Two o'clock in the morning.
The phone on the table suddenly vibrated. Tang Yue glanced at the caller ID on the screen, then casually lowered his head to review the documents again.
The phone rang for a while before automatically hanging up, followed by a barrage of text messages. Tang Yue frowned slightly, and just as he picked up his phone, the persistent call came in again. He had no choice but to put down his documents, lean back in his chair, rub his temples, and press the answer button.
"Brother Yue, is Wanwan with you now?" Meng Shen's anxious voice came through the phone receiver, "It's already 2:13 AM, are you...spending the night out?"
There was another heavy breathing sound on the other end of the phone, clearly not just from Meng Shen, but most likely from his father-in-law.
"Wanwan isn't with me." Tang Yue's brows furrowed tightly. No unusual messages had come from security, meaning Yu Wan was safe. He sat up straight and started checking Yu Wan's iPhone location. It showed she was downstairs?!
"Don't worry, I'll find her. Wait for my call."
Tang Yue hung up the call, got up, closed the file, grabbed his coat from the sofa, and hurried downstairs.
The streets were deserted at two in the morning, the lights were dim.
Tang Yue walked around the building and finally found Yu Wan under one of the circular flower beds.
The little girl sat cross-legged on the ground, motionless, staring blankly into the distance, her face pale from the cold.
He tiptoed over to her and sat down beside her, then reached out and wrapped the corner of his coat around her shoulders, pulling her into his arms. "Have you been waiting long?"
Yu Wan scoffed, "Don't flatter me. I didn't come here specifically to find you. I was just taking a walk after dinner to digest and happened to end up here."
Tang Yue pursed his lips, staring intently into her eyes, unable to detect anything amiss. The calmer the girl remained, the more abnormal it seemed. It must have taken at least three or four hours to walk from the Yu family villa to here; something must have happened.
He was hesitating about how to ask when the other person bumped his arm.
"Let's go home and have some crayfish." Yu Wan broke free from his embrace, stood up, put her hands in her pockets, and looked down at him condescendingly. "It's not too much to treat us to celebrate your upcoming job, is it?"
Tang Yue said with distress, "But I rejected him."
This answer was expected; Ausen's offer probably wouldn't be low. But the thought of Tang Yue working for someone else felt strangely unsettling. No matter how powerful Ausen was, it wasn't as good as her family's company.
"Well done." Yu Wan raised her chin. "If you like, we can acquire it someday when we make money, and you can be the CEO anytime you want."
Tang Yue was both amused and exasperated: "Then... thank you, my patron."
-
Inside the villa, the hall was brightly lit and unusually quiet.
Meng Shen and Zhou Fei placed their hands on their knees, their backs straight, looking incredibly obedient.
On the other sofa, Yu Jianguo was restless, glancing at his watch and then at his phone, his finger hovering over his daughter's number, wanting to dial but hesitant to do so.
Actually, not long after Yu Wan left, he received a call from Uncle Liu. He learned that Yu Wan had actually come to the company, right around the time he was talking to Fang Qiong. Hoping for the best, he checked the security footage and saw Yu Wan standing outside the door; his heart skipped a beat. After that, no matter how many times he dialed her number, it was always busy.
Yu Jianguo panicked and drove all the way from the company here. He hadn't expected that he couldn't contact Meng Shen either, and now he was relying on Tang Yue to bring back good news.
Thinking of this, he glared at Meng Shen a few times with dissatisfaction, saying that she was Wanwan's best friend, but she was useless at the crucial moment. Their friendship was just a facade.
Meng Shen felt like crying but had no tears. His lips moved in grievance, but he didn't dare to utter a single word of rebuttal.
Zhou Fei, on the other hand, had experienced firsthand the formidable nature of this cold-faced elder. Back when he was still a petty hoodlum, the elder had almost thrown him into the sea to feed the fish, believing he had corrupted Yu Wan. The mere thought of that scene made his legs tremble.
The two young men exchanged a glance, and both saw mutual respect and sympathy in each other's eyes.
Just then, the door lock suddenly turned a few times and opened.
The three people sitting on the sofa suddenly stood up and looked over at the same time.
Yu Wan was startled.
Seeing Yu Jianguo's anxious expression, and then looking at Meng Shen and Zhou Fei's overjoyed expressions as if they had met a savior, she already knew the answer in her heart.
"Want to eat crayfish together?" Yu Wan smiled, holding up the bag she was carrying.
Meng Shen smacked his lips. "Do you have my favorite salted egg yolk flavor?"
Yu Wan nodded, "Tang Yue also brought back some kebabs, go and help him carry them in."
Meng Shen: "I'll go."
Zhou Fei: "I'm going."
The two exchanged a glance and tacitly dashed out, leaving only the Yu father and daughter in the living room.
"Wanwan, I...you..." Yu Jianguo was so nervous that his hands were sweating. He was completely different from his previous assertive self. He was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, not knowing how to express himself.
Seeing him like this, Yu Wan felt the knot in her heart inexplicably disappear. She tilted her head slightly and asked with a smile, "Old man, have you had dinner yet?"
Yu Jianguo shook his head, feeling increasingly guilty.
Yu Wan frowned slightly and said disapprovingly, "You have a stomach problem, you must eat on time." She walked over, put the food box on the coffee table, picked up her phone, and ordered a mushroom and chicken congee.
"Sigh." Yu Jianguo nodded repeatedly, trying to appease her, "I'll definitely remember next time. Daughter, don't be angry." He carefully observed her expression, swallowed, and continued, "Dad is getting old. You're the only family I have in this life, and that will never change."
