The mummified corpse tried to run away, but the black cat knelt on one knee and it struggled violently. We shone our headlamps on it and finally saw clearly that the mummified corpse was actually a person, a person exactly like the one we had captured earlier.
His hair was disheveled, and the skin on his face fell away, revealing a face as pale as paper, with eyes that gleamed eerily as he stared at us coldly.
They were speaking in a strange language that we couldn't understand at all. Then the mummies started moving again and surrounded us from all sides.
Seeing this, the black cat knocked him unconscious with a single punch, lifting him up like a chick, and said, "Let's get out of here quickly."
The three of us ran toward the center of the palace, and the mummies crawled up behind us like ants. In Black Cat's words, these mummies had been controlled by a corpse-controlling technique, and only the person controlling them could break free; otherwise, they would keep following us, looking for an opportunity to kill us.
We found an attic and ran inside. The furnishings were still simple. Then, as Xiang Fei instructed, we took out some pine resin and placed it around the attic. When the mummies came, we would light the pine resin. The best way now was to burn the mummies.
Soon after, we heard crawling sounds coming from all around the attic. The three of us nodded to each other and lit the pine resin around us. Instantly, the flames blazed brightly, and the solitary attic burst into flames.
Then we quickly went downstairs and ran out. The mummies had already climbed up and surrounded the attic. Suddenly, a fire broke out. Although these mummies were being controlled, they were not human after all, and their reactions and movements were no match for ours.
In an instant, it was engulfed by the fire, and the entire palace was brightly lit. The pavilion was a wooden building and dry, so the mummies didn't have time to crawl away before they were consumed by the fire and instantly burned to ashes.
Flames shot into the sky, and dark figures kept rushing out of the houses; they were clearly the descendants of the half-human, half-ghost Shu people. They were terrified of fire and were fleeing in all directions, giving us the opportunity to escape.
He headed straight for the center of the palace.
After passing through a wide corridor, the palace standing in the center came into view. The surroundings were unusually quiet, and an inexplicable atmosphere weighed heavily on our minds.
A wide stone-paved avenue leads to the palace, just like in the palaces of ancient emperors, only much smaller.
Stone statues are arranged on both sides, resembling civil and military officials, but strangely, none of these statues have faces.
It was quiet, extremely quiet, with only the sound of our footsteps echoing around us, and the main hall above was pitch black.
The three of us remained silent as we walked up the stone steps to the main hall. This grand hall was about twenty meters high and was very well preserved. We all stopped in front of the gate.
They exchanged glances, their hearts tightening. This must be the true entrance to the ancient tomb. It was obvious that the tomb's occupant was of extremely high status, perhaps even the legendary king of the ancient Shu people.
This tomb is a marvel of nature, a true miracle. Legend has it that it contains an immortal being. Thousands of years later, we might still be a group of tomb raiders.
Finally, Xiang Fei took a deep breath and pushed open the heavy door. The lights illuminated the room, which was like a royal palace. Every single item inside was valuable.
We don't care about any of that. What's important right now is to find the entrance to the ancient tomb, which we assume is in this main hall.
On either side of the main hall stood rows of soldier statues. Unlike the ones outside, these soldier statues were mostly intact, majestic and imposing. However, I felt as if these statues were staring at us.
The three of us searched the main hall. Logically, the entrance to the tomb passage should be on the ground, but we searched for a long time without finding anything unusual.
I looked around with my headlamp and accidentally bumped into a soldier's statue. At first, I didn't think much of it, but after taking a few steps, I realized what had happened.
I was startled. When I bumped into the soldier statue, it felt just like bumping into a person; the statue even took a step back.
The headlamp shone on the statue, and I saw that the statue I had just bumped into was actually smiling at me, which seemed very eerie in this environment.
My scalp was about to explode. I called Xiang Fei and Black Cat over and gestured for them to look at the statues.
"Oh no!" Xiang Fei suddenly shouted, "These soldiers are alive!"
We hurriedly retreated outside, but it was too late. With a cracking sound, a layer of stone skin peeled off the soldiers, and they walked towards us like zombies.
Their faces were expressionless and their movements were extremely stiff, like puppets, each holding a bronze sword.
Ignoring the shock, Xiang Fei and I picked up our hunting rifles and started shooting. As for Black Cat, he had already started fighting and twisted off a soldier's head.
The impact hit the soldiers with a 'boom boom,' but instead of splattering blood as expected, the bullets scattered like stones.
Although there was only one, there were too many of them. We still had to reload. In the blink of an eye, the soldiers had surrounded us, slashing and stabbing with dozens of swords.
At the critical moment, it was the black cat that came to the rescue. He picked up a soldier's body and swept it across, crashing into a large group of people with a 'whoosh'.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Xiang Fei and I broke through the encirclement and launched a fierce attack.
Then, from who knows where, these strange soldiers kept popping out. We only had about a hundred bullets to begin with, and in the blink of an eye, we had used up most of them.
Xiang Fei said in a deep voice, "We can't use bullets anymore, otherwise we'll be in trouble if we encounter the Corpse Fiend once we enter the ancient tomb."
I understood what he meant, so I threw the hunting rifle on the ground, drew my Tang sword, and started slashing like I'd seen on TV. Luckily, these creatures didn't have any thoughts; they only knew how to hack and slash. I dodged and weaved through them.
