowl, walked out of the room, and let out a long sigh. She didn't want to do this, but she had no choice.

Inside the side room, Ye Yunniang bit her lip and wept.

She kept repeating to herself, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." In the end, she was selfish.

Half a month later, after some twists and turns, Ye Yunniang successfully weaned her baby.

Ye Yunniang and Cai Damei discussed what kind of business they could start.

"Mother, why don't we buy a shop? We can run our own business or rent it out, and we'll have income every month," Ye Yunniang suggested. She was a little worried about keeping the banknotes at home.

"Not now."

Ye Yunniang had just left the Jiang family when she took the money to buy a shop, not to tell others that she and her orphan mother were rich.

Ye Yunniang thought about it and realized that she had been a bit too hasty.

"Okay, let's not buy the shop. Then, what should we do?"

"It's hot now, it'll be too much of a hardship to go out and do chores. Let's wait until it cools down a bit." Cai Damei felt sorry for Ye Yunniang, who had lost a lot of weight since weaning. She thought she should help her recover before getting her to work.

"Big sister, are you home?" came a voice from outside the door.

Cai Damei got up and went out, opening the courtyard gate. "Sister Zhang, what brings you here? Come in and sit down."

"I won't sit down. Sister, I came to exchange some side dishes with you. My daughter is pregnant and wants to try some of your pickled vegetables." Granny Zhang held a bowl in one hand and a package of oil paper in the other.

"Qiaoya is pregnant, congratulations!" Cai Damei said, taking the bowl and going inside to scoop out a full bowl of side dishes.

"Take it over first and let her try it. See if she can eat it. If she can, there's plenty of side dishes at my house." Cai Damei handed the bowl to Granny Zhang.

"Alright, I won't stand on ceremony with you." Granny Zhang took the bowl and handed the oil paper package to Cai Damei.

"I made this dried meat this morning, try it and see how it tastes." Granny Zhang stuffed the oil paper package into Cai Damei's hand and turned to leave.

Cai Damei opened the oil paper package and found seven or eight pieces of dried meat inside.

The aroma of the spicy food is irresistible, making your mouth water.

"Yunniang, come and try the spicy jerky your Aunt Zhang makes."

Ye Yunniang picked up a piece; it smelled spicy but wasn't actually that spicy.

It's very chewy, and the more you eat, the more you want to eat.

"Mother, what does Aunt Zhang do?"

"Her family slaughters pigs and sells meat. Sometimes they can't sell all the meat, and they're afraid it will spoil if they leave it."

She was thinking of ways to make food. Her specialty was this spicy dried meat. "As Cai Damei said this, she told Ye Yunniang about the residents of Wanxia Lane.

Evening Glow Alley isn't very big, with seven or eight courtyards in a row. The Li family's courtyard is number four in the middle.

The No. 3 courtyard on the left is vacant year-round.

The couple living in courtyard number five on the right are Mr. and Mrs. Xu, and their son, Xu Damai, who is already married.

The woman, Liang Maimiao, gave birth to two sons and a daughter, named Xu Dalei, Xu Erlei, and the newborn Xu Sanmiao.

Erlei and Pan'er are about the same age and get along very well.

Liang Maimiao has a good personality and welcomes Pan'er to her house.

Sometimes when Cai Damei is too busy, she will send Pan'er next door to Liang Maimiao for help in looking after her.

The Xu family set up a noodle stall on the street in front of the alley.

Next to the Xu family's house is courtyard number six, which belongs to Granny Zhang's family.

Granny Zhang's husband died early, and she raised her three sons and one daughter on her own.

The three sons are named Zhang Da, Zhang Er, and Zhang San, and all are married with children. The sons, daughters-in-law, and grandsons are all very filial to Granny Zhang.
