Chapter 9 Human Heart
Lin Qiushi had heard screams before, but tonight's screams seemed different. Along with the screams, there was the sound of heavy objects falling to the ground and angry curses. He could even hear someone running hurriedly in the corridor, crying out for help.
"Help - help - someone wants to kill me, help -" The voice seemed slightly familiar. Lin Qiushi was sure it came from a girl in the team. She was roaring at the top of her lungs, as if she had used up all her strength.
Lin Qiushi couldn't be sure whether the sound was real or just his own illusion. His breathing became a little disordered because the screams were getting closer and closer to him.
"Help!" The person seeking help seemed to be on the second floor. She ran in the corridor, banging on every door in the corridor. "Someone wants to kill me, help, please open the door! Please open the door!"
There was no sound of the door opening. Everyone seemed to have fallen into a deep sleep and could not hear the shrill cry for help at all.
Lin Qiushi lay in bed without moving until the person calling for help arrived at his door.
“Help, help!” the girl cried, banging on the door. “Please open the door! He’s crazy! He wants to kill me! Please, please—I don’t want to die! Please save me!”
Lin Qiushi slowly sat up from the bed, but he did not move. He silently pondered whether he should open the door.
Ruan Baijie, who should have been sleeping beside him, whispered, "Do you want to save her?"
Lin Qiushi asked, "Can I save him?"
Ruan Baijie blinked and after a while, she said, "If you want."
Lin Qiushi felt that the voice outside was most likely a person's. Seeing that Ruan Baijie had no intention of stopping him, he quickly stood up and walked to the door. He gritted his teeth and pulled the door lock.
When he opened the door, the scene outside startled him. The girl who had been shouting for help was covered in blood. Her arm seemed injured, and she was crying while covering it with her other hand. When she saw Lin Qiushi open the door, she rushed over like a madman: "Help! Help me!"
Lin Qiushi asked, "What happened?"
"He wants to kill me—" the girl cried, "He wants to kill me!!"
Lin Qiushi took a step back and let her enter the house first: "Who wants to kill you?"
The girl said: "Cheng Wen!!"
Lin Qiushi had a vague impression of this name; it seemed to be a man from the group. He was about to ask more when he heard the banging of a door coming from the stairs. There was a shabby wooden door between the first and second floors, usually closed when everyone slept. It was probably this door that saved the girl's life.
Lin Qiushi motioned for her to come in and then locked the door.
The girl was sobbing and shaking all over, looking very scared.
There was a clang outside the door; the wooden door connecting the first floor to the second finally gave way under the force of the attack. Soon, hurried footsteps could be heard in the corridor outside. The man the girl had mentioned as Cheng Wen was clearly looking for her. Cheng Wen asked, "Where did you go? Hurry and hand over Wang Xiaoyi! Don't let her in!"
Wang Xiaoyi sobbed softly out of fear.
Ruan Baijie also got out of bed. Faced with such a situation, she was not in a hurry at all and was still slowly tidying up her hair.
Cheng Wen stopped outside Lin Qiushi's house. The bloodstains in the corridor ended at Lin Qiushi's door. The trace was too obvious, allowing him to find Wang Xiaoyi's location immediately.
"Open the door! Lin Qiushi!!!" Cheng Wen yelled, "Is Wang Xiaoyi in your room?!"
Lin Qiushi said nothing.
Ruan Baijie said delicately: "What are you doing so late at night?"
Cheng Wen said, "Hand her over quickly—she's not human! Don't be fooled by her!"
Lin Qiushi: "What do you mean?"
Cheng Wen seemed very irritated, full of impatience and cruelty: "She is really not a human being, believe me -"
Wang Xiaoyi cried out when she heard this: "You are not a human being, Cheng Wen. You actually want to use this excuse to kill me? Do you think that if you kill me, you can live?"
When Cheng Wen heard this, his tone suddenly became ferocious. He said, "Wang Xiaoyi, stop pretending. You are the monster hiding among us. I have discovered your secret!! Get out here!!" As he spoke, he began to bang on the door heavily, as if he would not give up.
The door was already rather worn, and even with the strength of an adult man, if he was determined to break it open, he probably wouldn't be able to hold out for long. Lin Qiushi stood by the door and cursed, "If you kill Wang Xiaoyi, even if you get out alive, you'll still be a murderer!"
Cheng Wen said, "Lin Qiushi, stop meddling in other people's business!"
Lin Qiushi said, "I'm going to take care of this today. If you have the guts, come in and I'll kill you." He was so angry at the man outside that he rolled up his sleeves and, panting heavily, began to look for tools to fight back in the house.
Cheng Wen also sensed Lin Qiushi's anger and paused his banging on the door. Finally, he said in a hoarse voice, "Lin Qiushi, I'll be the bad guy today. You get her out. As long as someone dies, we can go back."
Lin Qiushi: "You're dreaming."
Cheng Wen: “You——”
Lin Qiushi said, "Go away. I won't let you kill her."
It was quiet outside for a while before they could actually hear footsteps leaving. Lin Qiushi hadn't expected Cheng Wen to give up so easily. He was stunned for a moment before saying to Wang Xiaoyi, "He's gone."
Wang Xiaoyi started sobbing again.
For most of the night, none of the three people in the room slept. While Lin Qiushi treated Wang Xiaoyi's wound, Ruan Baijie sat by the window, staring out in silence.
Lin Qiushi asked her what she was looking at, and Ruan Baijie said, "I'm looking at the well outside."
"What's so good about this?" Lin Qiushi didn't have a good impression of the well.
Ruan Baijie said gently: "It's good to take a few more glances. Maybe I will end up in the well too."
Lin Qiushi said, "I won't let you go into the well." He slowly wiped the blood off the floor and said seriously, "Even if you have to go, I'll go first."
Ruan Baijie laughed and finally said, "You are a very interesting person."
Wang Xiaoyi still survived. Although his right hand was injured, it was a blessing in disguise that he was able to keep his life.
Lin Qiushi originally thought that Cheng Wen would not show up the next day out of guilt, but who would have thought that in the morning he would sit in the lobby on the first floor and eat breakfast as if nothing had happened.
When Wang Xiaoyi saw him, she hid behind Lin Qiushi and almost burst into tears again.
Lin Qiushi said coldly, "Cheng Wen, you still have the nerve to show up?"
Cheng Wen glanced at Lin Qiushi indifferently: "Why can't you show up?"
"You actually wanted to kill Wang Xiaoyi." Lin Qiushi couldn't understand his self-righteousness. "She's a living person!"
Cheng Wen sneered and stopped talking.
When the other people in the team heard the conversation between the two, some looked at Cheng Wen with disgust, while others had numb eyes and were completely indifferent, as if killing a teammate was a trivial matter.
Xiong Qi also seemed a little unhappy. He said, "If you are so capable, go kill ghosts instead of hitting your own teammates."
Cheng Wen stuffed something in his mouth and didn't respond at all. Lin Qiushi, fearing he might suddenly explode, observed him cautiously. He had a feeling something was amiss with Cheng Wen, but he couldn't quite place the cause.
After dinner, he and Ruan Baijie returned to the house. Ruan Baijie suddenly asked, "Do you think the ghost will kill people again in the next three days?"
"What do you mean?" Lin Qiushi was stunned.
"That thing is obviously intelligent," Ruan Baijie said. "If I were her, I wouldn't kill anyone for the next three days."
