According to regulations, all villagers must move out of Qiaodong Village before the third of next month. Now all the fruits and vegetables in the village’s orchards and vegetable gardens have been pulled out. Fortunately, the temporary housing has been renovated and we can move in as long as we move our furniture and luggage in.
The eldest uncle found a large truck and transported the beds that Chen Jin and the third uncle's family wanted to move, as well as some small furniture and clothes, over in one trip. The car we called also provided moving services, saving them the trouble of carrying the items upstairs. But you have to pay for the car and transportation fees.
Seeing that every family in Qiaodong Village was moving, people started taking orders in the village.
Chen Jin only went to see the house on the first day of moving, and the one-bedroom and one-living-room temporary housing was spacious for her. It was fairly clean inside, probably because someone had cleaned it. She only brought in a bed, a set of tables and chairs, kitchen utensils, clothes, and the remaining goods from the convenience store. Except for the dining area in the living room, the rest of the space was left as the convenience store. Chen Jin continued to hire Tian Miao to work and left her a copy of the key to the temporary housing door.
With only eight days left in the month, Chen Jin could no longer sit still and called her uncle to ask if there was any news about houses near Nanjing University. If not, she planned to buy a house in the city center of Xicheng District first.
My uncle slapped his head and said that he had been so busy these days that he forgot to say it.
"Let's go tomorrow at 11 o'clock. You should leave early and take a bus to the west gate of Nanjing University. That place was previously allocated to Nanjing University professors. The bungalows all have stairs. Those who are interested in selling are 50 or 60 square meters. The environment is okay, but there are too many people. There are also two small houses for sale. Small houses are not bad. If you want to buy one, I suggest you buy a small house. You will know when you see it tomorrow. I won't say more. I have to call your second uncle and ask him if he wants to go and see it too."
Chen Jin wanted to go out and buy a house, and his third uncle and aunt were a little confused.
"You have nine resettlement houses. If you think they are not spacious enough for you, you can just pick two connected ones and connect them. You still have to buy houses outside. Those houses are so expensive."
"Uncle, aunt, there's not much interest if you keep the money in the bank. My eldest uncle said that the housing prices in the city are rising every year. I think it's better to use the money to buy a house. The annual increase in housing prices is higher than the bank interest. Besides, if you are short of money, you can just sell the house. I plan to use half of the money to buy real estate. Even if I don't work in the future, I can live well by renting the house."
"Think about it, compared to the 100 yuan of 20 years ago or 10 years ago, isn't it becoming less and less valuable? But houses nowadays are definitely much more expensive than houses 10 or 20 years ago."
Chen Jin added another bombshell, "You keep the money and give it to your cousins later, and you have to worry about them spending it recklessly. Why not just buy them houses? Let them each have a few houses and use the rent every month to spend."
At this point, my third uncle and aunt's attitude softened.
Once they have money, what they fear most is that their descendants are not only incompetent but also able to spend money. So it is indeed a good idea to use the money to buy a house.
"Then, shall we go and take a look too?"
"Go!" Chen Jin helped them make the decision. "Third aunt, you don't know that the elementary and middle schools near our school are all ranked among the best in the city. Think about it, my cousin is old enough to get married, right? If the children can go to a good school in the future, then of course they should go to a good school..."
The village decided to move the ancestral graves on August 3rd. There was a piece of land in the village that was not included in the demolition area, and all the graves in the village were moved there. Chen Jin's three uncles have discussed it and decided to move the graves of her grandparents, her great-grandparents, and her mother to the peach forest.
My third uncle also said that he would come back to look after his peach orchard when he has time.
On the morning of July 24, Chen Jin and his third uncle's family of four went out together. She called Tian Miao, but Tian Miao said she had to go and tidy up the store in the temporary housing. Seeing that Aunt Zhou and her family were also there, the third aunt asked Aunt Zhou to help look after Tian Miao and let Tian Miao stay in the resettlement house at night.
"This kid," sighed the third aunt, "her father came to me yesterday to borrow money to buy a house for his son, but I scolded him back. It must have been her stepmother who instigated this. She only thinks about taking advantage of him all day long!"
Chen Jin: "Miao Miao's mother has been gone for many years, and her father and stepmother are not good to her. How dare they come to you to borrow money? Anyway, Miao Miao is an adult and doesn't need to be controlled by them. Next time they come, call me and I will scold them to death."
Third aunt glared at her and said, "Why do you need me? Don't worry, they can't borrow a penny from me."
They are all annoying relatives. They stayed away from us before the demolition. Now that they know their village has money for demolition, they all come again. Chen Jin thought, isn’t her biological father’s family of the same character? !
Chen Jin and his third uncle's family took the bus to the east gate of Nanjing University, and then walked through the school to the west gate.
It was the first time for her third uncle and his family to come to NDU. When she first entered university, it was her eldest uncle who sent her and her mother to report.
"Look at the university your third and fourth sisters are attending. Do something to honor me!" the third aunt taught her cousin.
Chen Yongan secretly stuck out his tongue at Chen Jin and shrugged helplessly: My mother is so bold, is Nanjing University a piece of cabbage? Even if he studies for a few more years, he still won't be able to pass the exam.
As we reached the west gate, my uncle was having a very pleasant conversation with an old man wearing a gray Tai Chi suit. I don't know what they were talking about, but the old man burst into laughter.
"Here you are." The uncle called her over and introduced her, "Professor Shen, this is my niece Chen Jin who is studying in the Chinese Department of Nanjing University. This is Professor Shen Yibai who teaches French in the Foreign Languages Department of your school."
