Chapter 423: Past and Rebirth

Extra, Volume of Knowledge

Loran Hill looked up the data stored in the system. Although the records about human decline were incomplete, he still knew the general process.

Since the meteor shower in the 21st century, supernatural powers have begun to awaken in various places.

All kinds of creatures in nature also mutated rapidly. Many strange abilities made it difficult to guard against them. Similarly, the number of mutated viruses increased dramatically, causing widespread plagues and making various antibiotics ineffective. Even if they were eventually contained, the human population would be greatly reduced.

In that era, various countries, governments, and organizations, both official and private, began to focus on studying this strange phenomenon or ability.

The first wave of extraordinary people among humans were naturally controlled. The lucky ones could become research assistants in large organizations or enjoy better treatment. The unlucky ones, caught by underground organizations or fringe organizations, would suffer greatly.

Sometimes, in order to obtain some rare and extreme data, researchers do not have much moral bottom line.

It was for this reason that the first group of extraordinary people began to band together to protect themselves and safeguard their own interests, and ultimately, due to the conflict of ideologies, they split from the old humanity. However, the old human government could not tolerate such a large-scale existence out of control, and so war broke out.

The mutated humans called themselves the New Humans. Although they were few in number, most of them could wield extraordinary powers, surpassing ordinary humans in many aspects, giving them an initial advantage. However, the Old Humans rapidly advanced in genetic technology, and humans whose genes were modified to adapt to these powers emerged. These humans were called Gene Sequencers. From then on, almost all newborns of the Old Humans were Gene Sequencers.

The gene sequencers were slightly weaker than the New Humans, but their numbers were immense, and from that point on, the combined power of the Old Humans surpassed the New Humans. Unfortunately, this good fortune was short-lived. The number of creatures in nature surpassed that of humans by hundreds of times. The mutated creatures grew to enormous sizes, their claws sharpened, and some could wield fire, among other strange phenomena. Their unconscious, instinctive actions destroyed numerous human facilities, including power lines, fiber optic cables, pipelines, and roads.

The industrial chain of modern human society is becoming increasingly complex. A single missing link can render subsequent processes inoperable. Ultimately, numerous factories are forced to halt production, severely impacting society's overall productivity. Thus, the old and new humans ceased hostilities and began to respond to the invasion of mutated creatures.

The human government began to shrink its territories and concentrate its industrial areas, and the population slowly recovered. However, the mutant creatures continued to evolve, and within just a decade or so, the two sides began a life-or-death race.

But in the end, the mutated creatures won the race. Their numerical advantage overwhelmed everything. Moreover, intelligent rulers emerged among them, commanding large numbers of mutated creatures to continuously attack human defenses like waves.

Finally, humanity used nuclear bombs, sending countless mushroom clouds across the land. Having reached this point, to prevent the mutated creatures from resurfacing, humans on Earth used nuclear bombs to cleanse the land. Countless dust clouds obscured the sky, and the oceans, deprived of sunlight, caused algae to die in large numbers, disrupting the food chain. The seas were filled with corpses, and Earth entered a nuclear winter.

Without sunlight, plants cannot survive, and without plants as food, other creatures will also become extinct. The remaining humans lie in hibernation chambers, waiting for the Earth to restart again.

When the dust settles and the sun shines again, the world will no longer be the same as before.

Diary of Ruins Excavation in Asia HA-46

3622.11.24

We entered here on November 7th of this month. Our team consists of 9 people, carrying two excavation units and one detection unit. We dug downwards based on the residual consciousness signals.

The process was not smooth. We encountered several strange beasts at the beginning. The alarm on the shuttle kept ringing, and sometimes we couldn't even go to the toilet in peace.

Fortunately, the two guards in the team were both top students in the military academy, and the Liquid Blade-4 armor they drove was also very powerful, which allowed them to repel several waves of attacks from Sequence 5 monsters.

They seem to value this place very much, as if they have some treasure. This is a good sign. I hope they can sell some goods this time, so that my year-end bonus can be settled. I also want to buy a custom bionic maid. I have saved up several years' salary for this.

3622.12.5

It seems we've unearthed some tough stuff. One of the excavation units is broken, and the replacement shuttle we contacted won't arrive until next weekend. That's taking too long. Will we be able to go back before the end of the year? It's really cold outside here.

--------

3622.12.12

Well, those hard guys are actually some kind of rare mineral.

They're the product of mana and matter, perhaps created during the First Impact? That's what the team's nerdy scholar says, anyway.

--------

3622.12.18

It's shipped, but the graphics aren't very good. This ruin seems to have been created suddenly during the First Impact, when Mana first came into contact with reality and a drastic change occurred. The people inside died instantly before they even realized what was happening. (It looks like a city from the past)

3622.12.20

Batch after batch of excavations have been carried out. This cyan, transparent substance, like amber, solidifies the contents within. Thanks to this, we can even see the daily necessities of ancient humans, which are not much different from those of today. Humanity has truly declined, with no major innovations in all these years.
