The western border of the empire, the Grizzli Territory.
It was just daybreak and the morning mist in the mountains had not yet completely dissipated. The tall city wall shrouded in the mist was vaguely visible. The alert soldiers, despite feeling sleepy, still stood on the city wall, patrolling back and forth from time to time.
At the foot of the hill south of the fortress, soldiers in gray uniforms crouched, rifles in hand, carefully moving through the forest shade and leaping over waterlogged potholes, moving as quietly as possible along the mountainside. Using the shade of the trees to avoid the surveillance of the patrolling griffon knights, they gradually approached the massive fortress towering over the mountain from the side.
Around 8 o'clock, the sun slowly rose and the white mist in the mountains gradually began to dissipate.
Squad leaders quietly walked across the ravines where they were hiding, gestured to the soldiers, and then watched them nod one by one, getting the response that they were ready.
Time passed minute by minute. These soldiers were huddled in this narrow ravine. It was hot and crowded. No one spoke. They could only hear each other's slow heartbeats and smell the sweat, mixed with a hint of dew and soil in the early morning.
Some people began to close their eyes and take deep breaths, while others slowly touched the black gun in their hands, carefully checking it over and over again.
The golden sunlight shines through the gaps between the trees, slanting into the corners of the forest, forming a visible grating in the vague morning mist. Occasionally, one or two rabbits and forest deer cross the grass, nibble on the green grass, then raise their heads and look around to observe whether there are any enemies.
The temperature in the ravine was getting higher and higher, but the world outside was still silent.
"Bang—bang—"
The dull sound of gunfire broke the silence of the early morning.
The shrill whistling sound cut through the sky, landed on the city wall, and then exploded, rocks flying everywhere, and some soldiers defending the city were also blown to pieces in the explosion.
Long trumpets began to sound in the city, followed by more rapid artillery fire that continuously bombarded the mountain fortress.
Unfortunately, this was not very effective because the defenders did not leave too many soldiers on the city walls. Their commanders were already familiar with this type of attack and adopted a more multi-layered defense system.
Soon, counterattack artillery fire was heard in the fortress, and the attacking artillery positions began to be bombarded. Even with the interference of witches and wizards, some artillery bombardments began to cause casualties.
The cannons that were transported from the south into the mountains with great difficulty were blown to pieces by the return fire. The soldiers who fired them died in the explosion of the shells, and the remaining soldiers began to evacuate.
But such sacrifice finally brought a rare opportunity.
A section of the fortress wall collapsed, revealing a rare gap.
In the past, by the time the attacking coalition forces rushed forward, this gap would have been heavily guarded, with dense war machinery set up and a stacked sandbag defense line laid out.
Such situations have occurred many times during the attacks and defenses in the past few months. The general defending the city is no mediocre person, but a new generation of generals in the western border of the empire. He has formulated many counterattack plans for this fortress. Every time a flaw is revealed, he will quickly repair it. Unless there is an absolute gap in strength, it is basically impossible to break through the elite legion led by him on the battlefield.
However, today's situation did not develop as usual.
The moment the gap appeared, crimson flares pierced the sky with a whistling sound, and then the desolate attack horn began to blow.
A mass of dark figures jumped out of the ravine and ran towards the gap at the fastest speed in their lives. They held their muskets and ran and jumped among the rugged rocks and bushes like crazy.
"Bang—bang—"
The muskets mounted on the battlements of the city wall began firing, and black and red blood splattered from the running figures from time to time, and then they fell to the ground in pain. The thick blood overflowed from their covered palms and mixed with the soil. As they struggled and twisted, the gravel and dust were dyed a deep red.
As the blood flowed more and more, he began to feel his vision turning black, his consciousness gradually blurred, and his body also had the illusion of being cold.
Slowly, the soldier stopped struggling and lay motionless under the early morning sky.
The battle continued, and soldiers in gray uniforms ran past him. They charged into the exposed gap, climbed over the huge gray rubble, and then picked up their guns and shot at the enemy.
Blood flowers bloomed on the gray military uniforms. The first soldier who rushed into the city was riddled with bullets, but his successors rushed forward one after another. They hurriedly searched for possible shelters, rolled over and charged, and then opened fire.
The bullets hit the rocks and the ground with a crisp sound, and the sounds of shooting and shouting were everywhere. After dozens of people were sacrificed, the soldiers who rushed into the city finally began to fight back and provide cover.
"Get down, don't stop!"
The squad leader's shout rang out amid the noisy sound of gunfire, and then he rushed out of the narrow bunker with a gun to make room for the following soldiers.
Then one soldier after another rushed out of the bunker and charged towards the shooting enemy in front. They could not stop and had to expand their victory in the limited time. They could not stay in the bunker and always had to leave room for subsequent teammates.
Dazzling flames burst out from the muzzle of the gun. In the shaking and sour vision, the enemy's existence was obscured by dust and flames and could not be seen clearly.
With my heart beating wildly, my teammates in front and beside me kept falling down, but the enemy's gunfire never diminished.
He rolled over in pain again, feeling a sharp pain in his left shoulder, which was then ignored. Lying behind the squad leader's body, he finally got a precious breath, and at this time he could see the enemy shooting in the dust and fire.
