As a result, the most followed Nuwa, and the rest were Tongtian, who had tens of thousands of demons. Tongtian was overjoyed and accepted them all, thus giving him the imposing aura of ten thousand immortals paying homage.
The two Western saints tried to persuade them for a long time, but no one was willing to follow them, and their faces turned black with embarrassment.
Seeing that the saints had divided up the Wu and Yao tribes, Xuan Tian said, "In that case, we shall disperse." The saints, seeing that there was nothing left to divide, dispersed.
Xuan Tian was about to leave when a black mist suddenly drifted over, transforming into a person who immediately bowed down to Xuan Tian, crying, "Holy Father, save me!!" This person was a vengeful ghost formed from the soul of a human. This soul had not yet completely lost its intelligence, and now that it had seen Xuan Tian, it did not want to remain a lonely ghost. Since most of these vengeful ghosts could not enter the cycle of reincarnation, it came to beg Xuan Tian to save it.
Xuan Tian asked, "Are you a member of the human race? How many others are like you?"
“Holy Father, I am the only one whose spirit has not been extinguished like mine. There are tens of millions of others whose minds have been clouded by resentment. I beg you, Holy Father, to use your great power to save us.” The man cried and bowed.
"Don't worry, I will definitely save you." Xuan Tian sighed inwardly. Although the witches and demons had slaughtered the human race and caused great harm, fortunately, there were still so many souls left who could be reincarnated.
That being said, Xuan Tian had no good solution. Tens of millions of souls—even the current underworld couldn't accommodate so many ghosts in a short time. Moreover, these souls harbored immense resentment and deep karma, making them unable to reincarnate. If left unchecked, they would surely bring calamity to the primordial world. Just as Xuan Tian was troubled, he suddenly remembered that in the underworld of later generations, there was the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha chanting sutras and reciting Buddhist prayers to cleanse the karmic burdens of those wronged souls and awaken their intelligence. Immediately, Xuan Tian understood what to do, as if the clouds had parted from his mind.
In his previous life, Xuan Tian was a netizen who spent a lot of time in internet cafes, reading countless novels and some Taoist and Buddhist scriptures. In this life, when Hong Jun preached, he recorded all the teachings, including the eight hundred unorthodox schools. Jieyin and Zhunti derived twenty-four thousand volumes of Buddhist scriptures from these eight hundred unorthodox schools to establish Buddhism. Now, Xuan Tian also had the eight hundred unorthodox schools at his disposal and had read some later Buddhist classics. Soon, he obtained the Buddhist scriptures he wanted.
Xuan Tian immediately took out a meditation cushion and sat down on it. He formed the Ambrosia Mudra with his right hand and placed his left hand near his dantian as if picking a flower. He chanted Sanskrit mantras and recited the Rebirth Mantra that he had comprehended on his own. Of course, it was somewhat different from the Rebirth Mantra of later Buddhism, but the effect was similar.
As Xuan Tian's voice grew louder, countless souls surged towards the Heavenly Court, all bowing before him, their bodies bathed in the golden light generated by his incantations, their faces serene. Xuan Tian thought, "Saving one is the same as saving a hundred, so I might as well save them all, so that the primordial world may be cleansed." His voice grew louder and louder, gradually spreading throughout the entire primordial world.
The number of dead and wounded in the Lich War was no less than one billion. Even the Heavenly Court's demon soldiers alone lost several billion lives in this war. Not to mention the deaths caused by the collapse of Mount Buzhou and the leakage of the Heavenly River. The combined number was no less than ten billion. Even the body of the Xuan Tian Saint could not withstand the strain. For three whole days and three nights, Xuan Tian finally sent all the souls produced in this great war to the Underworld. Fortunately, they did not all flood in at once, otherwise the Underworld would not have been able to accommodate so many souls.
Xuan Tian was also pale-faced, his magical power completely depleted. Even a saint with an inexhaustible supply of magical power would find it difficult to withstand such a massive drain. As he stopped speaking, an indescribable golden cloud of merit suddenly descended upon Xuan Tian, instantly replenishing his depleted magical power. A massive golden wheel appeared behind his head, its golden light illuminating the entire Three Realms and the primordial world.
Xuan Tian seemed to understand something and stood up. Suddenly, Dao Ancestor Hongjun appeared. Xuan Tian quickly bowed, but Hongjun said, "Now that you have accumulated great merit, the only one in the world worthy of my bow is the Heavenly Dao. I cannot accept it." Upon hearing this, Xuan Tian stopped bowing and said, "Once a teacher, always a teacher." Hongjun nodded with satisfaction.
Several more people appeared, including the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa.
When everyone saw the golden wheel of merit that looked almost tangible behind Xuan Tian's head, they were all astonished and looked at Xuan Tian in a completely different way.
Laozi seemed to have a deeper understanding and congratulated Xuantian. Yuanshi was very jealous, as Xuantian's merits came too easily, but he still had to congratulate him. Tongtian and Nuwa also offered their congratulations. Jieyin and Zhunti, however, were deep in thought. The incantation Xuantian recited was very similar to their Western Great Law, and even more refined. If anyone could understand what Xuantian was reciting, besides Hongjun, it would only be Jieyin and Zhunti. The two approached Xuantian and bowed solemnly, saying, "The Great Law of Sage Xuantian is indeed extraordinary. If you have time, please come with us to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss."
Xuan Tian knew their intentions in receiving the incantation; it was plagiarized from theirs, but they simply didn't know how to use it. So he agreed.
Thirty-six Hongjun mended heaven and earth, and Xuantian discussed Buddhist teachings.
Hongjun looked at the heavens and earth again, took out the Creation Jade Disc and threw it into the sky. Ten thousand rays of purple light flew to all directions of the universe. In a short while, they repaired the spiritual veins that had been destroyed by the shattering of the primordial world during the Lich War. Except for a few that could not be restored, such as Buzhou Mountain, where the largest spiritual vein in the primordial world was gathered, which was destroyed by the Lich War, all of them were restored except for those that could not be restored. Everyone said to Dao Ancestor Hongjun, "Teacher is merciful."
Hongjun continued, “The Wu and Yao races disregarded the billions of living beings in the primordial world, waging several wars that ultimately triggered the primordial calamity, causing boundless evil consequences—an unforgivable sin. Now that the war has ended, the fate of the two races has run its course, and they are no longer virtuous or capable of ruling the world. From now on, the human race will be the protagonist in the primordial world. Furthermore, I have merged with the Dao and will henceforth only follow the Heavenly Dao, not concern myself with worldly affairs. However, there are two matters that you need to discuss: First, although the primordial world is largely intact, countless fragments are scattered throughout the starry sky, where countless living beings still survive. How should we restrain these beings to obey the Heavenly Dao? Second, the Heavenly Court is currently unruly, and the stars in the heavens are unsuppressed. The Heavenly Court can suppress the primordial world's fortune and take over the duties of the Heavenly Dao, but the Yao race has lost its virtue and can no longer govern the Heavenly Court; it needs to be re-established. You can discuss these three issues and then tell me.” After speaking, he disappeared.
