May you have a peaceful and happy new year.

"Is this the plague god? He doesn't look like him."

"I never realized he was so powerful when I first saw him. You know Lao Xing, right? He had Lao Xing's hands cuffed and he still managed to chop off Lao Xing's head."

"Then we'd better stay far away."

"Just kidding, don't be so timid."

"Don't worry, I'm just a coward."

I've heard this kind of conversation several times. I don't know if it's intentional or unintentional. It could also be a way for them to observe whether I'm a pervert or some kind of criminal. I don't feel anything else about it anymore.

Although it might be a joke, I could clearly feel the fear the police officers guarding me had towards me. They were always very careful when bringing me food, as if I had some kind of contagious disease. Even the police officers who interrogated me had a heroic, death-defying expression that made me both laugh and cry.

In this atmosphere, the only person who treated me normally was Lei Yu. He still joked with me and occasionally brought me some wine. I was grateful to him, but I swallowed the words "make friends" that were on the tip of my tongue. After all, being my friend might lead to some bad things.

"Congratulations, Fang Shuang, your detention period is up. This time, you caused us a lot of trouble by going to another province while awaiting trial. Don't do it again next time."

"Yes, I'll die in Beijing."

"What are you saying at such a young age..." Lei Yu wanted to say something more to me, but when he saw my lifeless eyes, he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue.

"Like I said, contact me if anything happens."

I gave a soft reply, then got out of Lei Yu's car and walked towards my rented room. It had been so long since I'd used my own key, and I was still a little unaccustomed to it.

When I clumsily opened the door, I thought the old beggar would come into view, but he didn't. It was as if the old beggar had disappeared from my life.

I chuckled self-deprecatingly. Yeah, I'm a jinx. It's bad enough that I caused someone to lose a hand, but do I have to keep dragging him down? Lying on the bed, I buried my head in the blankets. After a month in the detention center, I hardly recognized my bed anymore. Why does it smell a little sweet? Then it dawned on me that something was wrong. I hadn't been back for a month, yet there wasn't a speck of dust in my room! The blankets looked like they'd just been aired out today! Someone had been in my room! Realizing this, I jumped out of bed and grabbed a suitcase—where I usually kept my ID and bank cards. I checked—everything was still there! Thank goodness, I hadn't been robbed.

So who came into my room? It wasn't a thief. The only valuable appliance in the room was the computer, but it was spotless, even cleaner than when I used it.

I quickly called my landlord and asked him about it.

"You don't know, while you were away on a business trip, your wife moved in and she's been cleaning your room so diligently every day. You're a lucky guy."

Huh? When did I get a wife? I was a little confused, but I didn't tell the landlord. He's just an ordinary person, and I didn't want to involve him in this kind of trouble.

Since I'm here, I might as well make the best of it. Nothing is more terrifying than death, and besides, I'm not afraid of a woman, am I?

I stared intently at the door, but it didn't open, and no one came in. In this standoff with the air, my drowsiness deepened, and I simply lay down on the bed and fell asleep.

I was half asleep when I was woken up by a delicious aroma. I sensed something was wrong – someone was in the room! "You're awake? Perfect timing! Dinner's just ready. Wash your face and start eating."

A figure walked past from the direction of the kitchen, wearing a large apron, but it couldn't hide his graceful figure. His hair was styled in a bun I didn't recognize, and his chin wasn't pointed; his face had an oval shape. His features weren't stunning, but they were just right and very pleasing to the eye.

I instinctively reached for the wooden stick I had placed by the bed, but I grasped nothing. The woman watched my movement and gently covered her mouth with a smile.

“That junk was too much of a nuisance in the house, so I threw it away.”

"Who exactly are you?" I looked at her, my heart filled with vigilance, but she was a woman, and a very beautiful one at that, so I couldn't be too wary.

Oh, I forgot.

This is our first time meeting. Let me introduce myself. I'm Shui Yanling, your fiancée.

What? I actually have a fiancée? I was stunned. Judging from Shui Yanling's expression, it didn't seem fake. I started to have some doubts.

I scratched my head and said.

"I'm sorry, I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

"I won't mistake you, Fang Shuang. We got engaged when you were three years old. It was your parents' idea."

"Wait a minute, my parents? I've never even met them, when did they get engaged?" My parents passed away when I was very young, and I grew up with my maternal grandfather.

I endured countless scornful looks as a child because I had no parents and my maternal grandfather was a charlatan. The other kids around me treated me like a germ, and I was beaten and called an orphan countless times. That's why I hate it when people call me an orphan.

Then, at this time, my parents, whose faces I didn't even know, actually left me a wife? I felt a sense of absurdity.

"I know you won't believe it, but this is Grandpa's phone number. Just call him."

Chapter Fifteen: Full of Vigor

Shui Yanling handed me her phone; it was that familiar number. I dialed it, and Grandpa's strong voice came through the other end.

"Hey, Shuang'er, you haven't called me in so long."