"It just so happens that Professor Shen's family has two small Western-style buildings to sell, and we are lucky enough to catch up. This house has cultural heritage."
"It's not as exaggerated as you say." Professor Shen waved his hand, but his uncle's words made the smile on his face deepen. Looking at Chen Jin, I felt that the little girl looked quite gentle and indeed had the temperament of a Chinese major student. After Chen Jin asked hello, Professor Shen asked, "Jiang Chaosheng is your teacher, right?"
“Yes, Professor Shen, do you also know Professor Jiang?”
"Haha, I know you. We studied abroad together." Professor Shen led them to the small villa while asking Chen Jin about her school life. When he heard her say that she planned to stay on as a counselor after graduation and asked about her grades in school, she said that there would be no problem.
"We're here." Professor Shen pointed to the two small Western-style buildings in front. "The small Western-style buildings around here have a history of more than 70 years. My grandfather used to teach at Nanjing University, and the family bought three small Western-style buildings. One of them was further inside, and we took it back in 1980. Now my wife and I live in the inner one. These two buildings were rented out a few years ago. We were reluctant to sell them. Now... well, I won't say anymore."
Chen Jin listened quietly. She was curious about what Professor Shen was not willing to say, but she did not ask any further questions.
The houses were not taken back until 1980, and there was no thought of selling them for thirteen years in between, which shows that Professor Shen was reluctant to do so. But now he may be thinking of selling the two houses because he needs cash flow.
It only took them ten minutes to walk from the west gate of the school. This area is the residential area for the families of Nanjing University faculty and staff. Most of the people living in these three rows of small houses are old professors of the school. There are additional faculty and staff buildings not far away, and there are also several buildings there. On the way here, the entire road was lined with shops. A little further ahead from the family area were the Nanjing University Kindergarten, Nanjing University Primary School and Nanjing University Middle School.
Because of the presence of the Nanjing University Primary School and the Nanjing University Middle School, the houses here are in great demand. Even if they are not faculty members here, many wealthy people want to buy houses here so that their children can go to good schools in the future.
My uncle must have invested a lot of money to be able to find these two small Western-style buildings.
"The layouts of the two buildings are the same. Let's take a look at this one first. This one is better." Professor Shen took the key and opened the door of the small villa on the right.
"It has small courtyards in the front and back, two floors, and four rooms." After a brief introduction, Professor Shen let them look around.
The house was empty, with no furniture or anything. There were graffiti on some of the walls, probably left by the previous tenants. The living room is right at the entrance on the first floor. It is very spacious, and there is a guest bedroom, kitchen and dining room inside. Upstairs is a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and a study. There is a guest bathroom on the second floor. The master bedroom also has a separate toilet and there is a small living room on the second floor.
Except for the master bedroom, the other four rooms are not large in size. The house covers an area of up to 90 square meters. But this does not include the front and back courtyards. The house is on a higher floor and has no furniture, which makes it appear spacious.
Whether upstairs or downstairs, the house is bright and has good lighting.
The walls of the front and back yards could not block anything, and the neighbors next door could see what was going on. However, Professor Shen said that most of the people living here are old professors who are retired or about to retire, and there will not be any major conflicts between neighbors.
While Professor Shen was waiting downstairs, the uncle followed Chen Jin up to the second floor and whispered, "Professor Shen asked for one million. If we buy two, it will be 950,000 per building."
Chen Jin has been studying the city's housing prices at home these days. There are some that cost several hundred per square meter as well as some that cost five or six thousand per square meter, but they are rare. Most of the house prices in downtown Rong City are between one thousand and two thousand, and this small Western-style building with a price tag of one million is about four thousand six hundred per square meter.
It’s very expensive.
Chen Jin remembered that there were fewer people today. "Didn't my second aunt say she wanted to buy a house near Nanda for Jiajia? They didn't come?"
Uncle: "They have discussed it and decided to buy an apartment with an elevator in Xicheng District."
Chen Jin nodded. She guessed that her second uncle and his family didn’t have that much money to spend, so they thought it would be more cost-effective to buy a house in Xicheng District. My second uncle only had a piece of residential land and two dilapidated earthen brick houses. His household registration was not in the village, so he only got more than 200,000 yuan and an 80-square-meter resettlement house. The resettlement housing has to pay a difference of 20 square meters. If they want to buy two houses, they may have to sell the company housing they are currently living in. Or take out a loan to buy a house.
Sure enough, my uncle said that they had already taken out loans for two houses, giving half of the down payment, and the monthly repayment for both houses would be one thousand.
Chen Jin immediately became interested, "Uncle, where are these houses? I want to buy a few too."
The uncle looked at her with approval, thinking that she was worthy of being his niece "taught personally by him" and that her vision in investment was exactly the same as his. "It's near the wholesale market in Xicheng District. I'm optimistic about that place. In the future, the commercial center of Xicheng District will definitely expand there. After finishing our business here, we'll go there this afternoon. I know the developer of that property. If we buy more, we'll get a discount."
After saying that, he looked at his cousin next to him and said, "Wenkang, you guys should go over and take a look too. It's definitely a good idea to buy a house if you have money in hand."
Third uncle and third aunt were very convinced by eldest uncle, "OK."
After going down to the second floor, Professor Shen did not rush to ask them questions, and took them to see the small western-style building next door. The one on the right is indeed better. There are still some debris in this house that have not been cleaned up.
Uncle: "Third sister, what do you think?"
Chen Jin wanted to buy this house when he saw it outside.
It has a beautiful appearance, a good location, good educational resources, and high-quality neighbors.
Well, she lives alone in a building that’s a bit too big.
