After trying various ways of cooking the offal from the Yu family, and having learned some culinary skills from Duo Lu and others, Wei Han wanted to buy a set of offal to cook in a pot and treat the young chefs to a meal.
Captain Huang didn't know what he was thinking, he only knew that the Yu family liked to eat offal, so he advised Wei Hanjie to buy less.
Wei Han only managed to buy half a set of offal, but he bought more bones than he expected.
There's no other way; only the offal, blood, and bones of a whole pig can be freely bought and sold. Everything else, even the scraps, needs to be allocated.
Yu Rujia: "Thank you, Captain. As usual, we'll take all the remaining offal, bones except the head, and pig's blood."
The two pigs were raised for a few more months and grew a bit bigger. Half of their offal still weighed nearly 60 jin (30 kg), their bones weighed more than 30 jin (15 kg), and their blood also weighed nearly 30 jin (15 kg).
They brought three buckets with them when they came from home. Duofu carried one bucket; Duolu and Duoshou carried the water buckets; Duoxi carried the few pounds of meat they had been allocated; and Duoji pulled Xiaoduo along.
A group of people walked home in a lively atmosphere.
Jiang Damei had just finished distributing the meat and chatted with some people. When she parted ways with them, she ran into a group of Yu family members who were returning from distributing the meat.
Jiang Damei looked at the Yu family's children with admiration and said, "I really envy you for having such sensible children. My eldest son disappeared as soon as he came back. He's fifteen or sixteen years old and about to get married, but he's so irresponsible. It's driving me crazy."
Yu Rujia: "What are you worried about? Your eldest son will graduate from high school next year, and then your family will have an extra source of income; in less than two years, we'll bring home a daughter-in-law for you, and you can just wait to hold your grandson."
Erdan and Dawa are both in their first year of high school, and they will be in their second year in the fall.
Jiang Damei sighed, "That boy Da Wa looks just like his father. He's five years older than Duo Fu, but he's not as tall as him. It's uncertain whether he'll be able to find a wife."
Duofu is 1.6 meters tall now, but Dawa is not yet 1.6 meters tall.
Yu Rujia: "The eldest child is in his developmental stage. He can grow for several more years. If you give him more supplements, he will definitely grow a bit more and be taller than his father without any problem."
Jiang Damei: "I think it's difficult. His father isn't tall, and he's his father's biological son. How tall can he be? Do you have any medicine that can directly increase height?"
Wu Shengli is only 1.6 meters tall, about the same height as Duofu.
Jiang Damei wouldn't think that Da Wa, who looks just like Wu Shengli, could get very high.
Yu Rujia: "The best way is through diet. You should spend money on nutrition during this period. If you miss the developmental period, you won't be able to grow taller later."
When Duolu got home, he had just put his things down when he said impatiently, "Auntie, let's make braised meat."
There's nothing we can do; we only make braised meat a few times a year, and everyone's been craving it.
Yu Rujia didn't care. Now there were plenty of ingredients and a few workers to do the work, so she just waited to eat.
Braised meat is indeed delicious.
Yu Rujia: "Okay, you guys figure out the arrangements. Duoshou will add the seasonings."
Duolu happily picked out the pig intestines, pork belly, and half of the pig lungs and put them into an ice bucket. He then instructed his younger brothers to take the rest of the offal and pig trotters to the backyard to clean them.
Duo Shou went to the infirmary to prepare seasonings, while Duo Fu went to the bicycle shed to help Gao Shu Jing with his work.
After several months of recuperation, Wei Hanjie, who had returned to a normal life, came in from outside the courtyard: "Yu Zhiqing, are Duolu and the others there?"
Yu Rujia: "It's in the backyard, you can go there."
Wei Han went into the backyard and saw a group of children washing a large pile of meat by the hand pump: "Are you making a hot pot today?"
Duoxi raised her little face slightly and said proudly, "No, we're making braised meat."
Wei Hanjie ate braised pork at home during the Chinese New Year and still remembers its rich aroma. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough offal, so he couldn't make braised pork after making the pot.
Wei Hanjie used to dislike going into the water because it smelled terrible.
After eating at Yu's restaurant for a few days, I became a loyal fan of offal.
It turns out the sewage wasn't smelly; they just didn't know how to clean it.
After learning from several junior chefs, including Duolu, for a month or two, Wei Han felt that his cooking skills had improved significantly. He wanted to buy more offal and prepare to make pots and grills like the Yu family.
Captain Huang advised him to buy less.
Wei Hanjie was quick-witted. After a little thought, he realized that Captain Huang wanted to leave the wastewater to the Yu family. Thinking of the many people in the Yu family who had been kind to him, he bought half a set of wastewater and took it home.
Wei Hanjie: "That's good. I bought half a set of offal and wanted to invite you over to my place for a hot pot meal."
Dorje was rubbing the sausage with wood ash when he heard someone was inviting him to a hot pot meal. His ears perked up immediately, and he grinned, "Are you inviting me? Do I get some too?"
Normally, the Yu family's children would not eat at other people's houses, but Wei Han was different. He had been learning cooking skills from Duo Lu and Duo Xi for a month or two.
The Yu family children had tasted his cooking; although it wasn't as delicious as their own family's, it was still quite good.
Moreover, the pot is mainly for the soup base, and Wei Hanjie's soup is already quite good.
That's why Dorje asked that question.
Where there's food, there's bound to be some for Du Le. The little guy didn't even bother to drink water anymore, grinned, and revealed a row of tiny, tender baby teeth: "Uncle Wei, can I eat some?"
Duole was young and usually only washed vegetables. He wasn't given the task of washing meat, so Duolu arranged for him to press the pump to draw water from the well.
Duole is strong enough to press the handle without any problem, but he's too short to reach the handle. When it bounces up, the little guy has to lift his chubby little hands to pull the handle down.
As he said this, he stopped pumping water, raised his hands, which were as thick as lotus roots, and held the handle. His chubby little face was full of expectation as he looked at Wei Hanjie.
Upon seeing the adorable little children, Wei Hanjie couldn't help but smile: "We have everything, you're welcome to come and eat."
Seeing that Xiao Baozi was having a hard time using the hand pump, he stepped forward and took the handle: "Duo Le, step aside, let Uncle pump the water."
Duole didn't let go. He tilted his little head back, his chubby little face looking especially cute. He said in a childish voice, "My brothers said that I should do things myself. I want to press the water and fill these basins. I don't need Uncle Wei's help."
Wei Han was surprised that a baby could be so persistent, so he took a step back and gave the position back to Duole.
Wei Han encouraged him, saying, "Uncle Wei underestimated Duole. Duole is much more capable than Uncle Wei imagined. Keep it up, Duole."
The little dumpling, pleased with the affirmation, giggled and jumped up from the ground with a thud, pulling down the high handle. Immediately, clear water flowed from the outlet into the basin, and then the little dumpling repeated the previous action.
The chubby little hands looked clumsy, but the movements were surprisingly skillful. The little guy pulled down the lever with a determined look on his face, and breathed heavily when he released it. It was clear that the little guy had done this job many times before.
Duolu steered the conversation back to the main topic: "Uncle Wei, when are you going to make the pot?"
Wei Hanjie: "How's tonight?"
