As New Year's Day of 1970 began, snowflakes were floating in the sky and the farm was quiet. Every household stayed at home to celebrate New Year's Day. Wu Jun and Liu Yunshan happily hugged their eldest grandson, while their eldest son and his wife were cooking in the kitchen.
The elders arranged for weapons personnel from the northwest to come. Wu Yaozhong, the eldest son of Wu Bu, was the captain responsible for their safety. This time he brought his wife and children, and his 5-year-old grandson Wu Lianjin also came.
The two elderly people, who had not seen their grandson for nearly three years, always had smiles on their faces.
"Dad, I'll go to the Lu Group later and ask my men about going to the Excalibur." Wu Yaozhong asked Wu Jun hurriedly, "I want the team members to pass the assessment. Each team will send their strongest players. In order to compete for a spot, it is very likely that they will not be able to squeeze in."
Wu Jun looked at Wu Yaozhong for a long time and asked him, "If you weren't so old, would you want to go in too?"
Wu Yaozhong scratched the back of his head and said, "Dad, I didn't establish the Excalibur team back then. Lu Shiyi was lucky enough to be one of the first members to join the Excalibur team."
"Excalibur is a glorious place, but it's also the place where the newest members are the fastest." Liu Yunshan came out of the kitchen and complained after hearing her son's words, "Xiaojin hasn't been able to sleep well in the past few years. I think it's better for you to be outside."
Wu Yaozhong looked at his mother with a foolish smile. He had less time to spend with his mother in recent years. Looking at his mother's gray hair, even his wife asked him whether he should be transferred back from the northwest.
"Mom, those are all fought over by the young people." Wu Yaozhong put his arm around her shoulders. "Xiao Li asked me on the way back if I should be transferred back to take care of you and Dad."
"I still have five years before I retire. Let's keep Pangpang at home this time. The schooling over there isn't as good as here." Wu Jun reached out and touched Wu Lianjin's little head. "You'll be able to go to school in the spring. You can be transferred back in two years. Your mother and I will gradually step back."
Wu Lianjin looked at his parents. At their home in the northwest, Wu Yaozhong and Huang Li had mentioned that they wanted him to stay with Wu Jun and Liu Yunshan.
"Dad, Mom, we thought so before. We have already taken back Pangpang's clothes. We wanted to discuss it with you before leaving." Huang Li came out of the kitchen with braised fish in her right hand.
Wu Yaozhong echoed his wife's words: "Dad, Mom, the situation is even worse over there. There's not even a kindergarten in the family compound, let alone an elementary school."
"It takes more than an hour to walk to primary school every day. Moreover, the teachers there are not very good. Some educated youth didn't even graduate from junior high school," Huang Li said helplessly. "Some of the family members only graduated from high school and forced the children to study at home."
"Okay!" Liu Yunshan agreed immediately. "Leave Pang Pang to me. Yunfeng and Xiaojin are both junior high school teachers. They're taking care of children on the farm now. Wouldn't it be better if they could send Pang Pang over later?"
Huang Li's eyes lit up after hearing this. Yun Feng is a special teacher in Northeast Province and the head teacher of the third grade of a junior high school in the military region. Her teaching level must be good.
"Mom, why isn't Sister Yunfeng at work?" Wu Yaozhong asked suspiciously, "I don't think Political Commissar Lin has bad thoughts."
"Most junior high school teachers here have been targeted, and to avoid bringing trouble to their families, they've had to resign and stay home," Liu Yunshan sighed. "The situation is getting increasingly tense. If you were in the northwestern border area, you could have an easier time."
"When will the elder return to the capital?" Wu Yaozhong sat opposite Wu Jun, while Liu Yunshan and Huang Li, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, went to the kitchen to cook.
"Why are you asking this? There are many things that cannot be said casually." Wu Jun warned his son.
Wu Yaozhong reached out and patted his son's head: "Chubby, go to the kitchen to find your mother first. Grandpa and I have something to say."
After Wu Jinlian left, Wu Yaozhong informed Wu Jun of the situation in the northwest, and even established several farms on the back hills of the military region, where many former leaders were stationed.
"There are a lot of elderly people on the farm, as there are in every place. Some are provided for protection, while others are involved with the outside world." Wu Jun sighed, "What's the difference between the two farms around you and this one?"
"The two farms are short of food every year, and the logistics department prepares a lot of food supplies. This year, there are disasters everywhere, but it's different for the old people. Because of the drought this year, there is less food. The farm has no harvest, and they rarely eat rice even during the Chinese New Year." Wu Yaozhong informed Wu Jun of the specific situation.
Wu Jun sat in the chair in silence. The situation Wu Yaozhong described occurred in many places.
"Dad, I see that every household here grows vegetables and can even eat greens in winter. But it's not the case over here. Even having water for bathing is a problem." Wu Yaozhong smiled bitterly.
"Life is tough, and it's up to you to change it. Shi Yi has joined the farm, and he's found a lot of people based on the situation here," Wu Jun told Wu Yaozhong. "Old Wei and Old Song live together, so you can ask the two old men during the New Year."
Wu Yaozhong grinned and said, "Dad, I'll take advantage of my return to ask more questions and see if I can help solve the problem on both farms."
Cooking was in full swing in the canteen. The young soldiers put boxes of food into boxes with thermal bags placed around them, preparing to deliver meals to the elderly people one by one.
Su Jin prepared a lot of stewed meat in the kitchen, and according to Lu Shiyi's instructions, she planned to send one portion to each old man.
"Grandpa told a few old men not to eat fatty meat." Lu Shiyi said, holding a list.
Su Jin packed the lunch boxes according to the list. Zong Li and Wang Yuan borrowed a tricycle. The cafeteria had placed two torn quilts, which were just right for transporting the lunch boxes.
"Deliver the name on the lunch box according to its name. Don't make a mistake!" Lu Shiyi reminded Zong Li.
