9 · Chapter 9
Superman didn't expect that he would see Lex again, nor did he expect to see the Messiah here.
In his vision, the Messiah was supposed to be in the Fortress of Solitude, safely protected.
Superman looked at the Messiah who had gone off track. His surging desire for control made him want to question Messiah, asking why he couldn't understand his painstaking efforts, why he left the Fortress of Solitude without permission, and whether Batman had seduced him.
But the excitement that Lex was still alive diluted the haze in Superman's heart. Superman calmed down temporarily and prepared to go back to the Fortress of Solitude together.
"let's go."
Superman took the confused Lex into the sky. The destruction of Metropolis occupied Lex's mind, making one of the smartest people on earth unaware that something was wrong with Superman.
Messiah looked at Superman silently, and did not choose to change his own spatial coordinates. Instead, he flew up with him. The question just now kept lingering in Messiah's mind.
He wondered, Superman... was he really human?
Messiah looked at the God of Man who was quickly breaking through the white clouds in front of him, his red cloak passing through the gray ruins of the metropolis, and suddenly realized that whether Superman's race was human or not, it seemed that to him... it was not that important.
Although the game system says he is a human, Messiah often feels that he is incompatible with humans.
He believed that the game system did not deceive him, but how should one define human beings?
Compared to him, Superman...the former Superman was more like a human, and the current Superman still has a human side.
If one's race is human, does that make him human? If one has a human heart, does that make him human?
He didn't know the answer to this question and was eager to find the answer.
——Finding the answer to “how to define human beings” may be what the game system means by “knowing yourself”.
The Messiah follows Superman down into the Arctic ice and snow.
The door of the Fortress of Solitude slowly opened. Superman didn't seem to care whether Messiah would follow or not. He took the lead and walked into the Fortress of Solitude with Lex, leaving Messiah with only his back.
Messiah stared at Superman's back quietly and blinked slowly.
After a few seconds, Messiah caught up, and Superman stopped listening with satisfaction when he heard the squeaking sound of footsteps on the snow getting closer.
Messiah decided to continue observing Superman and follow him as he did before to verify his ideas.
Superman is the most referenceable object of observation and the existence most likely to allow him to find the "definition of humanity".
The game panel is triggered again at the right time:
[Main Mission: Observe Superman]
[The God of the World has a human heart. You used to think that Superman was human, but after that human heart began to break, you began to doubt it and questioned the definition of human beings.
Observing Superman seems to help you find the answer. Do you want to continue observing Superman?
The Messiah chose to accept the mission.
Not only for answers to human definitions, but also to satisfy his curiosity.
——Perhaps it was because Superman was the first person...creature Messiah met after waking up, or perhaps it was because Superman was the first being to bring "curiosity" and "thirst for knowledge" to Messiah, so Messiah was curious about everything about Superman.
He was really curious about what Superman would become, and what Superman would do next. Would he continue to break other rules that had been taught to him, just like he broke the principle of not killing?
Lex was examining a body in the Kryptonian medical cabin when the projection of Jor-El's AI appeared. He looked worriedly at Superman and the Messiah who was following silently behind Superman.
"Kal," Jor-El called. "I was the one who let the kid out."
"Why?" Superman looked at Jor-El AI. Although he had suspected from the beginning that Jor-El AI had opened the door to the Fortress of Solitude for Messiah, he didn't expect it to be true. "You know how dangerous it is out there. We can't leave Messiah alone to face danger."
Jor-El looked at Superman with sad eyes: "Carl, you are too scared. Don't let fear control you and turn you into another person."
"You can't try to fit everything into a crystal ball. The Messiah belongs to himself, and all the people of the Earth belong to themselves. They should have the right to decide their own future."
——Before rushing to the ruins of Lex Tower, Superman had just finished a global live speech. He revealed his true identity to the public - Clark Kent, and announced something.
"The Justice League will abolish all war and crime. Acts that harm civilians and take lives must cease immediately. If necessary, we will use force to maintain peace."
"Whether it's the politicians who ordered the war or the criminals who committed murder and robbery, all evildoers will be punished, and Earth will achieve eternal peace under the protection of the Justice League."
"All evil will end and a new era will begin."
Jor-El knew that his son was a little out of control, but he didn't expect that Carl actually wanted to lock the earth in a crystal ball.
He knew that Carl's actions were all well-intentioned and he believed from the bottom of his heart that they were good for the people, just like he believed that imprisoning the Messiah in the Fortress of Solitude was to protect the Messiah.
But this is wrong.
