Clansia, Abyss County.
There was no grass growing on the barren land. Occasionally, a few crooked trees stood alone in the wilderness, their dry trunks covered with debris, as if they would break at the slightest touch.
There was no wind blowing between heaven and earth, the atmosphere seemed frozen, making even breathing extremely difficult. The heavy, condensed atmosphere made it difficult to generate buoyancy, even birds couldn't fly through. This place was practically a forbidden zone for life.
Looking down from the sky more than ten thousand meters above, this gray land is as ugly as a scar, and in the center of this scar there is a black basin, which is extremely dark and has no end in sight. It seems that it does not lead to the underground, but to another world.
This black abyss is the origin of the name of Abyss County. It seals the source of disaster, the vortex of chaos.
A thousand years ago, the Chaos Calamity swept across the entire world of Ivar, wiping out nearly half of the population and billions of lives, a greater number than ever lost in war. Some smaller races were completely wiped out, such as the ancient ogres, the legendary mermaids, and even the descendants of the giants. All vanished in that calamity.
What exactly is Chaos Phantom? It is difficult to explain with ordinary images, and even the name itself is full of ambiguity.
It seemed to have form yet lack it, drifting like mist, a phantom beast stalking the world. Wherever it passed, mana became utterly chaotic, and the very fabric of life shifted. Plants quickly withered and died, and animals went mad and mutated. While most mutated animals quickly perished, some survived, becoming strangely powerful.
These mutated creatures have no reason and only act according to chaotic instincts. There is no pattern to their actions. Some are extremely bloodthirsty, some become extremely eager to mate, some keep digging holes and digging in the ground without stopping, and some chase the sun until they die.
Wherever the Chaos Phantom invades, it will become a mess. If a transcendent person steps in, he will be slowly infected, and his own magic power will be slowly eroded like a virus. Once this erosion spreads to the core of the soul, it will drive people crazy. But if even the core of the soul is not condensed, then like the mutated creatures, most of them will die, and only a small number of mutations will succeed and become wandering monsters.
In its early days, this chaotic phantom had few rivals, spreading across the land and ocean at an extremely fast pace. Ordinary flames would only cause its powder to spread rapidly, and the extraordinary beings of the Ivar world could only use highly intense energy to indiscriminately purify it.
But high-level extraordinary people are a minority after all, and their bodies will be corroded if they are exposed too much. The whole world fell into endless despair.
Until a pure white beam of light pierced through the dark clouds and an angel descended to the earth.
When you first see angels, it is easy to mistake them for the winged tribe of orcs, but in fact they are closer to light and have no entity. Only a small number of high-level angels can condense into energy entities.
These angels possessed a strong resistance to the erosion of Chaos, and their power and methods could effectively purify and isolate the forces of Chaos. With their help, the world of Ivar ultimately achieved victory over the scourge of Chaos, but at the cost of the near-total destruction of the angels who descended upon the world. Of the three highest-ranking Seraphim, one fell into the abyss, one was reduced to a statue, and the last, a mutilated figure, returned to the heavens.
Thanks to the Angels' assistance and to eliminate the remnants of Chaos, the Angelic Church flourished in various regions, branching into several different sects due to varying local customs. However, the Angelic Church's recognized holy site remains Mount Karenriel, where a statue of a Seraph incarnates itself.
The chaos vortex in Abyss County was originally an important fulcrum of the Angel Church. Many extraordinary people from the angel sequence gathered here, and it was also guarded by the Lightning Knights of the Thunder Tribe.
But since the West Wind Civil War, the Lightning Knights were completely wiped out, and this place became empty. After the establishment of Clansia, some help was added, but unfortunately, the country was well-intentioned but unable to do so. The newly established country still needed time to grow and accumulate the number of extraordinary people.
Inside a huge church near the vortex of chaos, although it was not yet completely dark, the place was already filled with candles. Figures in black robes moved quickly, gathering together at the call of the bell.
"Head Priest, the 207 black-robed judges have arrived." A church executive who was also wearing a black robe reported.
"Okay." After a brief answer, the high priest walked up the steps. He was wearing a white robe with a bloody arm printed on the back, tightly grasping a chain.
"Everyone, just this morning, a breach appeared in the seal of the Chaos Vortex. Some Chaos Phantoms with a small amount of intelligence broke through and escaped to the outside world."
"At noon, the commander of the Zhenyuan Army and I reported this matter to the church headquarters, the Sages' Association, and the officials of Clancy."
"Now, before they get too far, you will lead the team to hunt down these escaping Chaos Phantoms."
"Every Chaos Phantom must be destroyed in the desolate wilderness, no matter how many sacrifices are required!"
"Yes." A low but firm response came from below. Then, one by one, the Inquisitors above Sequence 6 filed out of the church and scattered across the gray wilderness. Their faces beneath the hoods of their robes were filled with wrinkles, while others had completely white hair. These people were basically Beyonders with no hope of advancement. For the sake of that noble oath, they had remained here until death claimed their lives.
After the black-robed judges left, the chief priest breathed a sigh of relief and then asked.
