Chapter 144 Misfortunes never come singly

After saying goodbye to everyone, I boarded the bus back home. Normally, if a school expel a student, it will notify the parents, but my parents never showed up. Was it because they were disappointed with me? The answer could only be revealed when I returned home.

I felt a little dizzy when I stepped on the land of Dongguan Town. I was very familiar with every tree and grass here. I could walk back home with my eyes closed. This is my hometown, but it is also a place I call "nightmare". I went through so much trouble to get into the city high school just to leave here and never see the classmates who bullied me again.

In the past, when I walked down every street and alley here, I always couldn't help but bend down timidly, for fear of accidentally bumping into Zou Yang and his classmates (in fact, we would bump into them anyway, regardless of whether we bend down or not). But now, I walk with my head held high, with confidence in my eyes, and strides forward on the road. Perhaps, experience can really change a person.

The wide street gradually turned into a narrow path, with low bungalows on both sides of the path. This is an ordinary area in Dongguan Town, and my home is at the end of the path, where there is a peach tree planted at the door. The peach tree was planted by my mother deliberately to block the smoke and dust raised by passing vehicles from drifting into the slightly low wall of my house.

This house was built more than ten years ago at a cost of less than three thousand yuan. Now it is so old that it seems that it can be blown away by a gust of wind. It has long been used to leaking rain in summer and drafts in winter. I am afraid of going home. The closer I get to my home, the more nervous I feel. I push open the half-open door and see a small courtyard, which has been cleaned up by my mother. I don't know if my parents know that I was expelled. The previous majestic momentum disappeared the moment I entered the courtyard, and was replaced by the faces of my parents who expected me to succeed. What kind of disappointed look will they show when they see me? I dare not think about it anymore, and my heart almost jumps out of my chest.

I walked through the yard and came to the main house. I pushed open the flimsy wooden door and unexpectedly found my parents at home. Dad was sitting at the dining table smoking, and Mom was sitting on the sofa wiping tears. Both of them looked sad. My heart sank, but I still said, "Dad, Mom, I'm back."

My mother ignored me, still wiping her tears and sobbing softly. My father looked up at me and said, "Why did you come back without anything?" He obviously knew everything, and I felt even sadder.

"Dad, Mom, I'm sorry." I said softly, not even having the courage to sit down. No matter how brilliant my achievements were, they were worthless in front of them. "It's okay." My father said, "I'm sorry for you."

"What?" I asked in confusion, not understanding what it meant. My father did not say anything else, smoking his cigarette one puff after another.

"Mom, what's going on?" I walked to my mother and gently held her hand.

The mother's hands trembled slightly, and the tears in her eyes became more and more unstoppable: "Your father... was laid off."

My mind was buzzing with thoughts. My father worked in a state-owned enterprise and was the only one in the family who worked. All the expenses of daily life depended on his meager salary. Now my father was laid off, which meant that the family would have no income at all!

"When it rains, it pours." Father shook his head slightly: "Misfortunes never come singly, misfortunes never come singly..."

My father was laid off and I was fired. It was truly a double whammy. This family, which was already vulnerable to the wind and rain, was hit even harder.

"Son, I am too embarrassed to see you." The father sighed, "I wish I could rush to the school the day you were expelled, pat you on the shoulder and say it's okay, we can just change schools. But I am not a rich man, nor a high-ranking official, I am just a poor commoner, how can I have the confidence to say these words, how can I have the confidence to comfort you?"

"Dad..." My tears flowed uncontrollably. I wanted to say something to comfort my father, but the words were stuck in my throat.

"Don't cry." The father said, "Son, don't cry."

I wiped my tears and looked at my father.

"Being fired is nothing. I know you have a clear conscience. The same goes for me. I was laid off, but I also have a clear conscience." The father sighed and said, "No matter how difficult life is, we have to go on. Next, I plan to go out to work. What about you?"

"I..." I suddenly found that I couldn't say the word "vocational college". How sad would my parents be if they knew I wanted to go to vocational college? They have already suffered too much, and I can't make it worse.

"Haven't you decided on the school you want to go to?" The father said calmly, "It doesn't matter. Just tell me. Your mother and I will fully support you and will sell everything we have to support you in school. I believe that with your ability, you can get into college even if you go to any high school!"

The mother, who had been wiping away tears, also said, "Yes, your father and I have thought about it. You have always been a good child, and being expelled is not the result you want. It doesn't matter. Other high schools are vying for students who graduate from City High School. You can study with peace of mind if you change schools, so you don't have to feel too sad. Your father and I won't blame you."

My parents are facing the biggest problem in their lives, but they have to comfort me after I was fired. I feel so sad, as if something is stabbing me. My parents hope that I can go to high school and take the college entrance examination. If they knew that I wanted to go to a vocational college... I dare not think about it anymore, because it will undoubtedly make them even sadder.

"Haohao, don't worry about the family's financial problems." Mother said, "Your father works outside and earns more than he does in the factory. I will find a cleaning job and it will definitely be no problem to supplement the family income. Do you understand?"
