Chapter 612

Nodding, the three of us tiptoed and pushed open the half-closed inn door. With a creak, the door opened.

The interior was similar to what we had imagined, a simple inn layout with five tables and a simple counter. We observed the interior carefully when Xiang Fei suddenly said, "Have you noticed anything strange about this place?"

"where?"

"Don't you think something's missing here?" Xiang Fei continued.

"Something's missing?" I looked around and realized, "Why aren't there any bowls and chopsticks here?"

Logically speaking, a guesthouse must have bowls and chopsticks. Regardless of the dynasty or ethnicity, people always need bowls and chopsticks to eat.

Suddenly, Xiang Fei seemed to have discovered something. He picked up his headlamp and shone it on the second floor of the inn. There was a round hole above. When the light shone on it, a pale human face was lying at the entrance of the hole. It had no expression and looked no different from a dead person. Two empty eyes were staring at us.

I was startled, but the black cat seemed to have spotted its prey and, like a big cat, darted up in a few moments. Xiang Fei and I quickly followed.

A commotion erupted from the second floor. When we ran up, the black cat was standing by the window, clutching a tattered cloth in its hand.

"How did it go?" Xiang Fei asked.

The black cat just shook its head, pointed out the window, and then handed the rag to Xiang Fei. I also went over to take a look, and it seemed that the black cat had torn the rag off from that thing.

After taking a look, I already knew that this should be coarse linen, the earliest clothing made of coarse linen. Although it is rough, it is very sturdy. Generally, ancient people would wear only one piece of clothing for their entire lives.

After putting away the rags, we began to examine the second floor of the inn. The second floor was obviously where we stayed, with about ten rooms of various sizes. We were in the lobby, which would be called the living room in modern terms.

The room was simply furnished. I randomly pushed open one door, and inside there was just a bed and some basic everyday furniture, with an oil lamp on the table.

I glanced around and it seemed to be a room for female guests. There was a bronze mirror on the table next to the bed, and a red quilt was laid out on the bed.

I walked over, and my gaze involuntarily fell on the bronze mirror. This bronze mirror was very simple and ancient, with a very smooth surface that could clearly reflect a person's image.

Such a bronze mirror would be worth at least a million if taken outside. Of course, we came here not to steal anything valuable, but to explore and discover the mysteries of the ancient Shu people.

I observed for a moment, and was about to look around when I inadvertently saw a blurry shadow in the bronze mirror besides myself, a shadow dressed in red.

I was startled and immediately realized what was happening. I pretended to be nonchalant and walked away quickly out of the room. Xiang Fei and the black cat also came out. Their expressions were also somewhat strange, presumably because they had also seen something eerie.

At this moment, Xiang Fei said in a deep voice, "Let's leave here first and go to the house across the street."

Although I didn't understand what he meant, I nodded in agreement, so the three of us turned off our miner's lamps and took out a miniature tactical flashlight to light the way.

We found our way out of the inn and quickly entered the houses across the street, which were probably shops or similar buildings. We went in and immediately closed the door.

Xiang Fei took out a dagger and poked several small holes in the wooden door, then gestured for everyone to be quiet and observe the situation.

The scene fell silent; you could hear a pin drop. After a long while, the black cat suddenly spoke up: "They're here."

I was a little surprised. I had always thought he really was mute. Hearing him say that, Xiang Fei and I held our breath and listened quietly to the sounds outside.

Sure enough, very faint footsteps sounded on the dark street, indicating that several people were slowly approaching the inn.

At this point, Xiang Fei and I could only worry anxiously, unlike the black cat who could see clearly. After a while, those people must have entered the inn, and I whispered, "What exactly are these 'things'?"

"It's a person," the black cat simply replied.

Needless to say, Xiang Fei and I were both incredulous. How could there be people in this place? Could there really be immortal beings?

Then the black cat said, "You all wait here, I'll go catch one and study it."

After saying that, before we could react, he darted away like a big cat, his speed truly like that of a peerless master in a martial arts novel.

Xiang Fei and I waited in the darkness for about half a minute, when a dark shadow darted over and entered the house. It was Black Cat carrying a dark object on its back.

Xiang Fei and I were both secretly astonished.

Then we found the back door, entered a relatively enclosed room, turned on our headlamps, and saw that there was a person on the back of the black cat, a disheveled, skinny person who looked like a monkey.

With his hands and feet bound, the black cat put him down and began to struggle violently, his mouth gagged as he uttered incoherent words, or rather, cries.

Under the light of the miner's lamp, we could see his face clearly. His face was as white as a sheet of paper, and his eyes were filled with a ghostly light and fear. His facial bones were similar to ours, but the most obvious difference was that his arms were very long relative to his body, and his fingers had long, sharp nails.

At first glance, he looked much like a corpse demon, but his rapid breathing due to fear told us that he was indeed human.

Xiang Fei took out a lighter and lit it. He seemed to have seen something terrifying, and his body was trembling with fear. It was clear that he was very afraid of fire, or rather, afraid of light. Like those creatures that have always lived in darkness, firelight is their nemesis.
