Xiang Fei and I could only barely defend ourselves, but Black Cat was different. He was practically a human weapon, invincible and unstoppable. His large hands kept twisting off the heads of these things, which gave me the creeps.
Finally, we dealt with these strange soldier statues. The ground was covered with plaster-like powder. I looked closely and found that there were human bones inside. It was clear that these statues were made of plaster and that living people were sealed inside.
Twenty Dragon Veins (4)
I waved my hand, squatted on the ground panting. I'd already seen these strange things before even entering the tomb. Who knows what I'll encounter once I'm inside? If I could get out now, I would definitely consider it.
Just then, the black cat quickly gestured for us to turn off the lights, ran over and closed the door, saying, "Listen."
Absolute silence fell all around us. Xiang Fei and I listened intently and, sure enough, we heard a faint call in the deathly still environment, like the howling of the wind, but there wasn't a breath of wind at all.
The sound was very faint; it was almost imperceptible if you didn't listen carefully. It seemed to be calling out something, and it was very mournful, like the cry of someone in despair.
At first, we didn't think much of it, but the more we listened, the more horrified we became. The sound grew more and more shrill, until it sounded like the mournful scream of a vengeful ghost.
And it seemed that right there in this hall, we all wiped away our cold sweat; this place was filled with eeriness.
However, now that we've come this far, it's not easy to back out, so we can only grit our teeth and continue searching.
After a while, Xiang Fei's voice rang out, "Found it."
We immediately gathered around and saw Xiang Fei squatting in the center of the main hall, tapping a stone slab with his hand.
"It should be right below here. This stone slab is hollow and much wider than the others."
I looked at it and nodded in agreement. So the three of us took out our tools and cleared the edge of the stone slab. Then the black cat raised its two hands, and sure enough, a dark hole was revealed below. A cold aura rushed towards us.
The hole was big enough for two people to go in. When they shone a lamp into it, they discovered that it was a stone path made of stone blocks, leading all the way down. They didn't know how deep it was, because even the miner's lamp couldn't reach the bottom.
We all know that this should be the location of the tomb, and we feel a mix of fear and excitement.
After checking the equipment again, Black Cat led the way, and I followed at the back, as we entered the ancient tomb.
The surrounding area consisted of stone walls made of huge rocks. After walking for over a hundred meters, we reached the end, where a huge, bottomless cave appeared. Several iron chains were nailed to the rocks and fell down into it.
After checking the sturdiness of the chain, the three of us grabbed it and fell down. After about twenty or thirty meters, we saw the ground.
This is a natural karst cave, which has been carved out by humans and is exceptionally spacious. When we swept our headlamps across the cave, we could see a tall stone gate on the rock wall in front of us, comparable to the gate of a palace.
The top is carved with a strange pattern. The pattern depicts a person dressed as a priest, wearing a mask so it is impossible to tell whether it is male or female. The priest is holding captives or perhaps members of his own tribe, binding them with ropes and then slashing their bodies with a knife. The blood that flows down is collected in the altar.
Inside the altar was a blood-red coffin, surrounded by ancient Shu people who knelt and worshipped it.
The stone door was clearly very sturdy and could not be opened by human power. It was sealed with stone mortar inside, and there may have been traps inside. This was the most common method used in ancient Chinese tombs, especially some royal tombs, where the tomb door was the last line of defense.
Fortunately, we had explosives with us. We don’t know where Xiang Fei got them from. The stonemasons in our area used to be able to do that, but now the regulations are stricter, and you have to get approval from the police station to set off a blast.
We used a steel chisel to drill a hole in the stone gate, and just like blasting rocks, we put the explosives in, set the fuse, and then we all hid to the side.
With a loud bang, a hole was blasted open in the stone door. There were no traps inside. After the smoke cleared, we shone our headlamps inside.
This was a huge cave carved out by man. The miner's lamp couldn't even reach the bottom. Gusts of cold wind blew in. On the cliff face near the entrance, rows of hanging coffins could be seen. Black Cat led the way and went in, and Xiang Fei and I followed.
We hadn't gone far when we discovered a mass grave, clearly the site of a mass slaughter. The pit was about half the size of a basketball court and contained at least several hundred skeletons. Due to the passage of time, the skeletons had weathered away.
After taking a quick look, we continued walking. The cliffs on both sides were covered with hanging coffins, some of which were already broken. Strangely, no corpses were visible inside.
Just as we were filled with doubt, a drop of viscous liquid suddenly fell on my face. I touched it and immediately smelled the stench of a corpse.
Instinctively, I shone my headlamp upwards and was almost startled into screaming. Above our heads hung ancient corpses, all suspended by ropes.
The bodily fluids kept dripping down, spreading densely throughout the cave.
The clothing worn by these ancient corpses is very old and does not belong to any dynasty in ancient China; it should belong to the prehistoric era.
These ancient corpses included men and women, young and old. I don't know how they were preserved, but they were very well preserved, with their facial features clearly visible. When I shone my headlamp on them, I saw that one of the ancient corpses had grotesque facial features, and its face looked as if it had been smeared with a layer of white ash. Only its mouth was eerily red, like a vengeful ghost.
I quickly moved aside, and then Xiang Fei said, "These should be the corpses inside the hanging coffins, but they were taken out and hung here. It seems that this was a struggle between two ethnic groups, and the victor took everything from the loser, not even the dead."
