Rebirth

Rebirth

"It's raining so hard, why don't you go back tomorrow?"

Han Ming looked towards the rain.

"Yes, Boss. I saw in the weather forecast that the rain won't stop until tomorrow. You'd better not rush back." Lu Yuyao sorted out the documents on the table. "Or you can wait until the rain stops."

Chen An stood at the door. The rain had been falling since six o'clock and had been falling for two hours. It showed no sign of stopping, not even slowing down. For some reason, the more it rained, the more anxious he became. He rarely felt anxious, but once was when Jiang Li nearly perished in the fire, and once was now.

He called Jiang Li, but no one answered.

Jiang Li couldn't go to bed so early. He was afraid that something might happen to Jiang Li, so he had to leave even if the rain didn't stop.

"Lend me your umbrella, I'll return it to you tomorrow!" Chen An took Han Ming's umbrella, opened it, and rushed into the rain at a rapid speed.

"Oh!" Han Ming couldn't call back the stubborn person and could only sigh.

It was a rainy day and there was some traffic jam. The rain blurred people's vision, and people who were usually cautious drove fast.

"Jiang Li!"

When he opened the door, the room was pitch black. The moment he turned on the light, the only responses he got were the startled Guazi and the lightning outside the window.

He went straight to Jiang Li's room, turned the handle and found that the door was locked. He knocked on the door hard and called the name of the person inside.

"Jiang Li, open the door!"

No sound.

Chen An was anxious, "If you don't open the door, I'll pick the lock!"

After a while, he heard very light footsteps, sometimes deep and sometimes shallow.

The other person turned the handle. There was no light in the room. Jiang Li's pale face appeared in front of him. The other person said weakly, "What?"

"Why don't you answer the phone?" Chen An went to turn on the light.

"I was sleeping."

The moment the lights came on, Jiang Li raised his hand to shield his eyes, and then a warm hand touched his forehead, "You have a fever!"

Jiang Li's condition once again proved that Chen An's intuition was correct. It seemed that his intuition would not be wrong as long as he met Jiang Li.

Jiang Li took a step back to avoid him, his eyes dull, "Oh."

Then he turned and walked towards the bed, "Don't worry about it."

Of course he knew he had a fever, but he didn't want to care. Among all the things he had experienced, fever was just a minor problem. Let it burn if it wanted to, and it would go away naturally after it burned out.

Seeing his indifferent look, Chen An felt a surge of anger. His coat was still dripping with water after coming back from the rain, but the other party said it didn't matter.

He watched Jiang Li tuck himself into the quilt, close his eyes and continue to sleep. He endured it and turned around to take off his coat and look for medicine in the drawer.

Ten minutes later, he came in again with the medicine. There was a small table lamp at the head of Jiang Li's bed. Chen An bought it himself when he moved back. He remembered that the old detectives with children in the bureau all liked to buy this kind of table lamp, saying that it was eye-protecting and convenient, so for some reason, he bought one too.

The warm yellow light shone on Jiang Li's face. He frowned and clutched the quilt with both hands. He looked as if he had had a horrifying dream and looked extremely pitiful.

Chen An gently shook him awake, "Jiang Li, get up and take your medicine."

Jiang Li's eyelashes fluttered, and when he opened his eyes, he revealed a pair of tired eyes. He said in a hoarse voice, "Are you calling me?"

Chen An laughed, wondering if the fever had burned his brain out. "Who else should I call if not you?"

Jiang Li's brows were still furrowed, and his lips moved, as if he wanted to say something but stopped himself.

"Okay, get up and take the medicine. You won't feel uncomfortable after you take it."

The warm liquid was brought to him. Jiang Li stared at it for a while, then stood up and drank it all. He looked very obedient, but Chen An could see a hint of bitterness in his tired eyes.

His eyes were full of sadness tonight.

Could it be that he already knew about Jiang Qiuyi?

Chen An made a guess, but this guess was quickly denied.

He had no chance to know.

Jiang Li lay back down, staring blankly at the ceiling, like a soulless puppet, only able to blink but not speak or smile.

