Chapter 555

As for the reward after solving the case, we can discuss it.

Hearing Uncle Bin say he wanted to become a teacher at the school, I was very worried: "You guys... can you really be teachers? This is a provincial-level key high school..."

This is the only thing Principal Zhou can be proud of, the only thing he can stand up and show off in front of these eccentrics.

"I'm perfectly capable of being a physical education teacher. As for Sister Sang—as an alchemist, she's undoubtedly also an expert in chemistry. Your top-level teachers are nothing compared to her."

Principal Zhou was somewhat skeptical, but he still kept praising it—"Awesome, awesome."

"Alright, take me to the crime scene." Uncle Bin acted immediately. Beforehand, he had instructed, "Lin Yue, you don't need to go. Immediately complete the transfer procedures and join the class. As for Shanshan..."

Even if Uncle Bin didn't give Shanshan any instructions, she knew what to do.

The obese Principal Zhou, his steps already unsteady from fright, led Uncle Bin and Sang Huanxin downstairs to the crime scene.

It was an open space in front of the library, with warning signs around it to keep students away. There was still a bloodstain on the ground.

Huanxin squatted down, dipped his finger into the dust on the ground nearby, sniffed it, and judged, "There's phosphorus powder."

Uncle Bin responded, "Phosphorus powder is usually used to draw patterns at night." Soon, traces of phosphorus powder were found in several nearby places, indicating that its appearance was by no means accidental.

Following Uncle Bin's suggestion, Huanxin had an idea. He asked the principal to bring a piece of chalk and connect all the points where phosphorus powder traces were found.

"What...what is this?" The principal was taken aback when he saw it.

Sang Huanxin replied impatiently to the principal, "Didn't Uncle Bin just tell you that phosphorus can be used to draw magic circles? At night, the magic circles drawn will glow and be more effective."

After Sang Huanxin connected the remaining traces of phosphorus powder at the scene with chalk, what appeared before the three of them was the prototype of a large magic circle with a radius of five meters.

Uncle Bin's reasoning had found a direction, so he instructed the principal to send all the students away, and then asked, "Where is the body?"

"Just about to send it over..."

"No! We won't find anything from those guys. Take me to see the body!"

The body of the male student who jumped from the building was temporarily placed in a very secluded place, in an open area behind the library.

Only the police knew, and only the police were guarding the place. The three arrived at the location. Sang Huanxin lifted the white sheet and didn't even blink when he saw the gruesome death, while Principal Zhou was so frightened he almost wet himself. Uncle Bin opened the box and took out a prop—it was a scale.

"What's the use of this?"

"Why are you so annoying? Just watch properly!" Sang Huanxin "scolded" the principal impatiently.

Uncle Bin had great respect for the dead. Before conducting the investigation, he first paid his respects to the deceased, and then took two hairs of the same length from the body and placed them on two plates, one on the left and one on the right.

Principal Zhou thought that hair was so light that it had almost no weight, and that the scales could not possibly sway. He looked down on everything Uncle Bin had done.

But the reality left him speechless. The left side of the scales slumped down sharply first, then balanced back up after a period of swaying, revealing a difference in weight between the left and right sides.

Then, based on the symbols on the disc, Uncle Bin deduced that the deceased had lost 17 grams after death.

"What's the meaning?"

Uncle Bin didn't show the same impatience as Sang Huanxin; he simply answered the principal's question indifferently.

"This is a device that uses a strand of hair to weigh the deceased before and after death. The left side shows the weight before death, and the right side shows the weight after death. Now, comparing the two, there is a difference of 17 grams."

"What's so strange about that? Isn't it said that a person's weight decreases after death, and it's the weight of their soul that decreases?" The principal still didn't understand.

"Wrong. The weight of the soul that Death takes away must be 21 grams. Death is very cunning; if he wants you to die at midnight, he won't let you live until dawn."

The soul taken away should also be exactly 21 grams, no more, no less. However, the deceased lost 17 grams, indicating that the soul was not completely taken. In other words, it wasn't Death who took his soul.

"Then who exactly took away the soul of the deceased?" Sang Huanxin asked on behalf of the principal.

Uncle Bin guided the reasoning in this way: "Think about the previous paranormal cases. The upside-down, skinned corpses, the internal organs and bones all replaced with stones, sandalwood, and seeds—this time, the souls of the dead have been extracted. Don't you think these all resemble some kind of cruel ritual? The common thread among these dead is that they've lost something. Doesn't this seem like a 'sacrifice'?"

While Uncle Bin and Sister Sang were investigating, Lin Yue was walking down the corridor, then turned onto the stairs leading up to the rooftop.

The rooftop is the best place to observe the entire school and feel the eerie atmosphere, and it's rarely disturbed. He stood near the cliff-like platform, leaning against the railing, overlooking the Holy Cross College. The Christian-style buildings were arranged in a staggered pattern, with blue and white as the main colors, creating a solemn atmosphere.

This is a key provincial high school, renowned for its rigorous teaching methods and closed management style. I really wonder how much impact this will have on the school if word gets out?

Lin Yue didn't care about any of that. This wasn't his school, and the people inside weren't his classmates. He had absolutely no feelings for them. Even if something happened here, he couldn't be bothered to care.

Suddenly, a shadowy figure appeared behind Lin Yue. It was as black as a shadow, holding a dagger, and its bright red lips curled into a smile. It approached Lin Yue silently.
