Yu Rujia considered that she would need to buy a lot of things in town, so she brought two baskets with her to carry small items, which she would then tie to the back of her bicycle along with the larger items.
The children were in a hurry to buy comic books, and Gao Guojing followed them in carrying Dorje, whose little head was drooping. She was left to take apart the baskets.
When she entered the bookstore, the children had already picked out a thick stack of comic books, which cost more than thirty yuan.
No wonder the people in the team don't buy comic books for their kids. They're so expensive, only families with some savings can afford to buy them.
Gao Guojing also paid for a complete set of the Four Great Classical Novels, along with the comic books that Duofu and his friends read.
Gao Guojing's income in the brigade was the same as Gao Shujing's. When he first came, he thought about handing over his income and keeping only five yuan for himself.
Gao Guojing believed that since he ate and lived at home and the food at home was so good, if you really wanted to calculate the money, all his income wouldn't be enough.
Yu Rujia believes that Gao Guojing came to be a nanny, and when Gao Shujing is not around, he takes care of most of the housework with the little ones.
Other nannies are paid for their meals, accommodation, and wages, but Gao Guojing not only works for free, but also has to bring his own food and pay out of pocket.
And although their family eats well, many of their ingredients come from the mountains;
Most of the meat was obtained by Gao Guojing;
Having a full-time nanny at home who pays out of pocket, provides food, and is available 24/7 is a huge win for them.
After some discussion, Gao Guojing handed over all his work points earned in the team and his monthly salary of five yuan, while he kept the remaining dividends for himself, which meant he had at least a dozen yuan of pocket money every month.
He has saved some money after living here for more than a year.
Even so, he still had to spend nearly fifty yuan at once, which was enough to make him wince.
Gao Guojing sighed, "Luckily, your uncle and aunt are here. If it were just me, I really couldn't afford to raise you little ones. It's too expensive."
The money-grubbing Duolu and Duoxi hugged their comic books and chuckled foolishly.
The equally expensive but clever Duofu and Duoshou put the books into the basket that Yu Rujia had just brought in, thoughtfully including Gao Guojing's Four Great Classical Novels as well.
Duofu: "Uncle Guojing, you paid for this, so we'll carry the things."
Duolu finally stopped grinning foolishly and picked up Duoshou's basket, saying, "I'll carry it too."
Gao Guojing nodded in satisfaction: "At least you guys have some conscience."
The group left the bookstore with a lot of purchases.
Passing by a popsicle stand, Yu Rujia called out, "Come on, Auntie will buy you popsicles, one for each of you, and you can choose your favorite flavor."
When it comes to food, even if Duolu is carrying a comic book, he is always the fastest. As soon as she finished speaking, the little guy had already climbed onto the counter and was looking inside with his big eyes.
The remaining children then crouched down to look inside.
Having regained some energy, little Dorje saw his older brothers run off, struggled in Gao Guojing's arms, and said in his babyish voice, "Uncle, get down, we're leaving."
Gao Guojing then placed the chubby boy on the ground.
As soon as he touched the floor, little Dorje took off running towards his older brothers, his wobbly little legs not hindering his speed at all.
The little guy quickly ran to his older brothers and tried to look into the cabinet, mimicking their actions.
Unfortunately, the little one was too short to reach the cabinet, so he jumped up in frustration, but quickly landed back on the ground, still unable to see the popsicles inside.
The little guy was unhappy and turned to Yu Rujia with a pitiful look: "Mom, I want to see, I want to see."
Before Yu Rujia could react, Gao Guojing picked up the chubby little dumpling and said, "Come here, let Uncle hold you."
Suddenly his gaze was drawn upwards, and Dorje excitedly waved his chubby little hands, craning his neck to look into the cabinet, finally able to see what was inside.
But because of the large movement, the little guy almost fell off.
Gao Guojing quickly reached out his other hand to steady Dorje's small body: "Dorje, don't rush, take your time."
A group of people looked at it for a while but couldn't figure out the flavor. The flavor wasn't listed on the packaging, and the less knowledgeable kids couldn't tell the difference at all.
Duoxi raised her chubby little face to look at the saleswoman and asked in a soft, sweet voice, "Miss, what flavors of popsicles do you have?"
Duoxi's adorable appearance amazed the sales clerk, who then improved her service significantly, introducing the product with a beaming smile.
Salesperson: "Little brother, we have sweet popsicles, mung bean popsicles, red bean popsicles, and cream popsicles. Which one would you like?"
Duoxi frowned, unable to make a decision. She wanted them all, so she turned to Yu Rujia and asked, "Auntie, can I take one of each?"
Yu Rujia: "No, you can only take one flavor."
Duofu's mind raced and he came up with an idea: "We can each take one flavor and then take turns eating them, so we can try all the flavors of popsicles."
Duo Shou immediately offered his support: "Good idea, I agree to do it this way."
When it comes to food, Duolu's mind works exceptionally fast: "But there are seven of us, and only four flavors, that's not enough to go around! How about we buy two of each kind of popsicle?"
It can only be said that the little guy had a pretty good idea, but unfortunately Yu Rujia did not give him his wish: "You four brothers can take turns eating it, and each of you can take a different flavor."
Upon hearing this, Duofu knew what to do: "Miss, one of each flavor, please."
Yu Rujia: "I want one cream flavor and one mung bean flavor, Guojing, which one do you want?"
Kao Kuo-Ching: "I want a red bean flavored one."
Salesperson: "Comrade, cream popsicles are five cents each, and other popsicles are three cents each. You ordered two cream popsicles and five other popsicles, which will cost you a total of twenty-five cents."
Yu Rujia paid the money, and all seven members of the family received their own popsicles.
Yu Rujia first opened a mung bean flavored popsicle and handed it to Xiao Duoji, who was still in Gao Guojing's arms, so that he could hold it and eat it himself. She then ate the cream flavored popsicle herself.
Impatient Duolu took a big bite of the mung bean popsicle in his hand. Eating a popsicle on a hot day was truly refreshing.
After taking a bite of the popsicle, Doro's eyes narrowed with satisfaction, and he exclaimed, "So refreshing, so refreshing!"
Duoxi had just taken a bite of her red bean popsicle when she heard him say this, and she leaned her little face closer and said, "Second brother, let me try some."
Duolu held the mung bean popsicle to his lips, and after he took a bite, he said, "I'm going to bite you now." With that, he took a big bite, and half of the popsicle was gone.
Duo Xi was dumbfounded. Looking at Duo Lu's mouth and then at her own popsicle, she felt a little wronged. Why was her second brother's mouth so big?
