18 Chapter 18
◎Some people want to chase someone, and they want me to accompany them◎
After school in the evening, the cool autumn breeze blew across her cheeks. Sang Xinqi sat on the back seat of the electric car, her fingertips unconsciously tugging at the hem of Jiang Xun's school uniform.
"Hey!" Jiang Xun's suddenly high voice startled her awake. "I've told you three times what you're having for dinner, and you didn't even say a word?"
"Ah?" Sang Xinqi blinked blankly, "What did you say?"
The red light came on, and Jiang Xun slammed on the brakes, turning his head to glare at her. "Ever since I met Liao Yishen, I'm not even worthy of a 'read' mark from you, am I?"
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Sang Xinqi gently patted his back. "You've always been number one among my best friends."
When the green light came on, Jiang Xun deliberately drove the car crookedly. "First place? Where's Liao Yishen?"
"He's not a good friend."
Jiang Xun snorted, the car body twisted, and he let out a particularly naughty "Yo".
"Focus on the road!" Sang Xinqi grabbed the corner of his clothes and suddenly caught a glimpse of a familiar figure flashing across the intersection ahead.
Jiang Xun also saw it, "Fuck! Isn't that Brother Liao?"
Sang Xinqi's heartbeat suddenly quickened. In the twilight, the tall figure was riding a black electric bike, and his white and blue school uniform was slightly blown by the wind.
She subconsciously pinched Jiang Xun's waist and said, "Catch up!"
"Forget your friends when you see a beautiful woman!" Jiang Xun complained, but suddenly stepped on the accelerator.
When the two electric bikes stopped side by side in front of the zebra crossing, Liao Yishen turned around in surprise, and his handsome eyes lit up when he saw Sang Xinqi.
"Brother Liao, are you riding an electric bike too?" Jiang Xun asked.
"Hmm," Liao Yishen tapped his fingers lightly on the handlebars, "Riding a bike in autumn is more comfortable than taking the bus."
His eyes swept over Sang Xinqi's long hair, which was tousled by the wind. "Why are you so late today?"
"We're just waiting for this young lady to start her shift," Jiang Xun curled his lips, "usually we'd be home by now."
The street lights came on and two trams were crossing each other on the road.
The three of them chatted from time to time, but there were many trams on the road, so they couldn't drive side by side all the time, so they could only drive one in front and one behind.
Sang Xinqi looked at Liao Yishen's back in front of her, and wanted to ask him about the girl who confessed her love, and why he didn't mention it to her. While she was struggling to think about it, they arrived at the gate of the community.
"Liao Yishen," she finally waved to him, "bye, drive slowly."
"Okay," he nodded, with a gentle arc at the corner of his mouth. The wind brought by the electric car when it started lifted the strands of hair on his forehead, revealing his heroic brow bones.
Watching the figure walking away, Sang Xinqi suddenly felt a tightness in her chest, but it only lasted for a moment, and then it was blown away by the autumn wind.
-
As autumn deepened, the gears of high school finally started to turn seamlessly.
The countdown has been recorded on the back wall of the classroom since the students entered the third year of high school. Every morning, the student on duty solemnly turns a page, and chalk dust falls on the edge of the podium like a fine snow.
The piles of books and test papers in the classroom almost covered the desks. Chang Yisi rested his chin on his hand, looking at the falling sycamore leaves outside the window and sighed, "Time flies so fast. Two months of my senior year have already passed."
Sang Xinqi stopped writing and sighed softly, "Yeah, even the National Day holiday was three weeks ago."
"Tomorrow is Sunday again," Chang Yisi rubbed her sore eyes, "I did so badly in the last monthly exam. How come the weeks go by so quickly?" As she spoke, she couldn't help but rubbed her hair frantically.
Sang Xinqi comforted her, "Redo the wrong questions and find some similar questions to consolidate your knowledge."
"This is a good idea," Chang Yisi nodded, and after only a ten-minute break, he plunged into the sea of questions again.
When the school bell rang, the classroom quickly emptied out. Jiang Xun walked in holding a basketball and saw that only Sang Xinqi was still writing furiously.
"Some people want to chase someone and want me to accompany them," Jiang Xun put his schoolbag on the table and said in a deliberately long tone.
Sang Xinqi didn't even look up. "I just think it's more efficient to do homework in the classroom."
"You're just being stubborn," Jiang Xun snorted, and took out the test paper and started writing.
The only sound in the classroom was the rustling of pens scratching across paper. When Sang Xinqi stretched and looked out the window, it was already dark.
"Let's go," she started packing her schoolbag.
"Wait until I finish this question," Jiang Xun said without even raising his head.
When the two walked out of the school gate, dusk had already enveloped the entire street.
While waiting for the red light at the intersection, a familiar figure appeared beside them.
"Brother Liao!" Jiang Xun greeted him warmly.
Sang Xinqi was about to speak when she noticed the girl riding a pink electric bike next to Liao Yishen. The girl had a neat ponytail and was leaning close to Liao Yishen.
"Hello everyone, my name is Gu Chaoyan, and I'm Brother Liao's neighbor." The girl introduced herself sweetly.
"Brother Liao?" Jiang Xun and Sang Xinqi were both stunned. This affectionate name made Sang Xinqi feel depressed.
"I'm a freshman in high school this year. What about you?" Gu Chaoyan continued to ask enthusiastically.
"Senior year," Jiang Xun answered briefly.
Sang Xinqi forced a smile and said, "I'm also a senior in high school."
Just when Gu Chaoyan wanted to continue chatting, the green light came on.
