The tall trees seemed to extend from the ground and reach high into the clouds; I couldn't see the treetops from here, only the thick branches.
Grandpa turned to me and said, "Stay close to me, don't touch anything, and don't look around if you hear any noise."
I could only nod quickly. I didn't know why, but it's always better to be careful.
After Grandpa finished speaking, he led the way towards the tall grove of trees. I pulled Shui Yanling's hand behind me and carefully followed behind him.
Soon we entered the forest, and what surprised me even more was that there were vines and tree roots everywhere. All I could see were white tree trunks, and the dense leaves overhead blocked out all the sunlight. Walking inside, I even felt a little eerie and scary.
Grandpa was still walking ahead, seemingly unaffected, while Shui Yanling looked around, wondering why she had never seen this place before! I, on the other hand, felt a bit terrified. For some reason, I felt like the trees were alive, as if they were staring at me. My heart trembled, but I didn't back down and could only slowly follow Grandpa.
A dull thud rang out, and I suddenly felt as if I had kicked something. My foot hurt a little, and I looked down.
At first glance, it gave me quite a fright, and I gasped softly.
At my feet lay a long-lost corpse, its remains now just bones, having been there for who knows how long.
I didn't see it just now, and I kicked the corpse's head off with one foot.
Actually, it wasn't that scary, but the quiet atmosphere around me and my somewhat tense mood made me gasp when I suddenly saw this.
My shouts weren't very loud, but they sounded like thunder in the quiet woods, startling even myself.
Hearing my cries, Grandpa quickly stopped, and just as he was about to tell me to be quiet, the accident happened.
Upon hearing my call, the forest actually came to life. Huge vines rolled on the ground, and the tree trunks swayed, creating a whooshing sound throughout the forest.
Grandpa stretched out his hand, signaling us not to move. Just then, a lot of noises suddenly came from all around.
"Play with me, play with me" sounds like a child's voice, but there are so many voices that it feels like hundreds of children are saying the same thing.
Upon hearing that sound, my ears immediately started to ache, so I quickly covered them. Then I told Yanling to do the same and cover her ears as well.
But the sound seemed to have penetrating power, it rang directly in my mind, as if it were about to blow my brain apart.
I could only cover my head, writhing on the ground in pain, while Shui Yanling wasn't much better; her face turned pale, and she could only cover her ears and squat on the ground.
However, Grandpa seemed to be unaffected. He turned his right hand and a piece of yellow paper appeared. He threw the paper away, and it burned and flew into the depths of the forest.
"Ah!" The cries of thousands of children echoed, and the piercing sound seemed to vanish instantly.
Amidst the cries of "Get out!" came a huge voice, seemingly from the depths of the forest.
Upon hearing this sound, the cries of the children that had been wailing joined in.
"Get out, get out!" But this time, the initial headache was gone; the voices were just too frequent and made people feel annoyed.
I slowly lowered my hand from my head, and then, listening to the sounds filling the forest, my face turned somewhat pale. I didn't know where the sounds were coming from, there were so many of them.
Judging from the intensity of these sounds, they should be right around us. But when I looked around, I found nothing but trees.
Suddenly a possibility occurred to me, and I instantly felt a chill run down my spine.
As if responding to my thoughts, the giant trees surrounding us began to rustle and their branches trembled violently, like menacing figures.
Could trees really talk? I couldn't help but wonder, but I wasn't too surprised, because I've seen a lot in my life now, so what if these trees really could talk?
But what happened next terrified me. Suddenly, human faces appeared among the violently shaking trees, as if they were hanging on the trunks of every tree, like the faces of the dead.
They were all pale-faced with empty eyes, but their mouths were filled with sharp teeth and their lips were covered in blood, making them look particularly terrifying.
"Grandpa, what are these things?" I felt a little uneasy, so I quickly asked my grandfather in front of me. Shui Yanling next to me was also puzzled. She had never seen these things before, even though they were on this mountain.
Grandpa's expression turned serious, and without turning his head, he said to us, "This is a man-eating evil tree. Many people have accidentally entered this place after going into the mountains and have been eaten. The corpse you just saw was eaten by them!" Man-eating tree? My mind raced. I only knew about man-eating flowers before, but I never thought there was such a ghostly thing. No wonder the village had a legend that this mountain ate people. I never thought it would be something like this.
