should

Could they be old friends? No way, this jade pendant was left to me by my parents. Could it be that this tree king also knows my parents? I couldn't help but feel a little excited, but I didn't do anything.

Because this is just my guess, and if I'm wrong and accidentally anger the Tree King, it won't be a good thing.

Besides, I've already made a promise with my grandfather that he'll tell me about my parents once I become stronger. He's doing this for my own good, so knowing too much now is definitely not a good thing.

The jade pendant and the tree king remained locked in a stalemate in the air for a long time. We didn't make any moves; we just watched the situation unfold.

I feel that the situation is pretty good right now. They seem to be having a very pleasant conversation, but I don't know the specifics, so I haven't let my guard down.

Later, as we were chatting, I noticed that the Tree King seemed to glance at me a few times, intentionally or unintentionally. Although it had no eyes, its gaze was even more intense than before.

I couldn't help but shudder. Could this jade pendant be selling me out? Could the Tree King really be a woman? The more I thought about it, the more frightened I became. I even wanted to take a few steps back, but my wrist was being held by the jade pendant, and I couldn't move an inch.

Thinking to myself, "It's over. This jade pendant has definitely sold me out. My life is over." With this thought, I felt utterly hopeless. I secretly glanced back at Shui Yanling and then let out a wail in my heart.

Chapter Sixty-Three: Unfettered Imagination

However, my guess was obviously a bit far-fetched. After a while, the jade pendant suddenly started flashing light and seemed to emit a questioning aura.

Seeing this unusual sight, I suddenly stood up, my eyes filled with vigilance.

Grandpa even stood up and stood behind me with Shui Yanling.

After receiving the aura of the jade pendant, the tree king seemed to hesitate for a moment. Then it looked at the ghost trees around it, but not at those that were still alive. Instead, it looked at those ghost trees that had been uprooted after I punched them away and were lying on the ground.

Not long after, the vines of the tree king seemed to nod gently in the air.

Then a roar came from the depths of the forest. The ghost trees that had been standing still showed a hint of sadness in their eyes after hearing the roar, and then they all closed their eyes. After a while, all the ghost trees retracted their vines.

As the ghost trees retracted their vines, the pale, dead faces on their trunks all changed and disappeared. If he hadn't seen those ferocious ghost trees with his own eyes, he might have thought it was an illusion.

After the ghost trees returned to normal, the giant vine seemed to send a breath to the jade pendant, then slowly shrank back and disappeared into the depths of the forest in the blink of an eye, leaving no trace.

If the jade pendant hadn't been floating in mid-air, I would have almost thought that nothing had happened.

Suddenly, the jade pendant emitted a bright light, illuminating the entire forest, as if it were about to do something. I stood still, not knowing what it was going to do, but I was sure it wouldn't harm me.

So I wasn't too worried. I just quietly looked at the jade pendant. My grandfather and Yanling stood behind me without moving, just staring at the jade pendant.

What happened next surprised me greatly. Under the light of the jade pendant, the entire forest seemed to stir, as if it were summoning something.

Besides us, there are still many man-eating trees in the forest that I blasted away with one punch. I uprooted those trees, and they are now lying quietly in the gaps between the trees. The pale, dead faces that were originally growing on the tree trunks are now twisted into a single shape, as if they were already dead.

At this moment, under the illumination of the jade pendant, the man-eating trees that I had blasted away suddenly changed. All the corpses of those trees were now enveloped in the faint green light of the jade pendant.

Under this green light, wisps of black gas actually floated out from the corpse of the man-eating tree. After swirling in the air a few times, the gas actually took on the shape of people.

However, everyone was covered in tree roots, and their faces were exactly the same as the dead faces that had been pasted on the tree trunks. But now, everyone's face was contorted with rage as they looked at us, as if they were about to charge at us.

I was so shocked by the tension before me that I couldn't speak. These trees were actually people, and there was even such a thing as souls. Did I just kill so many people? I felt a sense of terror for a moment, and my body involuntarily took a few steps back. Suddenly, my grandfather slapped me.

"Don't worry, these people were never good people to begin with. They came here specifically to search for treasure because they heard that there was something strange about this mountain," Grandpa's voice came from behind. "You don't need to blame yourself either. Besides, you didn't kill these people. They came here on their own and were killed by those trees. Their souls were absorbed by the trees, and they gradually became one of these ghost trees."

Hearing Grandpa's words, I was even more surprised. It turned out that these trees were not like this from the beginning, but became like this after absorbing people's souls. No wonder their movements were so human-like. But thinking about this made my scalp tingle even more.

This forest is so large; I wonder how many people must have died to create such a cannibalistic forest. If we hadn't been lucky enough that the Tree King recognized the jade pendant, we would probably all have become part of this forest.
