To be fair, Duncan was not an expert in the supernatural field, and he lacked knowledge of subjects related to dreams and the spiritual field, but he still vaguely judged that the scenery on this street should not be just what Shirley "saw in her dream."
Because those ashes whispering for help really gave him a strange sense of déjà vu——
He thought of the factory and the people inside it who were hidden behind the curtains and burned to ashes in the fire.
Of course, the ashes in the factory did not ask him for help - those ashes gave him a more direct and stronger signal: they allowed him to directly see the "echoes" of the fire eleven years ago.
Subconsciously, Duncan thought that the ashes on the street that appeared in Shirley's dream were related to the ashes in the factory.
He raised his head and looked around. In the swaying dim red light, the entire street showed the tragic scene after a fire. Amid the falling sparks and dust, there were countless piles of ashes and suspicious black shadows printed on the nearby walls.
"You were only six years old at the time. Even if you observed a lot in your subconscious, it should not be enough to support such a huge dream - and you have to create these embers calling for help and such a large area of phantom in the distance in the dream."
Duncan said softly, and his voice made Shirley, who was feeling a little nervous, suddenly feel more at ease.
Shirley raised her head and looked at Duncan standing next to her - the current "Mr. Duncan" was different from the one she usually saw. He appeared here as a gloomy and majestic captain. To be honest, he looked quite scary. Even without Agou's "real vision", she could feel a deep pressure from him.
But in this nightmare that was becoming increasingly unfamiliar to her, such a powerful existence could still give her some sense of security: at least now, this existence was on her side.
"Let's move forward and see how far the dream can extend."
Duncan's voice suddenly came from the side. Shirley was stunned for a moment, and quickly pulled Agou to catch up with the other party.
Amid the faint murmuring cries for help coming from countless piles of ashes, the two men and the dog walked through the streets covered with embers and sparks, gradually moving towards the twisted and swaying shadowy buildings.
They walked on the street for an unknown amount of time, and Duncan was carefully observing the changes in the nearby scenery along the way. What surprised him was that the scenery on the street remained the same as before.
There were no more distorted phantoms, nor did it become more blurry or bizarre, or the "dangerous dream creations" described by Agou appear.
Duncan suddenly stopped and frowned slightly.
"Mr. Duncan?" Shirley cast a curious look at him. "Have you discovered anything?"
"...How far have we gone from the 'origin'?" Duncan raised his head and looked back at the direction he and Shirley had come from. The house they had set out from had disappeared in the hazy red fog.
"'Origin'?" Shirley was stunned for a moment. "Oh, you mean the room I dreamed about? It should be... quite far away. I think it's at least half a block away."
"Shirley, something's not right." At this time, Agou suddenly reacted. He looked at the fog around him nervously and said in a low voice, "Let's stop for a while."
Shirley hadn't reacted yet. She looked confused: "What's wrong?"
"The dream is 'centered' on the subconscious cognitive basis of the dreamer. Your cognitive basis in this dream is that room, and all your memories and emotions are also in that room," Agou explained quickly, "The areas outside the room are all 'deductions and supplements' of the dream. In theory, the farther you go from that room, the more these deductions and supplements will deviate from reason and common sense. The edge of the dream will become more and more absurd and dangerous, and there may even be cliffs that disappear out of thin air. But we have come so far... and this dream is still going on!"
Duncan nodded slightly as he listened - he did not have as clear and complete theoretical understanding as Agou, but his guess was almost the same.
Shirley finally came to her senses. She took a deep breath and said, "So... I should have walked out of my dreamland a long time ago. Theoretically, this place is either distorted beyond recognition or it should be nothingness... Then where are we now? Is this still my dream~?!"
No one could answer Shirley's question, and Duncan could only look around with a thoughtful expression.
Everywhere he looked, there were burnt and charred streets. The city after the fire was like an ugly scar, deeply cutting into the city-state. This scar of fire extended all the way to the end of his sight, and he didn't know how many more blocks were ahead.
He looked in another direction and saw some tall buildings near the block. One of the distillation towers of a factory was piercing straight into the sky amidst the smoke and fog. The surface of the tower was covered with coiled pipes and had a jagged skeleton, like a strange mountain.
Duncan couldn't help but stare at the tall distillation tower, thinking that if he stood on the distillation tower, he might be able to overlook the entire fire scene.
Suddenly, his eyes froze.
The scene that Nina had described to her came to mind:
From a high place, overlooking the burned city, the streets are like a scar that runs through the entire city-state...
This is what Nina saw in her dream—just from a different perspective!
Duncan had an astonishing guess in his mind. He turned his head and looked at Shirley: "We... may have entered another dream."
"Another dream?" Shirley was stunned. "Whose dream?"
"Nina's - follow me." Duncan said briefly, and then walked towards the direction of the distillation tower.
He did not summon Ai to "travel" in his dream, because first of all, he did not know whether the pigeon could enter the dream by walking in the spirit world like himself, and secondly, he also needed Ai to "stand guard" outside for him and monitor whether there were other supernatural powers that interfered with his actions.
Fortunately, the distillation tower was not far from the block; it was located in a factory next door, and the two blocks were connected by a straight alley.
Shirley followed in a daze. She hadn't figured out why Mr. Duncan said that he had entered Nina's dream. Duncan walked quickly forward, looking up at the tall tower from time to time.
He was trying to find Nina.
If this was really Nina's dream, then the other person should be standing on the distillation tower - that was the tallest building in sight, and its location was perfect for overlooking the entire fire scene.
But until the two men and the dog were about to arrive at the factory, Duncan did not see any figure on the distillation tower.
He was a little confused, but before he could think more about it, a strange feeling of being watched suddenly came from not far away, which made him stop abruptly.
Duncan looked up in the direction where he felt something was happening. In his field of vision, a tall and thin figure wearing a strange black long coat and holding a large black umbrella appeared at the corner of the street!
In this dream world where there were traces of fire everywhere and embers still burning in the streets, a strange man holding an umbrella suddenly appeared. This scene was so weird, and this time not only did Duncan see the figure, but Shirley next to him also stopped suddenly.
"There's someone over there!" Shirley exclaimed.
"Did you see it too?" Duncan asked subconsciously, and the moment he finished speaking, a vague and strange murmur suddenly came from the direction of the figure not far away.
It was not any language Duncan knew. The overly complex and distorted tremolo and overlapping echoes in the voice made him doubt that it was not any "language" at all. However, he still heard a hint of astonishment in the voice.
The "weirdo" holding the umbrella seemed very surprised. He seemed not to have expected to see a few "uninvited guests" wandering around here.
And at the moment when the muttering sound fell, the strange figure holding the umbrella suddenly moved!
Duncan was unable to see clearly what the other party did, but he noticed with the corner of his eye that several black shadows suddenly jumped out from under the other party's long coat. Those were actually pure "shadows" that rushed towards this side rapidly along the nearby walls and streets. Then the figure holding an umbrella in the distance disappeared out of thin air. The next second, his body reappeared with the help of one of the rapidly approaching shadows, and pounced directly in front of Shirley as if teleported!
But Shirley had already reacted by then. She was in tune with the Deep Hound and had the same quick reaction speed as the Deep Hound. At the moment when the figure just gathered and had no time to make a move, she had already suddenly raised her right hand.
"Anyway, it's definitely a good idea to have a fucking fight first!"
The girl yelled with a strange excitement, the black chain in her hand creaked, and she swung Agou around and threw him to the opposite side!
