Chapter 44 New Year's Day

On the first day of the Lunar New Year in 1969, Su Jin was sleeping in a warm room wrapped in a quilt. She heard the team members shouting slogans outside the yard. When she opened her eyes, she was dazzled. Just as she was about to get up, her body fell limply on the bed. Thinking of someone last night, she slammed the bed hard.

"Wife, why didn't you call me when you woke up?" Lu Shiyi walked in from the kitchen with breakfast.

There is a regulation in the military district that married officers do not have to attend morning exercises on the first day of the Lunar New Year and can resume training on the second day.

"Why... don't you go to training?" Su Jin's cheeks flushed. Seeing him suddenly appear in the bedroom, the scene of last night flashed through her mind from time to time. "It's good to go to training to blow off some energy."

Su Jin spoke the second half of the sentence very quietly, but Lu Shiyi heard it. A smile appeared on the corner of his mouth. He reached out and put the breakfast on the kang table and moved it in front of her.

"After breakfast, let's take a break. Everyone will rest at home today, and we won't start visiting relatives and friends tomorrow to celebrate the New Year." Lu Shiyi and Su Jin talked about the hospital's New Year tradition. "When we have children, I will take them to visit the old leader."

Su Jin's cheeks were red as she heard Lu Shiyi talking about the child and angrily hit him.

"Wife, when we were resting last night, was the place we went to really where you...were staying?" Lu Shiyi looked at Su Jin and asked carefully.

Su Jin looked at Lu Shiyi seriously and said, "I cut my finger while cooking last time, and blood dripped onto the walnut carving my mother gave me, and this place appeared. I see that it's all food and medicine."

Lu Shiyi hummed: "Wife, besides me, you can't tell anyone else about it. Will it hurt you if you take out those things?"

Su Jin didn't know why the space dragged Lu Shiyi into it after they became an official couple. She was shocked at the time and hadn't asked Xiao Lingling about it.

"Master, I'll keep an eye on the male master. If he dares to reveal a single word about this dimension, I'll make him lose this memory," Little Bell suddenly appeared. "He can't enter this dimension. The male master is wearing a medium, so you can find him at any time."

"Husband, I saw this term used in the books in the house." Su Jin smiled slightly, "People from the big families in Shanghai also call him that."

"Call me Ah Yi in front of outsiders, and call me that in private." Lu Shiyi felt warm all over when he heard her call him husband. "Wife, you haven't answered my question yet."

"There won't be any harm. Those things were bought on the platform. I just learned it. The prices are the same as those in the supply and marketing cooperative, but you don't need a ticket." Su Jin told Lu Shiyi happily.

Lu Shiyi hummed: "As long as it doesn't hurt you, I can let you use it without worry."

"Hubby, let's send some things back to the capital. I wonder what the situation is like back home." Su Jin learned from the military wives who came from the capital that the situation there was not very good. There was a shortage of food, vegetables, and even meat. "Many of the sisters-in-law mailed food home from here."

"We have to wait until the third day of the Lunar New Year to send it by mail. Our home is in a military area, so we can send it by military mail." Lu Shiyi told Su Jin, "We can't send too much by mail, as military mail will be inspected."

Su Jin ate the steamed bun handed to her by Lu Shiyi and drank a mouthful of porridge, and her stomach finally warmed up.

"I served out yesterday's cold dishes, heated up the steamed buns, and cooked the rice into porridge." Lu Shiyi found that the New Year's Eve dinner made by Su Jin was half the amount extra. He remembered that Lu's mother mentioned that the custom in the south was not to cook for three days before the New Year.

"Hubby, you're awesome!" Su Jin smiled at him. "My family has a rule that we don't cook for the first three days. We only eat leftovers from the New Year's Eve dinner. We also can't take out the trash, otherwise it's like throwing away wealth."

"Celebrate the New Year according to your family's rules. There are no rules in the capital," Lu Shiyi nodded in agreement. "If we celebrate the New Year at home, we won't be able to gather before the third day of the New Year. Everyone has to go to the army."

"Honey, let's go out and exchange things for Mom and Dad. I heard from Sister Liu that there's a big market in the west of the city where you can buy a lot of things with money." Su Jin looked at Lu Shiyi and reminded him, "There's no big market in the capital anymore. You can only go to department stores or supply and marketing cooperatives to buy things. If we can mail some things, we'll do that."

On the morning of the second day of the Lunar New Year, Lu Shiyi went into the mountains with the team for training. If he could hunt prey in the deep mountains, he would use it to provide snacks for his family members.

"Okay!" Lu Shiyi listened to Su Jin's arrangements, reached out and opened the bedside table, took out an envelope and a passbook and handed them to her: "Xiao Jin, my allowance and mission subsidy."

Su Jin put down the chopsticks and steamed bun in his hand, opened the passbook and took a look, looking at the amount on the passbook in surprise.

There was actually 12,000 yuan in his passbook in 1969. He was definitely from a wealthy family.

"Ayi, this money..." Su Jin opened the envelope and saw two thousand yuan inside. "It's too much..."

"I haven't spent a single cent of my allowances since I joined the army. My clothes, shoes, and all my supplies were all provided by the army," Lu Shiyi explained, explaining the origins of his savings. "I also receive quite a bit of mission allowances, which are generally around 400-1000 yuan each time. Apart from sending money every month to the families of my fallen or seriously injured comrades, I have virtually no other use for my money."

"Husband, if you give me all this money, how can you help your comrades? I will take the passbook from now on, and you can take the mission allowance yourself. A man cannot be without money." Su Jin stretched out her hand and waved the envelope, "Would you like to mail some food to those comrades? Some of it cannot be bought with money."

"No need. My comrades and their families who received money have written to me, asking me not to send it anymore." Lu Shiyi shook his head. "If you mail money, people will target you. Everyone needs to be careful in the next three or four years."

Lu Shiyi can protect himself, but it is different for those military families and martyrs' families who accept money. The local armed forces cannot take care of them at all times, and they will be targeted if they are not careful.

The martyrs' families live with their children. They have never thought about remarrying. Under the protection of the comrades from the armed forces who visit them at any time, they can live a stable life in the village. The people from the pigeon committee will not easily go there to cause trouble.

"Now I'm exchanging food, meat, and dry goods for the elders. I bought 10 bottles of Moutai. I told them it would be fine if I brought some from home." Su Jin put away the envelope and passbook and continued eating breakfast. "It would be great if I could buy a whole leg of lamb."

There are lamb chops on Su Jin’s space platform. If anyone is selling lamb legs, they can be mailed with 5 kilograms of lamb chops.

"Wife, let's eat first and then go take a look. We can't fight over what was taken out of your space." Lu Shiyi reminded Su Jin, "You have to be more careful when doing things. We have many hunters here, but few sheep. On the contrary, there is more venison."

Su Jin frowned. She was still thinking about eating grilled lamb chops.
