18 · Chapter 18
Messiah didn't reply, but simply calmly observed the patterns on the floor, as if they were something very interesting.
"Messiah?"
Superman frowned at the silent Messiah, "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing." Messiah said calmly.
Superman looked unhappy, and Messiah's attitude only strengthened his resolve. Without even asking Messiah's opinion, he said arbitrarily, "You will do it."
"You're going with Shazam on this mission."
The Supreme Leader tapped the communicator on the desk and pushed the headset communicator in front of Messiah: "Take this, Cyborg will provide logistical assistance to you."
Messiah said nothing, just glanced at Superman calmly, then turned and left.
"Messiah……"
In the corridor, Shazam, who had been waiting for a long time, said anxiously: "Just the two of us...?"
"Um."
Messiah said simply, "Let's go."
"Should we really attack Bat? He's Batman..." Shazam hesitated, "Batman isn't that big..."
"Shhh."
Messiah Chan's golden eyes were like cold metal: "Someone is listening."
The atmosphere instantly became extremely depressing.
Shazam closed his mouth at a loss. Compared to the majestic Captain Marvel, he now looked more like a teenager.
"Yes..." Shazam stopped talking halfway through, "Is it him?"
After realizing the name Shazam wanted to say, Messiah looked at Shazam in surprise, not understanding why he misunderstood it as Superman.
He also thought that the regime believed in Superman.
Messiah shook his head and called out the name nonchalantly, "Not Superman."
Shazam's communicator appeared in Messiah's hand at some point, and Messiah tapped the communicator and said casually, "Are you listening, Cyborg."
The communicator was very quiet, as if it were just a decoration.
Messiah tilted his head, casually threw the communicator back into Shazam's arms, and directly modified the spatial coordinates to head to the mission location, leaving Shazam behind who was hesitant to speak.
--London
According to intelligence held by the regime, Batman is currently seeking cooperation from wizards in London, hoping to use magic to defeat Superman and liberate the Earth from regime rule.
Superman's mission is to have Messiah and Shazam kill those wizards and then capture Batman. On the premise of completing the mission, the rebels will kill as many as they can and try not to leave any alive.
Messiah casually glanced at the streets of London twice, without much desire to explore, and simply put his hands in his pockets and merged into the crowd of London.
All that curiosity and thirst for knowledge had disappeared long ago without him noticing, and Messiah just felt bored.
Messiah opened his ears and began to listen to the sounds all over London. He needed to find the hiding place of Batman and the Master. This was the only way he could think of to find them.
——This method is inspired by Superman. In the past, Superman would capture the voices of "Superman, help" all over the world to save people. Now the supreme leader would capture the voices of criminals and rebels all over the world to kill people.
"I hate fish and chips, damn the Brits, I want to go back to France."
"The government's latest announcement prohibits all alcohol use, including medical alcohol, except in hospitals."
"I heard that the antique bookstore around the corner is closing."
"Batman's Resistance..." "Shh, you're asking for death! If anyone hears you, you're dead."
"When will that Constantine guy pay me back!"
Messiah searched for information from thousands of unfamiliar voices and quickly found the address he wanted, but he didn't plan to go there immediately.
He had little interest in completing the mission of the Supreme Leader. It was just mechanical, repetitive and boring killing. It was dull and boring and he had no interest at all. It would be more interesting to continue observing the Supreme Leader.
The Messiah is still with the Supreme Leader now, just for the question that interests him, and only the Supreme Leader can answer that question for him.
"Here I come, Messiah."
A voice sounded behind Messiah, and Shazam, wearing a hood, fell from the sky, his mood obviously much lower than before.
After Shazam's iconic costume appeared, the pedestrians on the roadside changed their expressions. They recognized the Messiah and Shazam as members of the regime, and they all lowered their heads and scattered away.
After seeing the pedestrians who were trying to avoid him, Shazam's expression became even more depressed. His hood covered most of his expression, but the air of frustration could not be concealed.
"Messiah."
Shazam whispered, "I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Messiah tilted his head. "This isn't your fault."
Shazam's throat twitched a few times: "I really..."
"We should go."
Messiah interrupted Shazam, he looked away with some boredom, and quickly lost interest in what was happening to Shazam.
