"And then my brother left the Holy Capital before us!"
Philsa indeed did not contact the two of them, nor even say goodbye, before hastily leaving Gransis.
"Right now, he's probably carrying out his mission while enjoying some time alone with his partner."
"This..." His companion was speechless, both amused and exasperated.
The girl was still grumbling incessantly. Just as she was about to fall silent after saying she was tired, she looked into the distance and noticed a wisp of smoke rising inexplicably, quite noticeable against the blue sky.
"Look over there... what exactly happened?"
The origin of the thick smoke was not far from the original route.
So Seris and Haruja decided to hurry and go see what had happened.
The thick smoke originated from a pile of burning hay, emitting a pungent, acrid smell. The haystack was nearly as tall as a person, and seven or eight middle-aged men in cloth robes, each carrying a spear, surrounded it.
They were residents from a nearby town, who were gathering together in panic.
“Doing this…should drive them away, right?” a resident said timidly.
Another responded, "We still need to be careful; there's more than one of them."
"Mayor! It looks like two adventurers are coming this way. Can we ask them for help?"
The middle-aged man in the gray shirt, addressed as the mayor, hesitated, "Adventurers... I wonder how much bounty they'll accept."
"But... there's no one left who can help us!"
The town mayor nodded affirmatively.
A tall, upright young man dressed as a dragoon, and a girl a head shorter than him beside him.
As the two figures gradually came into view, they looked overjoyed, as if they had met saviors.
Let's not even talk about the short-haired girl with a still-childish face.
Judging from the young man's imposing presence and the imposing purplish-black armor he wore, he was clearly an adventurer of considerable skill.
His weapon was a short gun, more than a meter long, strapped to his lower back; he must have been a warrior skilled in close combat.
Judging from his bright, piercing eyes and upright demeanor, he doesn't seem like the kind of opportunistic adventurer...
As for the girl beside him... she doesn't seem to be a magician... in any case, she's an adventurer too.
"What happened?" the young man asked.
The people who set the haystack on fire were residents of the town of Lefrem. Just three nights ago, their town was attacked by monsters, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries.
Although there is a nominal knight guild in the town, it is practically non-existent. Few knights have the time to visit Lefrem. Most of them gather in the Holy City and only visit this small place when they have accepted a quest related to Lefrem.
Marquis Alex, the leader of the Obsidian Knights, and another knight had visited Frem, but neither stayed for more than a day. Ironically, the very night after they left the town, monsters launched a ferocious attack.
Lefrem was originally a peaceful town, untouched by monsters.
"Um... as for the bounty... we'll try our best to pay it. If that's still not enough, we have plenty of local specialties here..."
The mayor pleaded in a low voice, promising to spend whatever it takes to get rid of the monsters.
"What?" Seris asked in astonishment, not yet having reacted.
The mayor, thinking his words had displeased him, rubbed his hands together and quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, we're not wealthy in Frem, so..."
Seris smiled knowingly. "I think you've misunderstood. I'm not an adventurer, but a knight belonging to the Silverwing Knights. As for bounties, I can't accept them, but I'll do my best to help you deal with the monsters no matter what."
After hearing Celis's explanation, their initial unease dissipated, and they secretly thanked the gods for giving the town a savior, quickly expressing their gratitude.
"However, before I help you, I need to understand a few things..."
When Seris asked where the monsters came from, everyone pointed to a special area not far to the south.
He looked over there. In that meadow area, so different from the grassland he was in, a kind of herbaceous plant with slender leaf tips was growing everywhere. Judging from its appearance, it should be a kind of grass, but it was growing unusually densely, with a bright green color, and was more than a meter tall.
It was simply an endless grassland, a sea of green grass meeting the blue sky, obscuring the horizon. He thought to himself.
"What do monsters look like?"
The residents gestured wildly, and by combining the information they provided about the demon's appearance, Seris roughly understood its main characteristics.
He speculated that it must be a type of demon called "human-faced demon".
As their name suggests, they have human-like faces and coarse black hair. These demons have very well-developed limbs with claws, and can walk on flat ground and climb walls. They are also very strong jumpers.
Another distinctive feature is that they all have a large, hard horn on their backs, and their skin is mostly dark in color, such as red or brown.
“They often hide inside and attack residents,” one person added.
“I have a general understanding of the situation. I hope none of you will approach this high grassland until I have dealt with them.” Then he turned to his companions, “And you—”
Haruja interrupted with a grin, "Of course I'll follow you."
