"So who do you think it could be?"
"I don't know, and besides, what exactly does the Great Sage Equaling Heaven mean by 'around'? Does it refer to just the few of us, or everyone around us?"
After a moment of silence, Xiang Fei and I went back. "Now we can only wait until nightfall; presumably, the corpse will come out to find food then."
"Looking for food?" I was startled. "Are you going to eat people?"
"No, it's not a real corpse yet. It's just possessed by a ghost. At most, it will drink animal blood. We'll just observe tonight and have the villagers let the dogs go."
I nodded, understanding what Xiang Fei meant.
At a key intersection in the village, lime and sulfur were scattered, and they waited for it to appear.
As darkness fell, the villagers all went home and locked their doors. Xiang Fei and I sat quietly in the courtyard, waiting.
Time passed slowly, and it was already past midnight, but there was still no sign of them. I began to wonder, "Could they have gone somewhere else?"
Just as I was about to ask Xiang Fei, I saw him make a shushing gesture and point to the outside of the yard. I quickly listened carefully and sure enough, there was a very faint sound coming from outside.
"It's here."
Xiang Fei and I acted quickly, preparing black dog blood and rope. The sound grew closer and closer, and we soon reached the entrance to the yard, where there was a chicken coop. Sure enough, we soon heard the clucking of chickens.
"Action!" Xiang Fei turned on the lights. We had arranged it beforehand. As soon as we turned on the lights, all the other houses in the village would immediately turn on their lights and shine their own mine flashlights out.
Suddenly the whole village was illuminated. Xiang Fei and I rushed out and ran quickly to the chicken coop. We shone our lights on it and saw a person squatting in front of the coop, holding a chicken that was already motionless.
The Past of Ninety-Two Families
The village dogs also ran over, but they all surrounded this 'person,' barking wildly, and dared not approach.
The 'ding-a-ling' bell in my hand rang, and I knew in my heart that this was the corpse.
The corpse had its back to us, sucking chicken blood. Xiang Fei shouted and threw a Yin-Yang talisman at it. The corpse immediately jumped up, dropped the chicken in its hand, and with a sinister laugh, it turned around.
We saw that its entire face was black, emanating a heavy aura of malevolence, and its eyes were cold and eerie. I was shocked. "It has been possessed by that ghost that collects souls."
Xiang Fei nodded, "Whatever you do, don't let it escape."
We splashed black dog blood on ourselves, then pulled a yin-yang rope around it. It let out a strange cry and turned to run back into the village, but we had already set up a yin-yang spell to suppress it, and I had lit the soul-suppressing lamp and placed it on the table.
Seeing that things were not going well, it turned around and charged at us again. We quickly jumped away, and Xiang Fei threw out a yellow talisman, which made its body sway and black smoke rise.
Taking this opportunity, we surrounded it and quickly ran around it a few times. The yin-yang rope got tangled in it, but this thing was incredibly strong and let out terrifying roars, causing all the surrounding dogs to tuck their tails between their legs and run away.
Xiang Fei and I pulled on the Yin-Yang rope with all our might. Fortunately, there was a pomelo tree nearby, about the size of a bowl. I quickly wrapped the Yin-Yang rope around it, and that's how we managed to hold on.
"Quickly splash it with black dog blood," Xiang Fei practically forced out the words through clenched teeth.
I listened to him, picked up the remaining half-scoop of black dog blood from the ground, and splashed it on the spot.
"Awooo... Roar," the thing let out a painful howl, billowing black smoke rising from its body, as if it had gone mad. Xiang Fei and I could barely hold it back, and even the pomelo tree as thick as a bowl was shaking.
With a snap, the Yin-Yang Rope broke, and we rolled on the ground.
The creature roared and charged out of the village, heading towards the mountains.
"Quick, it's already badly injured. We can't let it escape with the corpse."
Xiang Fei and I turned on our flashlights and chased after it. Xiang Fei muttered something, and then the talisman in his hand flew out and stuck to its back.
We've now entered the mountains. This thing is just like a monkey, and it doesn't even hurt when it climbs. If it weren't for Xiang Fei's talisman, we would have definitely lost track of it by now.
As we chased after it, we saw it jump into a cave in the mountains. We followed it and saw a stone cave that looked like it had been carved out of a rock quarry. When we went inside, we saw a stone-structured tomb chamber, which looked like an ancient tomb.
The place had already been looted by tomb raiders. Apart from a stone coffin in the center, there was nothing else left. It was thoroughly looted, clearly having been visited by several groups of tomb raiders.
Xiang Fei pointed inside the stone coffin, signaling me to be careful. We slowly walked over, and just in case, we put a few talismans inside. Seeing no movement, we looked inside.
As expected, the corpse was lying inside, but the possessing ghost was gone, obviously having escaped. We searched the surroundings again but couldn't find any trace of the ghost, so we rested.
Finally, we affixed Taoist talismans to the corpse, set up a Yin-Yang magic array around the stone coffin, and then went back.
The body can only be taken back by his family tomorrow. However, according to Xiang Fei, the body should be cremated. It has been possessed by a ghost and has acquired evil energy. Keeping it will only bring trouble.
By the time I got back to my grandmother's house, it was almost dawn. Xiang Fei went home by himself, too exhausted to stay, and fell asleep as soon as he lay down on the bed.
Two days later, I had the deceased's family take the body back and then cremate it. Of course, cremation here is very simple and direct: just put the body in the fire and burn it, then collect a few bones and bury them. I then performed a ritual and returned home in the afternoon.