He thought he could find the answer in Shazam, but it seems he was overthinking it.
Maybe Shazam and Superman were similar in the past, but Shazam and the Supreme Leader are nothing alike now.
Shazam didn't say anything in the end. He followed Messiah silently, his huge body almost shrinking in the shadow of the hooded cloak, looking like a big, aggrieved dog.
"There is a very powerful aura approaching."
In a resistance base somewhere in London, Zatanna's expression suddenly became serious.
- Zatanna, one of the most powerful wizards on Earth, friend of Batman, and master of the magic of irony.
Batman frowned slightly and said in a deep voice: "Is it someone from the regime?"
"I'm not sure. I can't tell where this aura's power comes from." Zatanna took a deep breath. "It's familiar, but it seems different."
Constantine also sensed this aura, and his expression instantly turned pale.
- Constantine, one of the most powerful wizards on Earth, Hellblazer, and Zatanna's friend.
"Damn it," Constantine cursed. "I should have known this would happen."
No one present was more familiar with this aura than Constantine. He didn't expect that Batman would actually provoke such a guy.
"I don't want to play anymore. If you want to die, die by yourselves."
Constantine said without any sympathy: "If that guy catches up with me, I will say you forced me. You owe me this, Bat."
Batman quickly called up the surveillance footage in the London area and quickly locked onto the target.
The white-blonde boy and the man in red with a white hood were only two streets away from them, and were now moving towards them with a clear goal.
"Messiah, Shazam."
Batman read out the names of the two men and frowned, "Why them?"
Why would Superman send both of them against him?
If Batman were asked to make a list of the people in the regime who are most easily subverted and whose loyalty Superman is most suspicious of, Messiah, Shazam and the Flash would all be on the list. He couldn't think of any reason why Superman would let Messiah and Shazam walk into the tiger's mouth.
Messiah looked up as if he realized something, and he heard Batman's voice. Batman already knew he was coming.
The sound of the rebels withdrawing reached his ears, but Messiah seemed not to hear it and had no intention of reminding Shazam and Cyborg at all.
"Stop looking, we should go."
"Of course I know, but I, I..."
The sound of conversation reached Messiah's ears, and Messiah turned back inexplicably. He seemed to feel a breath that made him feel close.
After meeting Messiah's gaze, the round-faced man in the white suit stopped talking. The red-haired man in sunglasses standing next to him shrugged and showed an expression of "as expected".
The red-haired man in sunglasses—Demon Crowley—raised an eyebrow and said, "I said leave quickly."
The round-faced angel in a white suit, Aziraphale, glared at Crowley, then awkwardly greeted the Messiah: "Hi... I mean, hello, Messiah."
"You know me." Messiah said firmly.
Aziraphale's voice stuttered, his eyes wandering as he said, "How, how is that possible? I just..."
"We saw you on the news. You performed flawlessly," Crowley continued, taking over from Aziraphale. "Putting an underwater kingdom in the desert would be enough to make even demons blush."
Aziraphale's smile froze on his face, and he glared at Crowley again, then quickly turned it into a smile as he turned his face towards Messiah.
"I suddenly remembered that my bookstore door is not locked. Let's go first."
Aziraphale said as he pulled Crowley backwards. Crowley shrugged noncommittally but didn't derail the situation.
"If we're destined to meet, we'll see each other next time... later."
After leaving behind these words, Aziraphale dragged Crowley away as if fleeing, fearing that Messiah would call him back and force him to find out what was going on.
Messiah stared at the direction Aziraphale and Crowley had left, a hint of confusion in his eyes.
Why did he have no impression of them, but felt that the aura of the man in the white suit was very familiar?
The man in the white suit gave him a feeling similar to the one the "game system" gave him at that time, but the "game system" made him feel closer and more trustworthy.
"Angels and demons?"
Shazam looked at the two men's retreating backs in confusion and muttered, "This is the first time I see angels and demons mixed together. Bat shouldn't ask them for help...right?"
As he spoke, Shazam's tone became more and more hesitant, as if this was indeed something Batman could do.
"No." Messiah looked away and shook his head, "It's a wizard."
