As the sky brightened, the villagers got up and prepared to have breakfast, ready to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy New Year's goods during the day. In a dozen days, it would be time for the mountains to be closed due to heavy snow.
Su Jin heard the noise outside the house and hurriedly got dressed. There was a kang in the room, which was very warm.
"Su Zhiqing, good morning." Lu Shiyi stood at the kitchen door and looked at her. "I've made breakfast. I'll take you to the Zhiqing point later to gather. Today, I'll go shopping with you at the supply and marketing cooperative."
Su Jin smiled politely: "I... want to learn how to cook, I can't let you do it alone."
Lu Shiyi nodded and agreed: "Except when I have a mission, I will come back every day."
After the two of them quickly finished breakfast, Su Jin was about to leave with her backpack on her back when she was stopped by Lu Shiyi.
"Do you know how to get to the educated youth camp? I put the key to my house in my bag. I can accompany you back today. From now on, I will go to work and you will be home alone. When I come back in the evening, I will teach you how to use the stove."
Lu Shiyi also came back from a big city. Everyone in the city used gas stoves, and very few people used stoves.
"Please take care of me in the future!" Su Jin felt that Lu Shiyi was easy to get along with. In this era, soldiers were the most trustworthy.
"Let me help you carry your schoolbag first. The road ahead is all dirt roads, so you should always watch your step." Lu Shiyi had to admit that the dirt road was uneven in many places. Su Jin almost tripped several times when she followed him here yesterday.
Lu Shiyi held Su Jin's schoolbag in his right hand and led Su Jin to the educated youth point in front. The other nine people had bruises under their eyes.
Wang Dahong did not sleep well that night. The educated youth site was close to the back mountain. Although it was much more convenient to collect firewood or go into the mountains, he could hear chirping sounds from deep in the dense forest at night.
The educated youth came from big cities and none of them had ever experienced such a night. Wang Dahong and his friends almost did not sleep all night.
"Xiao Jin, did you sleep well last night?" Wang Dahong looked at Su Jin, who was wearing a light gray woolen hat with two balls of wool hanging on the back of the top, a green double-breasted cotton jacket, black work cotton pants, a light gray woolen scarf around her neck, and a pair of cotton gloves hanging on her chest. She was dressed exactly like a child from a working-class family in the city.
"I slept well. Did you sleep well, sister?" Su Jin left Lu Shiyi's side. He stood not far away with his backpack.
Wang Dahong and the others looked at Lu Shiyi carrying the schoolbag that Su Jin was carrying when he came over, and their eyes flashed slightly. What they discussed last night was correct, this guy must have taken a fancy to Su Jin.
Liu Ying saw that Su Jin didn't pay attention to his actions, and lamented that Su Jin was still young and had not yet opened up to feelings.
"Xiao Jin, we have to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy things today. Lin Teng said that we have to buy things for the New Year as well," Wang Dahong reminded Su Jin.
As Su Jin took her little hands out of her sleeves, she felt a chill and put on the gloves hanging on her chest to warm herself up.
"Xiao Jin's eyes are like those of a deer," Liu Ying shook her head helplessly. "You're almost wrapped up like a ball. What are you going to do when it snows in a few days?"
Su Jin spread her hands and said, "Luckily it's winter, I've been hiding in the house."
After listening to Su Jin, Lu Shiyi thought about setting up a few traps in the back mountain to get more prey for the winter.
The two of them stayed in the yard during the winter and were rarely seen by outsiders.
"Are you okay staying at the Lu family?" Lu Shan asked, concerned about Su Jin's situation. "The team leader just mentioned that we can go to the village to borrow grain tomorrow. We can exchange the money and notes we got from the educated youth for grain."
Su Jinlu's eyes lit up: "I want to buy food first. My parents gave me a lot of food coupons."
"Let's try to use less money. This place is too far from home. Even if we mail the money, it will take a long time." Lu Shan whispered, "My parents said that the mountains here are closed for a long time due to heavy snow, so the correspondence is very slow."
Su Jin was secretly happy. It was a good thing that her family couldn't communicate with each other often. If they did, the fact that her parents were away might not be hidden.
Before going to the countryside, she took care of all the affairs at home so that no one would send her letters.
The team leader and Lin Teng came to the gate of the educated youth site together and said that there was an ox cart heading to the county town in front of the village gate.
"The oxcart will pick you up at the supply and marketing cooperative entrance at 3 p.m. Newly arrived educated youth, listen up! According to past experience, it's going to snow in a dozen days, so we'll all be spending the Spring Festival indoors," the team leader explained. "You're not from Northeast China, so you don't know these things."
Su Jin became worried after hearing what the captain said. She was from the south and was a little afraid of the cold. Since she came to live here, she was thinking about how to adapt to the environment here.
After the team leader finished talking to Lin Teng, he led the newly arrived educated youth to the place where they would board the ox carts.
"The village's oxcarts stop here at 8:30 a.m. on market days. In winter, they return at 4 p.m., and in summer, they return to the village at 4:30 p.m.," the team leader instructed. "Oxcarts cost 8 cents per person, but the villagers are reluctant to spend money, so they walk to the supply and marketing cooperative in town."
The educated youth received subsidies for going to the countryside. Except for a few extremely well-off families who sent the subsidies back home, the rest of the people kept them for themselves.
Parents were worried that the educated youth would be wronged, and every family wanted their children to be better off.
Most of the educated youth paid the fees. Lu Shiyi handed the backpack to Su Jin while no one was paying attention, and reminded him to be careful when entering the city. When everything was over, he should go to the armed forces department next to the post office to find him and go home together.
Su Jin sat next to Lu Shan and listened to the three of them talk about what they saw and heard at the educated youth site yesterday. Some of the older educated youth looked at Su Jin.
"Su Zhiqing, did you know Minister Lu before?" Qi Ning, the female educated youth across from her, felt uncomfortable. She noticed that the four new female educated youths were getting along well, and was thinking about sowing discord between them so that Lu Shiyi would see her good side. "Minister Lu is away from home almost every day since he came to the village."
