He believed that the path of Tao is fundamental, which is commonly referred to as Taoist practice, while methods are auxiliary, divided into methods and techniques. Methods refer to the techniques of cultivating qi and energy, which are the path to immortality and attaining Tao. Techniques refer to the practical manifestations of all Taoist methods, whether offensive or defensive, and are countless. Both are indispensable; otherwise, one would be like those taught by Yuanshi Tianzun. The Jie Sect emphasized techniques while neglecting Taoist practice, resulting in many members of the Jie Sect who lacked virtue, were ignorant of destiny, and committed unjust acts. The Chan Sect emphasized Taoist practice while downplaying techniques, leading to the fact that even though the Twelve Golden Immortals had higher Taoist practice than the members of the Jie Sect, they were often defeated and forced to flee, ultimately relying on the intervention of the older generation.
Although no powerful spells were taught this time, it was far more important than those. Why would other saints share their insights on sainthood with people who are not their disciples? Perhaps some people on Penglai Island did not take the teachings to heart, but that can only be blamed on their lack of opportunity.
After the sermon, Xuan Tian returned to the Du Tian Palace and summoned Wan'er and Jian'er. Ever since Xuan Tian had given them the first part of the Tian Xuan Yuan Gong, he had never personally taught them.
Having experienced great changes, the two matured early, especially Wan'er. They were accepted as disciples by Xuan Tian and knew that the opportunity was rare, so they seized it and cultivated diligently. Now, both of them have reached the cultivation level of Taiyi True Immortal. The fact that they were able to cultivate to the level of Heavenly Immortal within a thousand years at such a young age without any guidance is enough to show that they have extraordinary talent.
The two entered the hall and saw Xuantian sitting on a cloud bed. They immediately knelt down and bowed.
Xuan Tian waved his hand to help them up, glanced at them, and felt quite gratified. He said, "Wan'er, Jian'er, I took you two as my disciples, but due to other matters, I was unable to teach you. Fortunately, you two are very well-behaved, and you have actually achieved the cultivation of Taiyi Golden Immortal by your own exploration. That's not bad."
Hearing Xuan Tian's praise, the two were delighted, but they also knew that their cultivation was not very good, so they said in unison, "Teacher, you flatter us."
Seeing that they were proud but not arrogant, Xuan Tian was also pleased, thinking to himself that his disciples' temperament was quite good. He said, "The events of the past happened suddenly. Today, I formally accept you two as my disciples, and I will also tell you about the rules of my sect." Seeing that the two were overjoyed, Xuan Tian waved his hand to interrupt them, and said, "Wan'er, today I accept you as my eldest disciple and bestow upon you the Daoist name Huixin." "Jian'er, you are now my second disciple. I bestow upon you the Daoist name Zhen." "Thank you, Master."
After the two finished their greetings, Xuan Tian took out several more items and handed a fan, a sword, a bracelet, and a flag to Hui Xin, saying, "This is the Banana Leaf Fan (Water), a primordial spiritual treasure with thirty-two layers of restrictions. It can draw water from the four seas and perform the art of rainmaking, making it a treasure that benefits the world. With it, one can gain some merit. This sword is the primordial spiritual treasure, the Purple Cloud Sword, with thirty-three layers of restrictions. It can generate Purple Cloud Divine Thunder on its own, and its power is no less than that of a spiritual treasure with thirty-six layers of restrictions. This bracelet is what I obtained on the Treasure Distribution Cliff. It is called the Jade Bracelet, with thirty layers of restrictions. It can be used for long-range attacks and can trap people inside. As long as your magic power is sufficient, even a Great Luo Golden Immortal cannot escape it. This flag is the Mysterious Yin Sunflower Water Flag among the Five Banners of Heaven and Earth, with thirty-nine layers of restrictions. It can be used for both offense and defense, and it is truly a fine treasure."
He then took out another screen, a set of eight swords, a robe, and a pearl, handing them to Zhen, saying, "This is the Emerald Isle Peak, a postnatal spiritual treasure with twenty-eight restrictions, weighing over 800,000 jin. It can change size at will, and contains a spiritual vein that can generate spiritual energy on its own. This is the innate spiritual treasure, the Kunwu Eight Swords. There are eight swords: the first is Hiding the Sun, the second is Cutting Water, the third is Turning the Soul, the fourth is Suspended Scimitar, the fifth is Startling the Salamander, the sixth is Destroying the Soul, the seventh is Exorcising Evil, and the eighth is True Steel. When combined, they can set up the Eight Ultimate Innate Array, drawing upon the power of the Eight Ultimate Primordial Arrays. I will now impart to you the Way of Sword Qi. This Sword Qi is forged from a precious sword as its embryo, using one's own Qi to refine it. The better the sword embryo, the stronger the Sword Qi that is forged. Every human body possesses a Qi, also called the Innate Qi, or Primordial Qi." Ancestral Qi refers to the primordial Qi that gives birth to Heaven, Earth, humanity, and all things. The so-called Dao is originally empty, yet it is Qi with form; Qi is originally real, yet it is formless. Existence and non-existence restrain each other, and thus life arises. Therefore, the Book of Changes says: "Heaven and Earth mingled, and all things were transformed; two emotions intertwined, and all things were formed." The sage explores this profound mystery and knows its source, reversing and melting, defying creation, stealing the mother Qi of Heaven and Earth to make the elixir, stealing the essence of Yin and Yang to make fire, refining the form to return to the one Qi, refining the Qi to return to nothingness, thus achieving union with the Dao. This Daoist robe is the Seven Star White Moon Robe, a primordial spiritual treasure, with thirty-five layers of restrictions, capable of gathering the power of the Big Dipper for defense. This bead is called the Extreme Vision Bead, a thirty-one-layered acquired spiritual treasure, capable of long-range attacks; when launched, it shines brilliantly, blinding the opponent.
After distributing the treasures, he said, "I will pass on to you two another escape technique. This technique was created by me and is unparalleled in the primordial world. It is called 'The Passage of Time.' In the blink of an eye, one can travel 280,000 miles, which is faster than the Ancestral Witch Emperor Jiang. Moreover, it ignores formations and restrictions. This is an absolute secret of my Penglai Island that is not passed on. It must never be passed on to anyone without my permission."
Huixin and Liaozhen bowed and said, "Thank you, Master."
"My sect has only three rules: First, fellow disciples must help each other and not kill one another; second, disciples must not abuse their power to bully others or harm living beings; and third, disciples must not betray their master or ancestors. The rest is up to you," Xuan Tian added.
"We will follow Master's teachings," the two bowed.
"You may leave now. Study diligently and do not slack off." Xuan Tian waved his hand, dismissing them.
The Twenty-Seventh Heaven of Mysterious Extremes, Accepts Chang'e as a Disciple
Last time, we talked about how Xuan Tian formally accepted Wan'er and Jian'er as his disciples and distributed treasures to them.
After Xuan Tian divided the treasures, he sat in meditation in the Dutian Palace. Soon after, Xuan Tian opened his eyes and laughed, "Perhaps I should learn from them." After saying that, he disappeared.
However, when Xuan Tian was meditating, his divine sense detected that Laozi and the others had opened up a field in the chaos. He thought that he should also open up a field, so he came to the chaos.