Jiang Li like this made him very worried.

He reached out and touched Jiang Li's hot cheek and asked, "What happened?"

Suddenly, a tear slipped from the corner of Jiang Li's eye and was caught by Chen An. He became more and more convinced that Jiang Li must have encountered something, and his voice became softer, "Why are you crying?"

"Crying?" Jiang Li said hoarsely. He raised his hand to touch the tears, then stared at them and smiled. After a moment, he replied, "I was dreaming."

Chen An said, "Are you scared?"

Jiang Li nodded in agreement, "Yeah, it was a terrible nightmare."

"I dreamed I was running in a dark forest under a heavy rain. The rain lashed my face, blurring my vision. Lightning flashed across the night sky, and I relied on the lightning to determine my direction. In the end, it led me to a cliff, a dead end. I stopped at the cliff, but the rain slipped and I fell."

"Dreams are all fake." Chen An touched his hair and comforted him, "There won't be a cliff. Your future will be smooth."

Jiang Li turned her head and looked at him with tearful eyes, "Really?"

"Of course it's true. So don't dwell on the bad things. They're in the past, a long time ago. You should move on."

Jiang Li blinked, and the tears hidden in his eyes were driven out, and he was filled with smiles again.

Chen An tucked the quilt for him and said, "Okay, go to bed early."

Jiang Li suddenly pulled him aside and asked a question, "Is it raining outside?"

"Um."

Jiang Li asked again: "Is it very big?"

Chen An hesitated for a moment, and before he could answer, the other party changed the subject and said, "I'm cold." As he spoke, he pretended to be pitiful and pulled at his sleeve.

He knew Jiang Li's intention and also knew that Jiang Li liked him.

He really wanted to help Jiang Li because he didn't want Jiang Li to live such a hard life. He had already gone to Qiu Shui Township to find him once. If they hadn't met in the hospital, his help would only appear in a place where Jiang Li couldn't see it.

But they still met.

When he brought him back, he had originally planned to keep a distance from Jiang Li, but this "plan" seemed to have no binding force. The other party didn't even need to beg him. As long as he softened his attitude, he would not find a reason to refuse.

"……never mind."

Jiang Li's hopeful eyes gradually dimmed, and the hand that was pulling his sleeve was withdrawn and placed carefully in the quilt, returning to being that soulless puppet.

He finally softened his heart.

The wet sweater inside was taken off, and the man lay down beside him in the cool breeze. Jiang Li burrowed deeper into the quilt, then was pulled up and pressed into someone's arms. The man spoke in a low voice, his chest vibrating as he uttered two words, "Sleep."

Jiang Li gave a triumphant smile under the quilt.

The warm yellow light was still on, and Jiang Li looked up just in time to see the other person's red ears. He was in a particularly good mood, so he plucked up the courage to touch them. However, before he could touch them, the other person dodged him, and then he received this kind of evaluation from Chen An.

"I've noticed you're the type who pushes for more."

Jiang Li smiled with a smug look on his face.

Chen An grabbed his exposed hand which was about to continue causing trouble, but he was frightened by the burn. He just wanted to stop him and rubbed the back of his hand twice.

"Next time you're sick, don't just lie there and sleep. There's some medicine in the drawer. I can get it myself when I'm not around. It's not a big deal."

"I never had a fever before."

The number of times Jiang Li had a fever could be counted on one hand.

"The past is the past." Chen An said seriously, "No one will never get sick. Remember to tell me if you are sick. Sleeping with your head covered is scary, and no one will answer the phone."

Jiang Li reached for his phone, opened it, and saw more than a dozen missed calls, all from Chen An. He said guiltily, "I was so soundly asleep I didn't hear it." Then he tossed the phone aside, grabbed the man's collar, and repeated, "Cold."

"Yeah, yeah." Chen An said perfunctorily, but his arms tightened again.

Jiang Li's cheek was pressed against Chen An's chest, his strong heartbeat was in her ears, and then she fell into a dream again.
