At 6:30 in the morning, Su Jin stood in front of the stove cooking porridge. After a month of recuperation, Lu Shiyi's condition had improved significantly.
Su Jin was in a very good mood as she made chicken soup wontons. The seaweed had been soaked and was used to decorate the wontons.
With the doctor's permission, Su Jin prepared three delicious cold dishes and four multi-grain steamed buns for Lu Shiyi's first day of training after his injury.
She didn't have any morning sickness this time, so Lu Shiyi went to training with peace of mind.
"Wife, are you awake?" Lu Shiyi was about to take his lunch box to the cafeteria to get food, but he saw smoke coming out of the kitchen chimney and pushed the door open. "Have you made wontons?"
"It's wontons. This one is a little smaller than wontons." Su Jin introduced the chicken soup wontons. Lu Shiyi reached out to hold the wontons, and took the side dishes in his right hand and went to the dining room.
"I will officially start work today. You should rest more at home during the day and do the heavy work when I come back." Lu Shiyi took advantage of breakfast time to quickly give Su Jin some instructions.
After breakfast, Lu Shiyi changed into his training uniform and went to work. Su Jin began to clean up the house. After tidying up the yard and the room, she prepared to go to the black market in the city.
When Lu Shiyi was on a mission, Su Jin went out twice. Each time, she disguised herself and went to the black market to sell things. When she was in a hurry, she went to the factory and sold a lot of food.
"Mrs. Lu, are you going out?" The military wives saw Su Jin going out again with her backpack on her back.
Su Jin nodded to a few people as a greeting and walked quickly out of the family compound.
The family members sat on the stone benches under the big locust tree, and several of them discussed what Su Jin would buy today.
Su Jin didn't take their words to heart and only wanted to get to the black market as soon as possible.
After leaving the family compound, Su Jin found a secluded alley, slipped into the space, and changed her appearance, becoming a pregnant peasant woman in her 30s. She took the opportunity of not having to go to work to help her family sell grain.
Su Jin carried a sack into the black market, paid the management fee, and put the sack back to its original location. This time she only sold 10 kilograms of millet, 20 kilograms of coarse grains, and 5 kilograms of bacon.
As soon as the black market opened in the morning, many people came to Su Jin's stall. They saw Su Jin coming and greeted him enthusiastically.
"Sister Yu, did you bring eggs and bacon this time? My grandson loves your eggs." asked an old woman in her 60s.
Su Jin lowered her voice and replied, "There are no eggs. The village can't always praise eggs."
Several people lamented, "When you get the eggs, be sure to save them for us. We almost had room to wander around a bit just to meet you."
"I took millet, grains and 5 kilograms of bacon." Su Jin opened the sack and revealed the contents.
Several people met at the stall, discussing how much food no one could buy.
After some discussion, several people bought all the food in Su Jin's sack, and even handed the money to the old woman, asking her to exchange it for whole coins.
"You stay here from now on, and we'll go shopping together." The old woman stuffed five dollars into Su Jin's pocket and turned away.
Su Jin left the black market with the sack. Every time she came to the black market, she would not sell too many things to prevent someone from targeting her.
She walked towards the factory's family quarters and heard the team members with red armbands coming in and out of the family quarters. She just passed by and left.
Su Jin pricked up her ears and listened to the loud shouting in the family compound. She quickened her pace back and did not dare to stop in front of the gate of the factory family compound.
A family member recognized Su Jin and immediately waved at her, telling her not to come over.
A female worker sneaked out, dragged Su Jin to a secret place, and whispered a warning to Su Jin not to come over for the next two months.
"Sister Yu, someone in the family compound reported that someone was selling grain, and they were looking in every household to see who had more grain." The female worker's family did not have enough food, so she bought more than 100 kilograms of grains from Su Jin, which allowed her family to safely get through the difficult end of the month.
"I'm coming to the supply and marketing cooperative in the county town today to buy some things. There aren't many things left in the village." Su Jin lowered his voice and said, "I might not be able to come here until the summer harvest."
Su Jin realized that something was wrong in the county town and immediately turned around and headed home.
Near the gate, there were villagers on both sides of the road, but Su Jin was talking about young chickens and went up to buy three.
"Please help tie the chicken's feet. I don't have a basket." After Su Jin bought the chicken, he found that he didn't carry the bamboo basket out.
"I'll give you this bamboo basket. You bought all the chickens in my house. My grandfather is going back." The old man stuffed three chickens into the bamboo basket. Su Jin was about to take money from his pocket when the old man stopped him. "I made this bamboo basket. It's not worth much."
After thanking the old man, Su Jin continued walking back with the bamboo basket in his right hand. He bought two fish from a stall not far away, carried them in his left hand, and hurried home.
Lu Shiyi led the team members out of the refinery and ran around. Seeing that Su Jin was holding things in both hands, he handed the team members to Lin Zitao and ran to her side.
"Don't carry such heavy things next time." Lu Shiyi took the fish and bamboo basket with his right hand, and the team members continued training.
The two returned home. Lu Shiyi quickly put the things at the kitchen door, and Su Jin instructed him to kill the chicken.
Su Jin didn't know that some family members in the courtyard were talking about Lu Shiyi and the food in Su Jin's family. Some thought that Lu Shiyi was injured and it was right for Su Jin to buy food for him, while others complained that she didn't know how to live.
"Xiao Jin, did you kill all three chickens?" Lu Shiyi was worried that if she paraded around with chickens, people would report her to the patrol team. "We already have two chickens."
"After you kill him, I will deal with it. Hurry up and go to training." Su Jin didn't want to delay Lu Shiyi's work. If he was a little late, he could say that he was worried about her and kept observing her.
"Go back to your room and change your clothes." After Lu Shiyi sent Su Jin out of the kitchen, he twisted his hands and broke the chicken's neck, then used a knife to chop off the chicken's neck and feet to prevent Su Jin from seeing the pain.
Su Jin changed into a navy blue home outfit and came out. Lu Shiyi had already plucked and gutted the three chickens.
Lu Shiyi pointed to the thermos and said, "Fill it with hot water later. I used up both bottles of hot water."
Su Jin nodded and agreed: "Go to work quickly, I will make you chestnut chicken later."
After Lu Shiyi washed his hands, he kissed her on the cheek and turned to leave.
Su Jin looked at the three young chickens on the chopping board, with a slight smile on his face. He handled the ingredients skillfully.
"Sister Lu, I have something to talk to you about!" Su Jin was preparing ingredients for lunch when the gate of the courtyard was slammed.
Su Jin didn't want to open the door, but the person outside never gave up, so she deserved to open the door.
"Mrs. Lu, I want to exchange a live chicken from you." A younger military wife was standing outside the door.
"Ayi just came back and cleaned up the three chickens." Su Jin stepped aside. The military wife looked at her embarrassedly, "Sister-in-law, if you clean up, I won't want it. We'll be entertaining guests in a few days, and the cleaned chicken won't last that long."