Shazam quickly understood what Messiah meant. The one with Batman was the wizard, not angels and demons.
The two of them walked towards the base where Batman was hiding again.
Messiah calmly let go of his listening skills, focusing his attention on the angel and demon walking away.
"Hurry up, hurry up, it will be too late if you don't leave now."
"Should I not have greeted Him?"
"This place will soon be destroyed, and it will be impossible to observe or record. As long as you don't reveal anything, it will remain a secret."
"But... it's almighty."
Messiah heard the angel mumble a word, and his intuition told Messiah what the word was that was very important to him, but he suddenly could not hear the voices of the angel and the demon.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't find the angel or the demon, as if they didn't exist in this world.
Messiah subconsciously looked in the direction where the angel and the demon left. Only a few spatial fluctuations remained there, which was the only trace that could prove the existence of the angel and the demon.
"Gone..."
Messiah felt lost, as if he had missed something very important.
"Xiao Zha, you guys go first."
Batman looked at the figures of Messiah and Shazam on the screen and said immediately, "This is an opportunity. I need to talk to them."
"Crazy, I knew you were crazy."
Constantine extinguished the cigarette in his hand and turned away without hesitation: "Xiao Zha, stop looking, let's go. Leave this guy alone, he won't give up."
Zatanna frowned slightly: "Bruce, you can't stay. Superman won't let you go."
"Maybe they are just bait targeting you."
The Oracle's calm voice came from the microphone: "We can't lose anyone else, especially you, Bruce."
Batman responded with silence.
There was a sudden regular knock on the door, and the stronghold fell silent in an instant.
Boom, boom, boom.
"Hello, Batman."
Messiah stood at the entrance to the cellar and politely tapped the floorboards. "I'm coming in."
Constantine smelled the breath that made his teeth ache, and decisively raised his middle finger to Batman, pulled Zatanna and turned away.
"Brother Tan will be here to take us there."
"Call me if you need me." Zatanna leaned half of her body out of her magic hat and told Batman, "I will come to rescue you immediately."
Batman didn't reply.
Under the effect of Zatanna's ironic magic, all the members of the resistance in the cellar were moved away, leaving only Batman standing silently in the dark.
Messiah sensed the spatial fluctuations in the cellar and heard the conversation between Batman and Zatanna, but he chose to pretend not to hear them.
During the period after Atlantis "reconciled" with the regime, Messiah mastered the skill of slacking off and tried to take advantage of the situation whenever possible.
He just wants to find the answer from Superman, not to work for the regime.
Shazam also felt the magical fluctuations, but he also chose to remain silent and even breathed a sigh of relief.
It's great that Batman can escape immediately. Shazam thought, he really doesn't want to attack Batman.
"We're coming in."
Messiah politely informed Batman before opening the cellar door and jumping in with Shazam.
In the cellar, Batman, standing in the shadows, met their gaze.
"Messiah, Shazam."
Batman called out their names in a hoarse voice: "Superman sent you here."
"What did he send you here for? To massacre the rebels and then kill me?"
Batman said almost sarcastically: "Besides killing, I can't think of anything else Superman can do."
"That's not the case." Shazam subconsciously defended Superman, "Superman is trying to protect the Earth. He doesn't want to kill you, nor has he been killing you..."
At the end of the story, Shazam was actually a little unable to continue. Thinking back on Superman's actions during this period, he couldn't convince himself.
Messiah tilted his head. "Convince us?"
Batman nodded happily: "Yes, I want to convince you."
"No," Messiah said calmly, "You are different."
You are not like Superman. You don't have what I want, so you can't convince me.
Although Shazam didn't understand what Messiah meant, he could tell that Messiah was rejecting Batman, so he nodded and said, "Yes, there is no way we can join you."
"B, perhaps you have a misunderstanding about the regime. We are protecting the world, not what you imagine..."
"You misunderstood." Batman interrupted Shazam directly.
This was the umpteenth time Shazam was interrupted today, but he just sighed good-naturedly and said nothing.
Until Batman's next words shattered Shazam's worldview.
"Did you know that Superman massacred over two hundred civilians?" Batman looked gravely at Messiah and Shazam, "A group of civilians in the truest sense of the word."
