Beggar Supervisor

Beggar Supervisor

Wu Zi sighed again: "The problem now is that the murderous aura left behind by the leopard demon, because it has no willpower to control it, will instinctively absorb power for its own use. Moreover, this mindless aura does not know right from wrong, does not follow rules, and has no bottom line. It has no control over itself, and its power is enormous. In the future, it will grow into an uncontrollable scourge."

"So, how should we resolve this, Wu Zi?"

"If we want to eliminate this force, we need to use the Hundred-Man Killing Formation of the Imperial Observatory. But once the killing formation is activated, all the spiritual creatures and demons within a hundred miles will be indiscriminately annihilated. This... is truly against the will of Heaven."

"Isn't there any other way?"

“Yes…” Fen Yu walked to their window at some point, looking at Xu Yi with a smile: “If there is a power of the same origin to absorb it, resist its killing intent, and eliminate its malevolence, then it will naturally be harmless.”

Homologous? Absorption? Xu Yi tentatively asked, "Are you talking about me?"

“Of course you can, young lady,” Fen Yu said with a cunning smile. “You are a ghost cultivator, and you share the same origin as that malevolent energy. As long as you can withstand its killing intent and take it under your control, you will not only have nothing to worry about, but it will also help your cultivation.”

Xu Yi was always obedient. He remembered that Wu Zi had said that Fen Yu was not a good person, so he didn't speak but just looked at Wu Zi. Wu Zi continued, "Then you become immersed in that malevolent energy and become a ghost controlled by it, so that it will be convenient for Fen Daoist to kill you? In this way, the problem of malevolent energy is solved, and Fen Yu's reputation is also improved. Isn't that killing two birds with one stone?"

When Fen Yu saw Wu Zi directly expose his thoughts, his expression changed, and he said fiercely, "This is the best way." Then he put on a smiling face and advised Wu Zi, "Fellow Daoist Wu, don't let petty love ruin important matters!"

"Get out." Wu Zi slammed the window shut.

After Fenyu left, Xu Yi looked at Wu Zi timidly and asked, "Is the method he mentioned really going to work?"

Wu Zi chuckled: "What? You really want to do what he said?"

"But didn't you say that if we use the killing formation, all the spiritual creatures within a hundred miles will be wiped out?" Xu Yi whispered, "If I die, many others can survive..."

Before Xu Yi could finish speaking, Wu Zi interrupted him: "Shut up. You alone? When you were alive, they said you should die so their country wouldn't bear the stigma of starting a war, but who cared about that? Even the history books don't record it. The thirteenth princess, who grew up in the cold palace, is only mentioned in the history books as having died in the eighteenth year of the Dacheng era. But did anyone write that you died for your country? They said in private that you were 'righteous,' and those three ordinary words took your life. Now someone else is saying you should die, and you still believe it? If in the end it really is necessary to exterminate the spiritual creatures of this hundred miles to stop that malevolent energy, then it can only be said that they were destined for this calamity in their fate! Why should you bear it alone?"

Wu Zi's eyes were red. He gripped Xu Yi's shoulders with some force, and his words were heavy: "Xu Yi, the word 'fate' is not written like this, do you understand?"

“What if…it’s not me who’s going to die today?” Xu Yi looked up and stared directly into Wu Zi’s eyes: “If it were a nameless, faceless ghost, someone you’ve never met, would you still be so adamant in your disagreement?”

Xu Yi's question undoubtedly struck a nerve with Wu Zi, bringing tears to his eyes. He frowned, forcing back the tears, and asked, "What are you saying, Xu Yi? What are you saying?"

“I’m asking you, Wu Zi.”

Wu Zi was so angry he laughed. He suppressed the stinging in his nose and asked with a smile, "What are you asking me about Xu Yi? Are you asking me if I have any selfish motives in eliminating demons and protecting the righteous path? Are you asking me if I have any feelings?"

Xu Yi looked at Wu Zi, who was trying to hold back her tears, and apologized, "I'm sorry, Wu Zi, I just suddenly thought of it."

"Are you asking me: Does your importance in my heart already exceed my determination to eliminate demons and uphold justice?"

Xu Yi lowered her head and remained silent. This silence prompted Wu Zi to let out a self-deprecating laugh: "Ha... Xu Yi... I never thought you would ask me this... I never expected you to teach me like this..."

The tear that had been held back for so long finally fell uncontrollably, shattering Wu Zi's pride and composure. Wu Zi took two steps back in defeat, swallowing hard several times to ease the bitterness rising in his heart. He replied concedingly, "Yes, I would also disagree. In my record of practicing demon-slaying and righteous cultivation, there has never been a precedent of sacrificing one for another. But you asked a good question, Xu Yi..."

Wu Zi's eyes reddened again: "If it were you, even at the last moment, I would not sacrifice you..." Wu Zi's eyes filled with tears again. He swallowed his tears and the bitterness in his mouth before calmly saying: "I once said that as long as you are a human being, you will have seven emotions and six desires. This is a matter of course. You are someone who is included in my sense of reason."

You are someone who is included in my understanding and reason.

