Duoxi's hand was injured, so he couldn't peel the crayfish. Tonight, his three older brothers peeled the crayfish for him. Gao Guojing would also occasionally peel some for him to eat.
When the lobsters in the basin were gone, the meat was gone too. Not satisfied, Duoxi secretly reached out his uninjured hand and took the shells from the basin in front of Duoshou, licking them with gusto while echoing his second brother's words.
Duoxi: "Uncle, we should set up more traps and catch more crayfish. They're delicious."
If you ask him why he didn't take the shell from his favorite second brother, Duolu, the answer is that his second brother licked it too clean, and the shells from his eldest and third brothers were more flavorful.
Duofu noticed his little movements and slapped his hand away: "You can eat it again tomorrow, but forget about the shells and don't lick them."
Under his watchful eye, Duoxi reluctantly gave up licking the shell, though his little eyes would occasionally dart to it, his drooling expression vividly displayed on his chubby little face.
Duo Shou, who can't handle too much greasy food, prefers aquatic creatures and readily vouched for the freshness of crayfish.
Duo Shou: "Uncle brought back the traps. We'll take care of cleaning the crayfish. We can put in a few more, no problem. It would be even better if we could have twice as many crayfish as today."
After tasting the delicious crayfish, Duofu couldn't help but support his younger brothers' request: "I'll go make a fish trap with Uncle later."
Goodness, they've got their eyes on the crayfish in that ditch. Hopefully, there are enough of them, otherwise these little guys will definitely chase them all the way to the far reaches of the field to catch them, just like they chase field frogs.
To ensure they could eat crayfish the next day, the uncle and nephews really went all out. After cleaning up the table, they all started making crayfish traps. Even though Duoxi's hand was injured, he insisted on squeezing in to help pass the tools.
The group worked overtime to make several fish traps and put them in the ditch before they came back to take a shower and go to sleep.
When Yu Rujia woke up and washed up the next morning, they had already taken the trap back. The crayfish were crawling all over the place near the hand pump well, and there was nowhere for her to put her feet.
Duofu went to school, while Gao Guojing, along with his two nephews Duolu and Duoshou, were diligently washing crayfish, their faces beaming with smiles.
Duoxi pulled Duoji, who was trying to get into the pile of crayfish, from the other side.
Even from a distance, you could hear Duoxi trying to persuade the little guy: "You can't go over there, the crayfish will eat people. We can only eat them after they've been washed."
The little guy didn't appreciate it and stubbornly kept kicking his chubby little legs toward the hand pump.
He clearly remembered eating these shrimp last night; they were so delicious! He hadn't had enough before his dad stopped giving him any more. This time, he wanted to eat as many as possible while his dad wasn't around.
Yu Rujia: "Duoxi, take Duoji to his uncle's place. If he can't see the crayfish, he won't want to come over."
Duo Xi thought this was indeed a good idea, so despite the little fat boy's struggles, she carried him to Gao Shujing's side.
Duolu's side was also restless. The crayfish were too energetic. As soon as he caught them, other crayfish would crawl out. After catching them a few times, he simply stopped catching them. He just wanted to make sure that the cleaned crayfish didn't crawl around everywhere.
The cleaned crayfish were placed in a tall bucket, making it difficult for them to climb out.
Duolu didn't want to catch crayfish, but he also didn't want them to crawl too far, so he found a little helper.
Duolu: "Steamed buns, mantou, come here and kick the crayfish that crawled out back in."
The steamed buns and mantou were a little scared of the clawing crayfish and didn't dare to kick it. They just barked at the crayfish, trying to scare it back with their voices.
Doro called out again, but the two little guys remained standing on all fours a short distance away, persisting in using their voices to intimidate the crayfish that was crawling out.
Unfortunately, the crayfish seemed to see through their fierce exterior but weak interior, and were not intimidated by the noise at all, continuing to happily crawl out on their own.
Seeing that the two puppies wouldn't budge, Duolu was so angry that he wanted to throw the steamed buns and mantou into the pile of crayfish. They were so useless, not like the dogs he raised at all.
Gao Guojing couldn't bear to see the two puppies being enslaved by him, so he pleaded for them: "Forget it, they're just puppies a few months old, what could they know? We'll catch them later."
However, Gao Guojing's words were quickly proven wrong. Duoshou stopped eating crayfish, looked up at the two puppies, and casually tossed out a sentence.
Duo Shou: "Steamed buns and mantou, kick the crayfish that crawled out of the basin back in, or I'll send you to Duo Ji's place."
Duo Shou was meticulous; he was sure that the steamed buns and flower rolls wouldn't escape Duo Ji's notice.
The innocent puppy in Gao Guojing's eyes immediately changed its attitude. Although still scared, it still forced itself to stick out its little paw to kick the crayfish, but quickly pulled its paw back.
However, the crayfish were indeed kicked back a little distance.
Perhaps seeing that the crayfish hadn't hurt them, the two puppies slowly began to probe, and actually kicked the crayfish that had crawled out back one by one.
After they found the pattern, they played with the crayfish like they were playing football.
After kicking the crayfish, the two puppies had no more toys, so they stared intently at the basin, as if they were about to kick the crayfish back in the moment they crawled out.
Gao Guojing watched in disbelief. He would occasionally play with the puppies, but he only treated them as ordinary dogs. He never imagined that they would be so smart and able to follow instructions.
Duolu's little face was full of pride: "The steamed buns and mantou are amazing. They can understand everything we say."
Gao Guojing stared blankly and said, "They are indeed quite powerful. With some training, they might be even more powerful than the military dogs in the army."
Doro asked, not understanding, "What is a military dog?"
Gao Guojing: "Military dogs are used to catch bad guys."
Duolu glanced at the puppies staring intently at the basin and said confidently, "Huajuan and Mantou will bark at strangers and chase rabbits and pheasants. When they get a little older, they'll be able to catch bad guys."
Kao Kuo-Ching: "It's different. We also have to teach them to distinguish between good and bad people..." followed by a long list of dog training methods.
When Yu Rujia came out after breakfast, the others were still washing up.
Looking at the seashells in the basin, Yu Rujia instructed, "Guojing, call me when you're done washing the crayfish, and I'll teach you how to peel the seashells."
The uncle and his nephews were so engrossed in eating crayfish that they had completely forgotten about the seashells they had brought back the day before.
When Yu Rujia brought this up, everyone's eyes turned to the seashells in another basin.
Duoshou glanced back at the crayfish in the basin and said considerately, "Uncle Guojing, go peel the shellfish. Duolu and I will share the rest of the crayfish."
Duolu loves to eat crayfish and is also very interested in shellfish that he has never tried before: "Uncle Guojing, hurry up, don't keep Auntie waiting."
Gao Guojing readily stood up: "Okay, Sister Rujia, I'll come over and peel the shellfish right now, don't leave."
