I let out a long breath and was about to speak when I saw the black cat, with a serious expression, make a shushing gesture, indicating that I should follow him. So the two of us carefully moved forward step by step.
I knew that once we exited the cave, we would be in the same burial chamber we had entered from. Thinking back to that scene still sends shivers down my spine. The black cat in front of us stopped, and the two of us climbed to the cave entrance, looking down.
At first glance, I was horrified and almost cried out. The tomb was full of corpses, all torn to shreds. The blood coffin in the center was open, and apart from the viscous blood liquid, there was nothing else inside.
We both stepped back, and I asked in a low voice, "What exactly is in that blood coffin?" "Blood Fiend, the most powerful of all corpse fiends," the black cat replied in a deep voice.
Hearing this answer, I became even more frightened. First there was a vengeful ghost, and now a blood demon has jumped out, powerful enough to capture souls and devour bodies. Could there be anything worse than this?
I feel like dying right now. Why did I even have to come here to rob tombs? Now I haven't even managed to steal a tomb, and I've fallen into a ghost cave instead. Remembering what the old blind man told me, I couldn't help but shake my head.
As Black Cat and I watched the situation unfold, a light appeared in the darkness, heading straight towards us. We exchanged a glance and hid on opposite sides of the cave.
When the light came closer, we could see that it was Xiang Fei, but was it really Xiang Fei?
We held our breath and waited for Xiang Fei to come over. Then, Black Cat and I tackled him to the ground.
Without thinking twice, I grabbed the talisman. With the black cat around, I could handle it with ease. I lit the soul-suppressing lamp and shouted, "Hurry up and show your true face!" I mimicked the Taoist priests on TV, chanting incantations. Then I took out a piece of yellow paper, spat some water on it, and stuck it to his forehead.
"I'm a human being, of course I'm human! What do you want from me?" Xiang Fei seemed to be furious.
"Hmph, stop pretending. We already know your true origins. Just wait to be suppressed by me."
"I mean, have you ever seen a ghost that breathes and has a heartbeat?"
Upon hearing this, I immediately nodded, "That's right," and placed my hand near his nose. "Hmm, you are breathing. But that's still not enough to convince us. How about this, we'll cut you and see if you bleed or feel pain."
Upon hearing this, Xiang Fei's face turned green. "Damn you! I'm a human being. If you don't believe me, try cutting yourself!"
“Alright, we made a mistake. He is Xiang Fei,” Black Cat said, releasing him.
Xiang Fei stretched his body. "You guys weren't scared out of your wits, were you? Is it really that bad? They're just two ghosts."
"Cough cough, two ghosts, and now even the Blood Fiend has appeared, and....."
"And what?"
So I told him what I had seen at the Thousand-Layer Hanging Coffin.
Hearing this, Xiang Fei shook his head. "Impossible. When the yin wind swept in, we ran for our lives together. But when we got to that cave entrance, I told you to run in the other direction, but you didn't seem to hear me. In the blink of an eye, you disappeared. I couldn't catch up with you. Later, after the yin wind passed, I came to look for you and followed the wind until I found this place."
"What do we do now?" I asked after a moment of silence.
"Why don't we go back?" the black cat suddenly said.
"go back?"
"Yes, go back along this road."
The coffin of the Twenty-Five Kings of Shu?
Xiang Fei and I were both puzzled. Wouldn't going back be the same as going into danger again?
The black cat nodded and continued, "Now we have no way out. Rather than this, we might as well face it head-on and unravel this age-old mystery."
Xiang Fei and I remained silent for a while, and finally nodded in agreement. At least now that the three of us are together, we can handle any ghosts. As for the Blood Fiend, that's up to Black Cat.
We turned on our headlamps and jumped into the Thousand-Layer Hanging Coffins. Most of the place had collapsed, with broken coffins everywhere and the mummified corpses in tatters.
We explored step by step until we reached the end. I looked up and exclaimed, "Hey, where did that black wooden coffin go?"
Clearly, Xiang Fei and the black cat also realized something was wrong and quickly ran over to investigate.
Then I noticed that the figure wearing a bronze mask in the mural on the cliff next to me was also gone. I thought I was seeing things, so I rubbed my eyes, but it was still gone.
A chill ran down my spine. "Could he have left on his own?"
Suddenly, a wriggling sound came from the collapsed hanging coffins behind us. Black Cat immediately said, "Let's go up quickly." After saying that, he led the way and ran towards the iron chain. Xiang Fei and I didn't have time to ask any questions and followed him. We grabbed the iron chain and climbed up.
The dilapidated hanging coffins below began to wriggle, and then, to our horror, one after another, mummified corpses crawled out, just like the ones we had seen when we came in, only these were much more dilapidated, some were crawling with only half their bodies, and some were headless.
There were nearly a thousand of them, crawling towards us like ants.
"Quickly throw in the pine resin, they're terrified of fire," Xiang Fei reminded them.
So the three of us lit a ball of pine resin and threw it down. Instantly, like fire meeting dry wood, the fire quickly ignited. The three of us climbed up and entered the Corpse Bat Cave. There was another fire there, and the corpse bats had already run away.
"Ah~", a roar like that of a demon from hell came from the fire below. A body engulfed in flames jumped out of the pile of corpses. Its whole body was covered in blood and flesh, as if a person had been skinned, and its big face was covered with rotting flesh.
