The small mouth beneath Loran Hill's mask opened, wanting to speak, but then closed again. Her voice wasn't loud, and she felt a bit embarrassed to shout at the top of her lungs.
The dancing fireball then expanded, rose into the sky, and exploded like fireworks, directly illuminating an area of hundreds of meters, and the masked black figure below was fully displayed to the eyes of the villagers.
"It's the Demon Slayer!"
"Yes, that mask, and such powerful strength, must be the Demon Slayer-sama."
Seeing the familiar mask, the villagers shouted excitedly, as if they had seen a savior. Then the whole village gradually became lively, and all kinds of lights were lit. It was no longer as deserted and silent as before.
The gate outside the village opened, and several stronger villagers came out. Upon seeing Loran Hill, they bowed respectfully before welcoming him into the village.
"I received instructions from the witch to come here to get rid of the monster that's causing trouble." The surrounding torches crackled, illuminating the evil ghost's mask under the hood.
Although he looked ferocious, what surprised several villagers was that the voice under his mask was clear and ethereal, which made people less afraid.
"Yes, yes, yes, it is true that we sought help from the shrine because we recently encountered a vicious monster."
After waking up, the villagers gathered on the road in the village and watched the girl in black walk in. Some children even asked their parents curiously what a ghost slayer was.
"That's a strong man under the shrine, who is here to protect us." The mother explained patiently, and then pulled the child behind her to prevent him from disturbing the adult.
Loranhill's black crystal eyes looked at the surrounding villagers through the two holes in the mask, and then continued to ask questions.
"What level is that monster, and what does it look like?"
"Your Excellency, we don't know the exact level of that monster. It's shaped like a giant eagle, but has a snake-like tail and sharp claws. Many villagers had their skulls scratched by its claws, and then they were picked up and taken to its nest to be eaten." As they spoke, the villagers were still in shock.
"I understand. Then where is its nest? Does anyone know?" Loran Hill and a few others stopped at the door of a large house in the village.
"No one knows for sure, but they usually appear in the afternoon and return north with their prey."
"Still further north?"
"Yes," the villager replied.
After that, several people walked into the house. The villagers quickly cleaned up a clean place for the girl to stay and prepared a relatively sumptuous dinner for the adult.
Looking at the fragrant chicken and potatoes in the casserole, the girl felt a surge of emotion in her heart.
This place is not like the outside world. Meat is extremely rare. She had sensed before entering the village that there were no more than 10 chickens in the entire village. She made a meal for herself today. If she stayed for too long, she was afraid that the villagers would slaughter all the chickens.
She scooped out a few pieces with a spoon and put them on a plate. Then she called the villagers outside the house and asked them to distribute them to the children in the village, and told them not to serve them so richly in the future.
The villager was both grateful and apprehensive, fearing that the master might have thought the food wasn't tasty but simply refused to say so. In front of such an important figure, no amount of respect could be excessive, as this person could decide the fate of the entire village, including his own.
night.
After dinner, Loran Hill rested in the village for a while. An oil lamp was lit on the table in front of the bed, and the orange-yellow light swayed with the flames.
Sitting on the bedside, Loran Hill pulled out an old book she had brought with her and began flipping through it. It was a book handed down from the Chi Kingdom hundreds of years ago, chronicling the dramatic changes of that time. Two birds, perched on either side of the quilt, surrounded the girl. Unable to understand the words, they moved slightly and closed their eyes to rest.
The pages of the book were yellowed and the corners were a little broken, but it was well preserved and very flat. As the girl turned the pages, a faint herbal fragrance wafted out, which was the anti-moth method left behind in the past.
Although it was indoors, it was still a bit cold compared to the previous residence in the shrine, perhaps because the power of the Nine Netherworld was relatively strong.
After flipping through the books for a while, the girl turned her gaze to the chubby goldfinches beside her. With an idea, she picked up the goldfinches, which were slightly larger than a hen, and held them in her arms like a pillow. Then she rested her chin on the warm fur of the goldfinches and continued to flip through the book in front of her.
Chirp—
Daiju shouted in protest, saying that the big bird Loranhill was bullying it more and more.
The aloof blue jay next to her opened his eyes, glanced at the fat bird, then moved his feet to the quilt at the girl's feet, continued to squat and sleep, ignoring the protest of his good brother.
"Okay, okay, stop crying. I'll make you something delicious tomorrow." The girl stroked Dai Ju comfortingly, promising her some promises to calm the little guy down.
Chirp—
After chirping a few more times, the goldcrest folded its wings as usual, bearing the weight that shouldn't be borne by its age, and then squatted down again. It had no choice, because it felt so comfortable around the big bird, Loran Hill. It definitely wouldn't run away. It was still waiting for the big bird to make it a delicious meal.
————
After a night, in the morning, the girl simply washed up and started to move.
She would not sit and wait for the monster to attack again, as that might take a long time.
Under the astonished gazes of the crowd, the woman in black clothes and with a ghost face flew into the sky like an owl, her black figure soaring straight up.
In the world after the rules of heaven and earth changed, the ability to fly is not as common as it was in the past, and seems to be strictly restricted. Therefore, the fact that this demon-slaying messenger can fly has surprised and envied many people.