"Let's go," Liao Yishen looked at Sang Xinqi and said.
Sang Xinqi nodded, but her heart was filled with mixed feelings. She suddenly remembered the high school girl who pursued Liao Yishen that Chang Yisi had mentioned a month and a half ago. It turned out that the story was still going on.
It was late at night, Sang Xinqi tossed and turned in bed, crumpling the soft quilt into a ball.
Occasionally, the sound of an alarm coming from outside the window after an electric scooter was accidentally hit by someone made the night even quieter.
Her fingers tapped and deleted repeatedly on the phone screen, but in the end she did not send the message that she wanted to ask but did not dare to ask.
She threw her phone to the end of the bed.
"bite--"
The phone suddenly rang, and Sang Xinqi jumped up from the bed as if she had been electrocuted, and frantically reached for the phone she had thrown at the end of the bed.
The moment the screen lit up, the corners of her mouth unconsciously rose.
"Would you like to study in the library tomorrow?"
Sang Xinqi bit her lower lip and typed quickly, "Okay!"
After sending the message, she put the phone against her chest and felt her heart beating so hard that it seemed like it was about to burst through her chest.
But the next second, she suddenly remembered her unfinished fashion design competition work, and her smile froze on her face. She scratched her hair in frustration. She had revised this work countless times.
"Let's go tomorrow afternoon. I have something to do in the morning."
She hesitated to send the message.
"Can."
Liao Yishen responded quickly.
Sang Xinqi breathed a sigh of relief, lay down on the bed, closed her eyes and went to sleep.
At five o'clock the next morning, Sang Xinqi woke up before the alarm clock rang.
She got up quietly, afraid of waking up her mother in the next room. She pushed open the door of the design room and immediately got to work.
The cloth, scissors, needle and thread flew in her hands, time passed by minute by minute, and when she finally put down the half-finished work with satisfaction, it was already twelve o'clock noon.
Mother Sang left a note saying that she was out partying with friends. Sang Xinqi hurriedly cooked a packet of instant noodles, swallowed it whole, and rushed out of the house.
From a distance, she saw Liao Yishen standing at the entrance of the community. The sunlight shone on him, outlining a slender silhouette.
He was wearing a simple blue shirt with a white T-shirt underneath, a black backpack casually draped over his shoulder, and was looking down at his phone.
"Have you been waiting long?" Sang Xinqi trotted over, her breathing still a little rapid.
Liao Yishen raised his head, the corners of his mouth slightly raised, "Just arrived."
He pointed to the back seat of the electric car and said, "Get in."
Sang Xinqi skillfully climbed onto the back seat, gently gripping both sides of the seat with both hands. "Finally, I'm sitting in the back of Brother Liao's electric scooter."
Liao Yishen chuckled.
The moment the electric car started, she leaned forward slightly due to inertia, and the tip of her nose almost touched Liao Yishen's back, and a faint scent of osmanthus penetrated her nostrils.
On the way, Sang Xinqi's heart was beating fast. She stared at the back of Liao Yishen's neck, where a small tuft of disobedient hair was sticking up. She wanted to reach out and push it down, but was afraid that the action would be too intimate.
"I heard..." Sang Xinqi finally couldn't help but speak, "You've been pursued by a freshman just a few days after school started?"
She could feel Liao Yishen's back stiffen noticeably.
"Well," he admitted briefly, "did it get to your school?"
"Yeah," Sang Xinqi bit her lower lip, her nails unconsciously digging into the edge of the seat, "Then..."
"I have no feelings for her," Liao Yishen said suddenly, his voice calm and firm.
Sang Xinqi's heart felt like it was being gently squeezed, and a secret joy spread in her chest. "Oh, so that's it."
As the electric car turned a corner, Liao Yishen's voice drifted in on the wind, "After my mother remarried, we moved into my stepfather's house. She's the daughter of my stepfather's best friend. I just treat her like a child."
He paused, "She suddenly confessed her feelings to me on the first day of school. I was quite surprised and rejected her on the spot, telling her to study hard."
Sang Xinqi listened quietly, her fingers twisted together unconsciously.
"But she didn't give up and kept pursuing me. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so I didn't tell her parents until last week, when I saw she was getting more and more aggressive, so I told her parents about it."
Sang Xinqi couldn't help but ask, "What did you say?"
"I told them to call the homeroom teacher and ask about her daughter's situation at school," Liao Yishen said with a hint of helplessness in his voice. "They asked me why, and I told them to call and find out."
Sang Xinqi chuckled, "You're really something."
Liao Yishen also chuckled. "She did stay quiet for a while afterwards, but she came to see me again a few days ago, saying she wanted to go to and from school together, and that she already regarded me as her brother."
Sang Xinqi's smile froze on her face. "Brother?" This routine was really common, but she didn't say it out loud and just remained silent.
They soon arrived at the library. Liao Yishen parked the car and the two walked into the study area side by side. The sunlight poured in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, giving the entire space a warm golden coating.
They chose a corner by the window and sat down, each taking out a book.
Sang Xinqi forced herself to concentrate on the book, but her eyes always unconsciously glanced at Liao Yishen. When he was concentrating, his brows would frown slightly, and his slender fingers would occasionally turn the pen and write neat notes on the paper.
"It seems..." Liao Yishen suddenly leaned closer, and his slender fingers gently tapped the notebook spread out in front of her, "The book is not as good-looking as me?"
Sang Xinqi's hand trembled, and the pen in her hand fell onto the table. Her heart was beating rapidly, and she said seriously, "I'm indeed not as good-looking as you."