Xu Yi realized she had gone too far with her question, so she tugged at Wu Zi's sleeve and apologized, "I'm sorry, Wu Zi. I promise I will never again risk my life because of someone's casual remark. I just... I just suddenly thought of that question. I'm sorry, Wu Zi... Don't be angry..."

"No more sending people to their deaths?"

“Yes,” Xu Yi nodded, “It won’t happen again.”

Wu Zi let out a long sigh and gently pulled Xu Yi into his arms: "Xu Yi, from now on, you're not allowed to ask me that again, understand?"

"Yes, I heard you, I won't do it again..."

Wu Zi tightened his grip on Xu Yi's hand: "What you just asked me is breaking my heart..."

"It's my fault, it's my fault..." Xu Yi patted Wu Zi on the shoulder: "Then how should we resolve this matter?"

"I already wrote to the supervisor a few days ago to inquire. Let's wait for his reply!"

The supervisor's reply was that he had come in person. Xu Yi and Wu Zi both sensed the supervisor's presence, and when they reached the main hall, they were both stunned…

The old man in the imperial city, once known for his flowing robes and otherworldly air, was now dressed only in a rough cloth robe that didn't quite fit him. It was too wide at the shoulders and waist, looking loose and unkempt, and the sleeves were too short. His once exquisite jade lotus crown was gone, and his once-thick white hair was now only tied back with a thick strip of cloth… Only the whisk in his hand remained the same one from the imperial palace… He looked as if he had come from begging on the streets…

Xu Yi took two steps closer and asked curiously, "Supervisor... what's wrong?"

The supervisor did not answer, but Wu Zi spoke up: "He must have been begging for alms from everyone he met along the way, so he ended up like this."

Xu Yi exclaimed in surprise, "Huh? You're seeing me off all the way?"

"They said they liked it, so I gave it to them. It's just material possessions, I don't lack anything... Besides, appearances are just appearances, what's there to fuss about?" The supervisor replied quite matter-of-factly.

Wu Zi glanced speechlessly at the whisk in the supervisor's hand and retorted, "Then why didn't you give away the whisk, sir..."

“The whisk won’t do…” The supervisor stroked the drooping feathers of the whisk: “If we give it to someone else, you won’t be able to handle things here…”

"Huh?" Xu Yi was even more surprised: "So, if the matter here doesn't require the whisk, you would still give away this excellent magical artifact?"

The supervisor nodded and said earnestly, "Little Xu Yi, these are all material possessions..."

Xu Yi thought of the palace eunuchs earnestly asking the emperor for money, pursed her lips... and after a long while replied, "Alright."

"Sigh..." Wu Zi sighed, "You've always been like this... Never mind, how does the supervisor plan to handle this matter?"

The supervisor flicked his whisk, his eyes gleaming. The moment the aura of a cultivator appeared, the entire noisy hall inexplicably quieted down. His tone was calm: "Since the problem lies in that murderous aura, why not just disperse it?"

Scattered? Xu Yi was speechless for a moment. He and Wu Zi had worked together and even used a magic artifact to borrow the yang energy of the midday sun to barely escape from that malevolent aura. How could it be scattered directly by the supervisor?

"Is it that easy?" Xu Yi was somewhat surprised.

Wu Zi glanced at Xu Yi and said in a sinister tone, "You arrived too quickly, otherwise someone would have had to sacrifice themselves again."

"Oh?" The supervisor put away his whisk, smiled, and flicked Xu Yi's forehead: "You never learn!"

The supervisor was highly skilled, and he didn't hold back much when he flicked Xu Yi. Xu Yi felt as if her head had been hit by a large bell, and she felt dizzy and lightheaded. She was flicked back two steps, which startled Wu Zi, who quickly helped her up. After the dizziness in her head subsided, she became much clearer... Xu Yi understood that the supervisor was helping her, so she cupped her hands in thanks to the supervisor and said, "Thank you, Supervisor."

Unexpectedly, the supervisor came over and flicked her hard again. This time, however, he didn't use any magic. She only felt a slight pain in her skin. Xu Yi touched her forehead and looked at the supervisor with a puzzled expression. The supervisor, however, had a disappointed look on his face: "You are too upright. You are not like a little girl at all."

Xu Yi considered her age: eighteen years in the palace, twenty years in Wuji Mountain, and several more years of travel. She then honestly replied, "I'm certainly not a little girl anymore!"

"How old are you? How can you be as old as me? You're talking nonsense."

Xu Yi pouted, not daring to retort. The supervisor, however, looked at Wu Zi with a more probing gaze…

Wu Zi chuckled sheepishly, and stubbornly held onto Xu Yi's hand, refusing to let go...

The supervisor's body didn't react, but the shadow beneath Xu Yi's feet rushed towards him, startling him so much that he instinctively released Xu Yi's hand. He heard the supervisor relay his message: "This girl is on a different path from you, it's better not to start a relationship." He was startled, but showed no outward reaction, only looking at the supervisor with a wronged expression. The supervisor sighed and shook his head slightly at him.

It turns out that he and Xu Yi were not destined to be together.
