After the summer harvest, everyone in the family compound had lost a lot of weight, and even the fish in the river halfway up the mountain were only small fry left.
Su Jin generously shared recipes. Many families made stewed fish with guinea pigs. Not only did they not have to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy meat like in previous years, but they could ensure that every family member had meat every day during the summer harvest.
"Wife, what's for today?" Lu Shiyi smelled the spicy flavor and hurriedly opened the lunch box.
Su Jin opened the lid of the porcelain basin and found Maoxuewang in it. Lu Shiyi heard that the neighboring village was slaughtering pigs, so he went there specifically to buy a lot of pork and offal.
"Duck blood, tripe, and bean curd sheets. Even though they're from pork, they're still delicious." Su Jin also put bean sprouts, cabbage, and green vegetables underneath.
The three families started eating immediately. Wu Jun praised Su Jin's cooking skills, and Liu Yunshan agreed.
"Sister-in-law, next time you ask me to cook, these dishes are really delicious." Liu Yunshan said happily.
Wu Jun also gave a thumbs up, and the three men decided to go fishing later.
"Let's have boiled fish tomorrow." Wu Jun, Lin Zitao and Lu Shiyi suggested.
Tomorrow is the official end of the summer harvest. After all the grain is prepared, we can send it to the basketball court to dry it and store it in the warehouse.
Su Jin sat next to Lu Shiyi and heard everyone's praise.
"Xiao Jin, I'll go fishing with Lao Lin later," Lu Shiyi whispered to Su Jin. "There's a market outside the compound after dark, and we can go shopping."
Many family members are planning to go back early and have breakfast before going. The family members are very obedient and the children have started their summer vacation.
After everyone finished lunch, each family packed up their lunch dishes and went to the staff quarters.
Su Jin walked slowly in front. Lin Yan was carrying a lunch box and happily said that they would go eat chilled watermelon later.
The family members hurried after Su Jin. Some of the children were in Su Jin's class. In this year's final exam, the family members saw that the children's math scores were very good. Even the worst students passed the math test. This result made many children envious.
"Teacher Su, I'd like to ask if you've given us any summer homework?" The family member looked at Su Jin, noting that the children usually had plenty of homework. "They have to do a lot of homework every day, supposedly to consolidate their learning, but I didn't expect the children to be so self-motivated this year."
"I'm feeling heavier now, so I didn't leave any summer homework. I just mentioned that there will be an exam on the first day of school." Su Jin explained as they walked, "Everyone who does well on the exam will get a piece of candy as a reward."
After hearing this, the family members burst into laughter, and the children fought hard for the candy.
"With Teacher Su teaching, we're all very confident about the children." The family members took the lunch box from Lin Yan. "Teacher Su, we'll help you get it home. Let's go shopping together tonight. It's already the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and the Ghost Festival is coming soon."
After Su Jin returned home, she put all the dirty dishes into the dishwasher in the space. She then began to clean up the kitchen and organize all the necessary things.
Su Jin took out a notebook and wrote down what she needed.
At 6:30 in the evening, Lu Shiyi came back from outside and saw two large bowls of cold noodles, some pickled vegetables, and some cold-mixed vegetables on the counter. He put the things on a tray and brought them into the dining room.
"Ayi, when did you make the tray? This is much more convenient." Su Jin praised Lu Shiyi.
Lu Shiyi picked up some cold dishes for her. Every time he cooked, Su Jin saw that he had a good appetite, and the smile on her face gradually increased.
"Xiao Jin, I'll clean up the dishes later." Lu Shiyi came back today and found the kitchen clean. He reiterated his request. "Teacher Su, I didn't give the children summer homework this time. Instead, I made them study harder."
"When I was in school, I didn't like doing holiday homework either. The teacher assigned it before the holiday, and I had no choice but to complete it carefully." Su Jin spread her hands, "I thought at the time, when I become a teacher in the future, I must make sure that students study voluntarily, not just complete homework for the sake of completing it."
Lu Shiyi stared at Su Jin for a long time and gave her a thumbs up to praise her.
In school, many teachers have assigned double the summer homework due to poor final exam results, making many children even more tired of studying.
"Wife, I also finished my homework last when I was in school." Lu Shiyi chuckled, "After joining the army, I felt that I had gotten rid of my affectation.
"Hurry up and eat. The sisters-in-law said that there will be more things at the market these days after the summer harvest." Su Jin reminded Lu Shiyi, "The sisters-in-law also mentioned that the more things there are at the market, the worse it will be to live near the county town. You have to sell things to earn your living expenses for the year."
Lu Shiyi hummed and said, "My sisters-in-law are right. If there is more food, the harvest will definitely not be very good."
The team members went to a nearby county for training and found that many villages had grown potatoes and sweet potatoes on the edge of the sky. They estimated that they would need to rely on these two as staple food in the future.
"I also planted sweet potatoes and stir-fried the sweet potato leaves." Su Jin wanted to save as much food as possible.
Lu Shiyi nodded. He planted a lot more vegetables, hoping to store more for his family before the weather got cold.
"The summer harvest is over, and I started looking at firewood to prepare for winter." Lu Shiyi reminded her to start preparing winter supplies.
After dinner, Lu Shiyi accompanied Su Jin for a walk. Family members dragged the team members out to the market. Some people had already bought everything and were carrying sacks of food home.
As Su Jin and Lu Shiyi approached the door, they heard the bustling hawking sounds outside. There were more stalls than before. Villagers from several nearby villages were nearing the end of their summer harvest and brought things they had prepared at home to exchange.
Some people brought fish or loaches that they had caught, or prey that they had dug traps in the mountains. Each one was the work of the children during the summer vacation, and some were wild fruits that they had picked from the mountains.
It was Su Jin's first time to visit the market after the summer harvest and she discovered many little surprises.
As the two stepped out of the door, many family members greeted them. Su Jin found that many villagers from the Fourth Brigade had also come. Lu Shiyi didn't want to see what they were selling.
The spots at the entrance of the family compound are reserved for grabs, and there is no uniform price for everyone to buy things. The things sold by the villagers of the Fourth Brigade are not only the most expensive of all the stalls in the market, but the things they sell are not the freshest.
When the villagers saw Lu Shiyi, they all wanted to greet them, but Su Jin dragged him to another stall to look at things.
"Xiaoyi, you haven't been back to the village to live for a while." They just stopped in front of a stall. Su Jin was picking corn when he heard the stall owner next to him trying to build a relationship with him.
"My wife is pregnant. We are both registered in the military region. She also has a job, so we really don't have time to go to the village to help." Lu Shiyi said with a stern face, "Follow the rules in the market and don't try to build relationships here."
Lu Shiyi heard Lin Zitao explain in advance that he had been in the Fourth Brigade for several years and would go on a mission before every action, and he hardly ever participated in the summer harvest market.
