During Emperor Yao's reign, a major event occurred: remnants of the demon race stirred up floods in an attempt to revive their former glory. The floodwaters were raging, and countless humans perished.
At the age of eighty-two, Zhen Shou Yang Miaojun failed in her flood control efforts.
Now, Liao Zhen, having received Xuan Tian's decree, stayed among the human race for ten years in search of an opportunity, but had no idea what that opportunity was. Fortunately, he always believed that Xuan Tian wouldn't make baseless accusations, so he stayed quietly among the human race.
One day, Liao Zhen was really annoyed, so he went on a journey through the wilderness. When he came to a mountaintop, he saw a child lying on the ground. Liao Zhen quickly helped him up and found that the child had just fainted from hunger. Liao Zhen found some fruit and fed him, and the child woke up. Liao Zhen saw that the child was exceptionally handsome and had good aptitude, suitable for cultivation. He had the idea of taking him as a disciple. However, he noticed that the child was different from ordinary people. Ordinary people only have two eyes, but this child had an extra eye, which surprised Liao Zhen. Then he did some calculations with his fingers and burst out laughing.
Liao Zhen asked, "Would you like to become my disciple and follow me in cultivation?" The child asked, "Who are you? Why should I become your disciple?" Liao Zhen was stumped by the question. Liao Zhen was very famous among humans. People recognized him wherever he went. Even a three-year-old child knew him as Immortal Master Liao Zhen. Now that he was used to it, he naturally assumed that the child knew him, which led to his earlier question.
Liao Zhen smiled and said, "I am Liao Zhen, the second disciple of Pangu Xuantian Saint of Penglai Island. Seeing that you have good potential, I wish to take you as my disciple and teach you the methods of cultivating immortality." The child thought for a moment and then asked, "If I become your disciple, can you save my mother?" Liao Zhen smiled and said, "I cannot save your mother, but if you learn the immortal arts from me, you will be able to save her yourself." The child, upon hearing the first part of the sentence, thought he couldn't save his mother and was heartbroken. However, upon hearing the last two sentences, he was overjoyed and quickly knelt down, saying, "Master, please accept my bow." He then bowed deeply.
Liao Zhen smiled as the child bowed. After the child finished bowing, Liao Zhen asked, "Do you have a name? I take my father's surname, Yang, and my name is Yang Miaojun," the child replied.
Liao Zhen said, "Come back to Penglai with me to cultivate. When your cultivation is sufficient, come and save your mother." This child was none other than Yang Miaojun. Her mother was the Jade Emperor's sister. She fell in love with a mortal, and the two had a son and a daughter. Later, the Jade Emperor found out about this. In order to maintain the dignity of the Heavenly Court, the Jade Emperor sent down heavenly soldiers to kill her father and suppress her mother under Peach Mountain. Yang Miaojun was young, but she was sensible. In order to save her mother, she searched all over the mountains and rivers, hoping to find a way to save her mother. Today, however, she fainted from hunger on this desolate mountain.
The opportunity that Xuan Tian mentioned earlier was indeed this. Xuan Tian had foreseen that Zhen and Yang Miaojun had a master-disciple relationship, which is why Zhen laughed heartily after meeting Yang Miaojun.
Meanwhile, after Zhen took Yang Miaojun in, he brought her back to Penglai to teach her.
Meanwhile, the remnants of the demon race caused floods, attempting to revive their power. Emperor Yao, being wise and virtuous, summoned his ministers to seek wise counsel. In the end, he elected a man named Gun.
Yao then ordered Gun to manage the floods. Gun was a man of great wisdom. Seeing the immense power of the water, he devised a method of building dams to block the flood. However, the prehistoric world was vast, and the waters were overwhelming. At first, things were alright, but later many demons joined in, stirring up the Yellow River and flooding the prehistoric human lands. The floodwaters were even greater, and how could the people alone stop it? Later, Yunxiao stepped forward and obtained the Breath Soil from Nuwa. It was leftover soil from the creation of humans. This soil had great power and could grow on its own. Just a small amount was enough to stop the flood.
With the help of the treasure, Gun initially saw considerable success in blocking the boundless river. However, this action seemed to anger the Yellow River. The Yellow River roared, churning up towering waves that grew ever larger. For every foot the Breath of Earth expanded, the waves rose ten feet higher. But the Breath of Earth was no longer the relic used by the goddess Nuwa to create humans; its expansion had its limits. The Yellow River eventually breached many of the dikes built with the Breath of Earth. Gun, a man of insight, immediately realized the danger. He suspected that something strange was causing the trouble in the Yellow River, something he couldn't control. He hurriedly reported to Emperor Yao, requesting an investigation and subjugation. Halfway there, a torrential downpour began. Just as Gun was worrying, another report arrived: water from the East Sea was overflowing into the river, and the dikes had completely collapsed!
Emperor Yao was furious upon hearing the report and immediately wanted to punish Gun, but Yunxiao stopped him, saying, "This matter is caused by a strange creature, not Gun's fault. Let me go and subdue it, then send Gun to control the floods again, so he can atone for his crimes." Emperor Yao then relented and allowed Yunxiao to lead a group to subdue the demon. Yunxiao was also a powerful immortal with great supernatural abilities. Although there were many demons causing trouble, few were truly powerful; most were minor demons who had not yet achieved human form and lacked organization, merely causing chaos without any real power. How could they possibly stop the enraged Yunxiao? At first, Yunxiao was somewhat cautious, only punishing the troublemaking demons. However, the Hunyuan Golden Cauldron in his hand was too powerful, and when he got carried away with killing, many others were implicated. But the flood affected too wide an area; how could he kill them all at once? Yunxiao's personal abilities were ultimately limited, so he reported to Emperor Yao, who then gathered troops and used a layered advance strategy, controlling the floods wherever they went.
Over the course of five or six years, the flood control efforts began to show results, but the Yunxiao strategy gradually revealed its drawbacks. As the project progressed, abandoned dikes became visible everywhere in human settlements, and the water level at the forefront of the flood control efforts rose higher and higher. However, with the help of the Xirang (a type of magical soil), this was not a cause for concern. But the increasing number of demons killed finally angered the leading figures among the demons. The demon sages gathered together to discuss countermeasures.
However, the great demon Qingjiao appeared, leading a group of demons and calling himself the Great Sage of the Azure Dragon. He led his troops to attack Yunxiao. At first, Yunxiao hesitated to fight back because of their shared demon race. But later, even if Yunxiao wanted to fight back, he couldn't. There were too many demons to kill them all, and he was alone and no match for them. So he asked other disciples of the Jie Sect for help. In the end, after a great battle, they killed the group of rebellious demons and the matter was over.
However, the task of controlling the flood encountered difficulties again. The dikes that Gun had built before had now become an obstacle to the flood control. The dikes, which were millions of miles wide and formed from the soil, could not be removed by human power. Even the disciples of the Jie Sect could not do anything about them. In the end, Gun worked hard for more than ten years but failed to control the flood. Instead, he was punished and executed by Emperor Yao.