Superman's gaze retreated when it met Jor-El's sad eyes. He wanted to tell Jor-El his painstaking efforts, but the remaining humanity in his heart reminded him of his mistakes.
Messiah saw the hesitation in Superman's eyes.
"It's not him." Messiah organized his speech. He stopped stumbling and told Superman the truth in the simplest language possible. "I'll go out and test my abilities myself."
"Oh yeah, abilities." Superman appeared dazed, his aura gradually softening. He gave Messiah a soothing smile, in which one could vaguely see traces of his former son of tomorrow. "I'm sorry, Messiah, I shouldn't have lost my temper with you."
"I'm just... too scared. I'll do my best to correct it and give you more freedom."
Superman raised his hand and gently ruffled Messiah's hair, his strength softer than touching a feather. He said gently, "Have you tested what your ability is? Do you need my help?"
Messiah looked into Superman's gentle blue eyes, and now, Superman seemed human to him again.
"Reality modification," Messiah said casually, unaware of the extraordinary power he had expressed. "But there are limits."
Superman was surprised and said, "Modify reality?"
He thought that the Messiah was a physical mutation, although he had also encountered many people with special abilities so powerful that they could even destroy the world, and he himself was one of them.
But the ability to modify reality... for a pure-blooded human—without magic or any other special bloodline—is still too extraordinary.
This goes to something deeper.
"Yeah." Messiah nodded slowly. He pointed to a puddle on the ground. It was formed by the melted snow Messiah had brought into the Fortress of Solitude from outside. "Like this."
Messiah snapped his fingers nonchalantly.
——This was one of the things he had learned from the Internet. Making this move when using his ability would make him feel good, as if his heart was light.
——Messiah didn’t know that this was an inherent characteristic of human teenagers of his age. In short, he loved to act cool.
The puddle of water reverted to a small wisp of white snow, then gradually grew into a larger mass of snow. The snow twisted for a moment, transforming into a blazing flame. The flame gradually solidified and became a rock.
On this rock, time seemed to pass faster, and the rock began to weather. It took only a few seconds for tiny cracks to appear and for it to turn into gravel.
Messiah snapped his fingers again, and the sand disappeared completely as if it had never appeared.
The changes only manifested on small objects, making the Messiah's abilities seem less threatening, but Superman knew otherwise.
After watching Messiah demonstrate his abilities, Superman smiled with satisfaction: "Is this how you acquired the ability to fly?"
Messiah nodded.
Superman's face was filled with pure joy: "Great, now that you have enough ability to protect yourself, I feel relieved."
"I'm sorry, Messiah." Superman apologized to Messiah sincerely again, "I'm sorry for doing this to you before... I will give you back your freedom. You have the right to make your own choice."
Joe-El watched this scene with loving eyes. Everything was getting better. Perhaps he could see the day when his son would wake up completely.
Messiah blinked slowly. Although he still couldn't understand why Superman apologized, he had a vague feeling about it.
So, Superman will not abandon the principle of not forcing others, just as he abandoned the principle of not killing?
Messiah looked at Superman with clear eyes. Seeing Superman's gentle and guilty expression, he remembered the Superman who once gently told him, "No one can force you to do anything, not even me."
Are you coming back?
Messiah nodded slowly and said softly, "Okay."
Superman's smile became even brighter. He wanted to say something more to the Messiah when he heard the sound of the Kryptonian medical bay opening and Lex walked out of the Kryptonian medical bay.
Superman looked at Lex, who was also smiling, with sparkling eyes, and said in a light and hopeful voice: "Lex!"
He pulled Messiah towards Lex and introduced Messiah to Lex with a dance of joy.
Jor-El's AI projection turned off, and he thought that Carl would be cured with the help of his friends.
Everything is getting better, that's great.
However, at this moment, the harsh communicator prompt tone "ding-ling-ling" rang.
Superman's face turned serious. He temporarily ended his conversation with Lex and Messiah and took out the Justice League's internal communicator.
The communicator was connected, and Wonder Woman's anxious voice came from it.
"Clark, where are you?!"
"The government has sent people to capture Jonathan and Martha, and they are threatening to kill them if you don't stop!"
Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent are Superman's adoptive human parents. They adopted the baby Kal-El they found in a spaceship, named him Clark Kent, raised him, and witnessed him become the world-renowned Superman.
And an hour ago, Superman announced to the world that he was Clark Kent.
Superman crushed the communicator in anger and growled, "How dare they!"
"Messiah, I need you."
"Let's go."
Superman walked out quickly, his red cape billowing behind him. He said word by word, "Go rescue Jonathan and Martha, and make those people pay the price."
Everything took a turn for the worse.
